"Architecture Is The Thoughtful Making of Space.": Louis Kahn

Good design is driven by underlying ideas that organize and give meaning to experiences, not just physical interest. An idea is a mental structure that allows us to understand information. Without underlying ideas, architects are merely space planners who decorate space rather than create architecture, as architecture resides in the embedded sensibility and DNA of a building that infuses its whole being.

Good design solutions are not merely

physically interesting but are driven by

underlying ideas. An idea is a specific
mental structure by which we organize,
understand, and give meaning to
external experiences and information.
Without underlying ideas informing
their buildings, architects are merely
space planners. Space planning with
decoration applied to dress it up is
not architecture; architecture resides in
the DNA of a building, in an embedded
sensibility that infuses its whole.
