READING:

The goal is to have students reading at or above an early emergent
level by the end of the year. This is how we get there:

Learning letters and sounds

Reading pictures and small text

Breaking apart sounds and reading CVC words (consonant, vowel,
consonant), such ascat, dog, bug, map, etc.

These books contain A LOT of new vocabulary words and sight
words for your child

The goal is to have students writing AT LEAST one complete
sentence, if not more, to match their drawing. This is how we get
there:
Students will begin with drawing
pictures, scribbling letters and words, and initial sounds.

What can you do to help your
child in reading?
READ at home! Children begin learning to read when they are read to
Ask questions while reading and retell the story together
Talk about daily events throughout the day. This helps them to begin
exploring ideas, learn new vocabulary and understand the world
around them!
Practice letters and sounds/sight words all the time! Flashcards are a
good way to do this
WRITE at home! Start by drawing pictures and then add words when
your child is ready

Count up to 100 by 1s and 10s

Count on from any number other than 1 up to 100

Represent a group of objects with a written number up to 20

Count objects in a group regardless of arrangement or order

Show the correct number of objects when I am told a number up
to 20

Compare two numbers between 1 and 10 and say which number has greater
value

Compose/decompose numbers 11-19 into a ten and some ones, and show
my work with a drawing or an equation

Easily add and subtract numbers up to 5 or less

Find how many more to get to 10 using numbers 1-9: 1 + ___ = 10

What can you do to help your child in
Math?
Count daily! Count with your child to model counting
correctly
Use objects around the house to represent a number
Practice writing your numbers and then count objects
to match it
Read numbers wherever you see them
Talk about which number is more and which one is
less
Practice the skills we teach. It is ok to teach ahead of
us!
