Axminster AWSL Lathe
A small hobby lathe with 5 spindle speeds, 240mm diameter

turning capacity and 440mm between centres. Well suited to
the newcomer to turning who has a limited budget available
and only space enough for a small lathe. The headstock, bed
and tailstock are constructed of heavy cast iron whilst the 375W
induction motor has more than enough power for the type of
projects likely to be produced on a lathe of this size. The 5 spindle
speeds give a useful range of between 760-3,200rpm. Both the
headstock spindle and tailstock barrel are bored to take 2MT
accessories, with the spindle having the common 1 x 8 tpi thread.
An extension bed is available to provide up to 965mm between
centres, for a standard lamp or chair legs perhaps? The tailstock
also has a hollow barrel to enable long hole boring.
Supplied with Axminster drive and revolving tailstock
centres, 75mm diameter faceplate and 150mm tool rest.

AH-1218 & AH-1218VS Lathes
For those looking for slightly larger capacities and more motor
power than is normally found on small bench top lathes either of
these would be a great choice. Made almost entirely of cast iron, the
bed of these lathes has a finely ground top surface which ensures
stability and minimal vibration during use. The thick walled cast
iron headstock and tailstock provide rigidity, and will give years of
trouble-free turning pleasure. The hollow tailstock (9mm bore) allows
long-hole boring to take place using a standard long-hole boring
auger, and features automatic ejection of centres. Quick release
levers allow for easy and accurate positioning of the tool rest and
tailstock. The lathes are powered by a 500W motor, which is smooth
and quiet during operation. The AH-1218 has a choice of 5 belt ratios
and the AH-1218VS features electronic variable speed utilising two

speed ranges for maximum torque at lower speeds. The spindle nose
has the very common 1 x 8tpi thread and a 2MT internal taper, so a
large range of accessories are available for these lathes. An indexing
pin is located on the headstock providing indexing at 15 intervals.
This should not be used as a spindle lock.
Solid rubber feet help to eliminate movement whilst in operation.
The tailstock barrel has 50mm of movement and includes a 2MT
live centre. An additional bed extension is available, giving an extra
capacity of 670mm between centres. These are great lathes for
those looking for that bit of extra power and capacity, but retaining
portability.

A heavy duty cast iron lathe bed ensures stability and minimises
vibration. The cast iron headstock and tailstock provide rigidity,
strength and will give years of trouble-free operation. The
tailstock is hollow with a 9mm bore for long hole boring. Quick
release levers allow for easy and accurate positioning of both
the tool rest and the tailstock. The 500W motor is suitable
for continuous operation with available spindle speeds of
400,700,1000,1500, 2200 and 3300rpm for turning a wide variety
of diameters. A convenient adjustment handle tilts the motor
for fast speed changes. Four solid rubber feet help eliminate

The Jet JWL1221VS is different to every other lathe in the

Jet range. The whole lathe has been designed to make the
woodturning experience better by focusing on control. As with
all other JET lathes, this one is made from cast iron, but the bed
width is much wider than is usually found on machines of this
size. This gives great support to the tool rest holder, which also
stays exactly where you clamp it even under the heaviest loads.
The spindle is supported by heavy duty bearings and is quietly
driven by a 745W DC motor via a 6 groove belt system. All of
the motor controls are very conveniently located together;
the speed control, spindle speed digital readout and forward/
reverse selector all come naturally to hand. The tall, rigid tailstock
has an ACME barrel lead screw with 64mm of travel, the barrel
and headstock spindles have 2MT tapers. Camlocks on both

tray plus wide feet for stability, whilst the bed extension is an
exact match to the lathe bed, giving a completely integrated look

An excellent value-for-money floor standing lathe, perfect for getting the budding woodturner started in the craft
with a minimum of outlay. Now supplied with Axminster centres, the AWVSL900 is of cast iron construction with
a variomatic speed control giving 500 to 2,000rpm in a stepless graduation. The headstock can be swivelled and
locked in position to allow bowls to be turned in front of the lathe; the 45 and 90 positions are indexed for ease
of selection. The lathe comes complete with an outboard tool rest extension which is used to get the bowl rest

Woodturning Lathe
The Axminster drill powered lathe is a useful lightweight unit for spindle or faceplate turning using
mains powered drills with a 43mm diameter mounting collar. The lathe bed is made from heavy
section aluminium extrusion and the headstock, tailstock and toolrest are all aluminium die-castings.
The headstock can be rotated through 90 to allow for faceplate turning in front of the lathe or for
using other drill mounted accessories such as sanding discs and polishing mops. Maximum capacity
between centres is 605mm (23.13/16) and maximum swing over bed is 75mm (3). Included as
standard with the lathe are a four prong drive centre for mounting in the headstock, a rotating centre
for the tailstock, 5 faceplate for bowl turning or sanding (use 5 self adhesive discs), a screw chuck
for small items, a strong tool rest and a work table which fits into the tool rest holder when using the
lathe as a disc sander. So if you already own a power drill and have always fancied trying your hand at

The AT1416VS utilises the very reliable inverter technology
usually found on much larger machines. Electronic variable speed
is a desirable feature for woodturners, enabling fine tuning of
speed to suit larger diameters or out of balance workpieces. A
three step poly-vee pulley system allows three speed ranges
which ensure maximum torque at all speeds. A versatile magnetic
switch unit can be placed at a convenient position on the lathe
to suit the work in hand and incorporates on/off buttons, a
speed control knob and a forward and reverse switch. An LED
digital read-out of the lathe speed in RPM is a useful feature and
400mm(16) between centres and a 350mm(14) swing over the

bed capacity is unusual on a lathe this compact. Spindle indexing
is achieved in 15 segments by insertion of a magnetic dowel pin.
Threaded holes (3/8x16 UNC) are provided at each corner of the
lathe for bench mounting. Tool post diameter 1 (25.4mm).

The AT1628VS is an excellent addition to our Trade Series range

and we are expecting it to be a very popular choice among
discerning woodturners. We are so impressed with its quality
and performance that we have decided to equip our Skill Centre
with several of these lathes. Supplied as a bench top model with
the option to purchase a leg stand if required, the lathe and leg
stand are of heavy cast iron construction to minimise vibration.
It features electronic variable speed supplied via an inverter
with two speed ranges for maximum torque at low speeds. The
advantage of variable speed is that you can fine tune the speed
of the lathe to the work in hand. This is especially important when
turning large or out of balance workpieces and it is so convenient
for fast speed changes. Spindle indexing is provided at 10
intervals and a magnetic control console with start/stop, speed
control and forward/reverse can be conveniently positioned for
the work in hand. Everything about the lathe feels just right, with
cam-lock action of the tool rest banjo and tailstock, all controls
work smoothly and effortlessly. A swivelling headstock can be
very useful, especially if bench mounting the lathe but it will also
slide along to the tailstock end of the bed. This allows the turning
of larger diameter bowls and platters off the end of the bed and
increases the capacity considerably. A 460mm bed extension
kit is available as an optional extra and this can be bolted onto
either end of the lathe bed. If you have the lathe fitted to the
cast iron leg stand it can be attached in a lower position offering
an impressive 875mm swing over the bed. This is achieved
by moving the tool rest banjo down onto the bed extension
and fitting the tool rest extension post supplied with the bed
extension kit. If you are serious about your woodturning and
want a lathe that offers excellent performance, features and value,
this lathe would be a sound choice.

Built to a high standard and capable of taking a
400mm(16) diameter bowl and a bed long enough
to turn a 1,060mm(42) long spindle. All the major
castings are thick section cast iron which gives a very
solid feel to the lathe and should guarantee vibrationfree running. Power is provided by a 1,100W motor driving the
spindle through a choice of two pairs of pulleys and controlled by
a variable speed controller situated at the rear of the headstock.
The low speed range gives plenty of torque for the big turning jobs
whilst the high speed range gives the speed necessary for smaller
components and for finishing. The front panel of the headstock,

Heavy Duty Lathe
The Jet 3520B lathe is equipped with precision ground bedways and the headstock
and tailstock are 13mm thick cast iron with positive cam action locking devices. The
heavy duty cast iron headstock is designed to travel up and down the entire length
of the bed of the lathe, which allows the turning of very large diameter work at the
tailstock end of the lathe. The safety spindle lock makes it easy to remove faceplates
and chucks and built in indexing, offers 36 positions (10) on the spindle. The 2-step,
10 groove Poly-V belt transmits full power from the motor to the spindle at all speeds
while providing extra long belt life and ultra smooth running. A forward and reverse
switch is a useful feature, especially when sanding timbers with interlocking grain
and the ergonomic handles allow easy lifting of the motor for fast speed range changes. Two ratios
are available enabling high torque at low rpm and with electronic speed control via an inverter; you

The Jet 4224B lathe is manufactured using heavy gauge cast
iron, this helps to minimise vibration and at 395kg this lathe stays
rock solid even when turning very large diameter projects. The
heavy duty headstock is designed to travel up and down the
entire length of the lathe, which allows the turning of very large
diameter work at the tailstock end of the lathe. Both headstock
and tailstock have positive cam action locking and a safety
spindle lock makes it easy to remove faceplates and chucks. Builtin indexing offers 48, 36 and 14 hole positions on the spindle.
The 3 stage 10 groove Poly-V belt transmits full power from the
motor to the spindle at all speeds while providing extra long belt
life and ultra smooth running. A forward and reverse switch is a
useful feature, especially when sanding timbers with interlocking
grain. The pivoting motor mount allows easy lifting of the motor
for fast speed range changes. Three speed ranges are available
40-910, 80-2,000 and 140-3,500rpm the lower range enabling
high torque at very low rpm. With electronic speed control via
an inverter, you can fine tune the speed of the lathe by the turn
of a knob. Comparator centres for copy work are a very useful
feature as is the neat storage compartment in the tailstock. The
tailstock quill thread has been upgraded from the previous
model and it now features an acme style thread which adds extra
support when drilling with a tailstock chuck in place. A vacuum
chucking facility is a real bonus on this lathe and it operates
using a compressor (not supplied) to generate the vacuum via a
venturi connection. A 1,600mm bed extension with a leg stand
and a 500mm bed extension kit are available as optional extras
and the shorter unit can be used in two positions, the lower

high grade steel, the chucks and their associated
accessories have been developed over the
years, in many cases in conjunction with our
professional turning friends, to cover almost
every eventuality likely to be encountered by the
amateur or professional alike.
One of our guiding principles has always been to ensure that as many
different operations as possible can be carried out without removing
the chuck from the lathe. This approach, combined with the provision
of multiple gripping diameters on most of the jaws, gives minimum
outlay coupled with maximum flexibility of operation.
Apart from the junior chuck which utilises engineering end mill
collets to hold small work pieces, all the Axminster chucks use the
tried and tested scroll mechanism to control the jaw travel. This
system provides the dual benefits of a nominal half inch of radial
movement of each jaw in expansion and contraction and a security
of grip onto the work which is unrivalled by any of the collet style

With new Safety Jaws
First drawn at a desk in Devon three years ago, the Evolution chuck
has been machined and refined to make woodturning easier,
accurate and more enjoyable. Our aim was to produce a chuck that
was slim, keeping the weight of the work over the bearings. We
achieved maximum accuracy by threading the body of the chuck
for perfect concentricity. We also wanted a chuck that would suit
the jaws already owned by our customers. Our first prototypes were
tested by some of the most well known names in the woodturning
world.
Lathe Thread Information
Taking the best features of our Axminster chuck designs over the
past 20 years, we have in our view the most superb woodturning
chuck ever made - the Evolution. We have introduced round the clock
manufacturing at our production workshop in Axminster to keep
pace with global demand.
1. Register diameter.
This table lists all the stock thread types which can be used when
ordering any of the threaded items, such as chucks, chuck backplates,
faceplates and screw chucks, from the catalogue. If you are uncertain

The Evolution SK114 chuck features a super-slim stainless steel
body incorporating newly designed longer accessory mounting

These second generation

working with green wood.
Similar in operation to a pin
chuck, the spigot jaws are

able to grip a blank along a substantial amount of its length to
impart a good measure of stability to the workpiece. To overcome

gripping features. They feature an
external dovetail which opens into
a 50mm recess, a 40mm internal
diameter stepped shoulder for a firm
grip on the outside of a spigot, plus a
10mm diameter central hole. A screw chuck can be purchased
separately for use with these jaws. Recommended range: 3555mm internal, 50-70mm external.
Although designed to fit the 80mm chucks these jaws will

An 80mm diameter version of our

popular small dovetail jaws with a
15mm diameter external dovetail,
for gripping the bases of small bowls,
goblets and egg cups. Recommended
range: 0-20mm internal, 20-40mm external.
Although designed to fit the 80mm chucks they will also fit
the 100mm and 125mm versions.
So called because they use

eight conical white rubber
buttons to grip the work and
pull it securely back against
the aluminium jaw plates
without damaging the edge.
Although the rubber buttons
are easy on the wood they are
not really suitable for bowls with
a very fine edge, these are better
held in specially made wooden jaws
mounted on the Axminster wood jaw
plates. As well as the tapped holes there
is a slot provided in each of the 250mm jaws (not
the 400mm ones) which allows the position of the
jaws to be finely adjusted to accommodate slightly
irregular pieces. Two sizes of plate are available,
one for bowls up to 225mm diameter, the other
for up to 400mm. As an alternative to using the buttons, stacking
turn studs are available as an optional extra. These are designed
as a primary holding device for all manner of round or square
blanks and giving a very secure holding method, they can be
used singularly or doubled up using the longer bolts supplied.
Both sets of jaws are supplied complete with buttons, with spare
buttons available individually. For better access a longer chuck
key may be required when using button jaws
N.B. The 400mm jaws are not suitable for use with the
Axminster AWVSL900 and AWVSL1000 lathes.

Axminster Stacking Turn Studs are a great additional accessory

for anyone who already owns either the 250 or 400mm Axminster
button jaws. Offered as an alternative to the buttons as a primary
gripping device, they give a really positive grip onto square or
round section stock. If you rough turn your bowls, then these
would also offer an excellent choice for remounting them on the
lathe for truing up the spigot prior to re-chucking. The set of eight
studs are supplied with two lengths of hex socket screws suitable
for using the studs singularly or doubled up for a deeper grip. A

The Axminster Junior chuck is the first true collet chuck to be

produced with woodturners specifically in mind. In this chuck we
use our successful ER20 engineering collets which are precision
machined to grip evenly along their whole length without
marking the work. The chuck is supplied with three collets: 7
to 6mm, 11 to 10mm and 13 to 12mm and there is a range of
additional ones available which together give a gripping range
from 2mm to 13mm diameter. The collet is tightened by means of
a nut which has both a knurled section and spanner flats to give
two tightening options and also features an ejection ring for easy
release. The Junior chuck has been designed with the miniaturist
in mind and its ability to handle long lengths of dowel (in
conjunction with a hollow headstock) make it particularly useful
for repeat production of small items.

Axminster Indexing Arm

A universal, indexing arm for use with Axminster chucks, either
the Super Precision with its indexing holes around the backplate
or the Clubman K10 or SK100 chucks with the addition of the
indexing ring. The base is secured to any convenient fixed object,

A replaceable stainless steel parallel screw mounted onto a boss

which fits into either the 62mm recess of the A dovetails or the

When large platters are to

be turned it is often difficult
to get a standard chuck key down
the side of a workpiece to tighten
or loosen the chuck. To overcome this we have produced a long
key to fit the Evolution SK114 as part of an accessory kit. The kit
includes the 260mm long 9mm square drive chuck key which has
a knurled knob at the top so that the handle can slide to one side
for extra torque should the workpiece require it. A 400ml aerosol of
P.T.F.E dry lubricant is included to maintain your chuck in optimum
condition plus a 3 and 4mm T bar hex wrench for swapping jaws or
locking a chuck onto a lathe spindle for turning in reverse.
When larger diameter work is to be turned, a longer chuck key

overcomes the problem of the limited access encountered when
using the standard key. Two long keys are available for the Super
Precision chuck,(600120) to fit the Super Precision chuck with
9mm square drive and (600121) fits the super precision chuck
with 8mm square drive. We would suggest measuring your
standard chuck key to check which you require. For a long key
to fit the keyed versions of the Clubman chuck as well as the
previous model Woodturners chuck, use (340017).

A simple and accurate tool for finding the centre of a piece of

timber. Made from aluminium and pre-drilled for mounting
conveniently near the lathe, it uses a knife-edged steel blade to
score the end of the workpiece. Simply place a square or cylinder
(up to 6 across) in the centre finder, tap it with a mallet, turn the
wood 90 and tap it again. The result is two score lines which
mark the centre of the workpiece. The Veritas Centre Finder
functions well even with work that is not square. Just score the
end of your workpiece four times rather than twice. This will give
you a small polygon and you can then dot the centre of it by eye.
It particularly shines when work has to be replaced on the lathe
after waste ends have been removed. Because it is so accurate,
you can re-establish the exact centre of any cylinder.

These threaded inserts are fitted to some of the range of
Axminster Clubman chucks, faceplates and woodscrew chucks;
they carry the thread which secures the item to the headstock
of the lathe and are secured to the chuck, faceplate, etc. with
four hexagon socket screws. The use of a separate threaded
insert both simplifies the manufacture of the chuck and makes it
possible to use it on lathes with different headstock threads by

A woodturning lathe can be adapted for many applications and
one of the most useful additions to your woodturning lathe is
a sanding table and making use of the lathe as a disc sander. A
wooden disc can be easily turned for attaching the abrasive using
Velcro backed or self-adhesive discs. This support table measures
150 x 100mm with a 25.4 x 94mm tool post and fits into the
tool rest banjo of your lathe. It is provided with slots for easily
attaching your own supplementary table made to your own size

The Axminster wood screw chucks, available in a choice of 38mm

(1.1/2) or 75mm (3) diameter have stainless steel screws with
a thread form specially developed for maximum grip, accurately
and securely mounted in the body. The faces of the chucks have
a slightly raised rim to ensure that the timber is firmly located
and in the case of the larger diameter chucks, there are four holes
provided so that it can double up as a small faceplate. If a scrap
piece of timber is screwed onto a chuck and turned down to the
required size, an effective glue chuck can be produced using hot
melt or Cyanoacrylate adhesive for attaching the workpiece with
minimal waste. As with our faceplate range, for sizes of thread up
to 1 diameter on the 75mm (3) chuck, a threaded insert is fitted
so that if you change your lathe, a new insert can be purchased if
a different thread size is required.
Axminster Faceplates
This comprehensive range of faceplates is CNC-produced for maximum accuracy and perfect balance.
The timber mounting holes are fully countersunk
on the rear face and lightly countersunk on the
front face to ensure proper seating of the timber;
circular grooves are provided to aid the centring of the blank
on the plate. The 100mm and 150mm plates are made with a
separate threaded insert for thread sizes up to 25mm. This allows
the faceplate to be interchanged between lathes with different
headstock threads.
Please note that the 50mm faceplate is available with the 3/4 x
16tpi thread only.

There are three Morse tapers commonly in use
in the headstocks and tailstocks of woodturning
lathes, MT1, MT2 and MT3. The table opposite can
be used as an aid to selecting the correct taper to
suit your lathe. Dont forget that some lathes have

Wood Screw Chuck 75mm
The 75mm wood screw chuck is a very useful device for mounting
a turning blank onto the lathe whilst the initial truing up is carried
out and, in the case of a bowl, the dovetail base is formed. The
chuck comes supplied with a replaceable stainless steel screw
with a core diameter of 7mm and 25mm length of thread to give
maximum grip in your workpiece. A small screw is available with
a core diameter of approximately 4mm and a 19mm tapered
thread for more delicate projects, or a recent addition is a
medium sized screw with a core diameter of 5mm with a parallel
thread 18mm long.

This somewhat oversize centre is particularly useful when turning
large diameter pieces or roughing unbalanced work prior to
chucking, as with end grain hollow forms. The principle is that
the increased diameter of the drive greatly reduces the risk of
slipping due to the increased leverage resulting from turning a
larger diameter workpiece. The diameter of the 4 prong head is

Faceplate Rings
The 38mm (1.1/2) diameter wood screw chuck is a great choice

for drawer knobs, finials and other smaller projects of this type.
The small screw fitted as standard to the chuck has a core
diameter of approximately 4mm and a 19mm tapered thread.
Made to match the A, B, C and F dovetail jaws, these rings do away

with the need for a separate faceplate on which to mount a bowl
blank prior to turning the outside. Simply screw the ring to the
chosen blank with woodscrews and expand the dovetail jaws into
the recess in the centre of the ring.

The light pull drive is a friction drive with steps 1/8(3.2mm),

Another good idea from our woodturning department. An arbor

available with either 1 or 2 Morse taper at one end and a tapered
thread on the other for mounting a polishing mop. A hollow recess
is provided at the tip so that the tailstock can be brought up to
keep the arbor securely in place. The mop can be loaded with the
appropriate polishing compound for putting that final gloss finish
on your work. Be sure to remove the tool rest before doing any

Long Hole Boring Kit
This is an excellent kit for long hole boring on the lathe.
Specifically designed to drill accurate holes in the end grain of
wood mounted on the woodturning lathe, the parabolic flute
design of the Austrian made HSS-M2 steel bit clears the chips
quickly and prevents chip burn. Dimensions are 880mm overall
with 6.5mm shank and a bit diameter of 8mm at the tip tapering
to 7.9mm for clearance. The steel twist-lock handle (178 x 30mm)
is manufactured in Axminster, with a comfortable rubber grip this
handle slides up and down the shaft of the bit ensuring accurate
hole depth and prevents accidental contact of the bit with
your counterbore drive. As with all long hole augers, frequent
withdrawing will help to clear the waste and reduce the risk of

The three items necessary for long hole boring are a long auger, a hollow tailstock centre to accurately locate the auger and, if the
work is to be drilled from both ends, a counterbore drive for the headstock. The hollow centre is used, with the tip in position, to mark
a circular impression on the wood, the tip is then removed and the timber located on the ring impression ready for boring through the
tailstock. When boring right through, the timber is drilled from one end then reversed, a counterbore drive used to hold the timber in the

For parting finished work from the waste, plus other uses like
cutting deep grooves, or, with calipers, cutting a series of grooves to
a specific diameter as when making tenons. Beading tools, generally
made of square bar, are the ideal tool for flicking out beads. Beading
tools can also be used for parting although being broader will

Glenn Lucas is an Irish production bowl turner par excellence and

knows exactly which tool profiles and grinding techniques are
required to get the ultimate performance from his tools. From the
rough turning of an unseasoned bowl blank to the final finishing cuts
on the bowl, a correctly ground and sharpened tool will make the
woodturners task faster, easier and more pleasurable. Hamlet Tools
of Sheffield have produced a range of tools to Glenns designs and,
like all Hamlet tools, the quality is excellent. The GL3 bowl gouge,
(19mm(3/4) bar ground with a 55 bevel) is perfect for the fast rough
shaping of unseasoned timber. The GL4 version features the same
profile on a 16mm(5/8) bar also ground at 55 and is used on smaller
projects. The GL5 gouge is produced from 12.7mm(1/2) bar with a
45 bevel and is a refining tool for fine finishing cuts. The GL6 gouge
(16mm(5/8) bar, 55 bevel) is specifically ground for finishing cuts on
the bottom of a bowl.
Negative rake scapers are also known to have many benefits when
fine finishing cuts are made and a round nosed profile and French
curve versions are available. Comprehensive sharpening instructions
are supplied with each tool and show the correct jig settings when
using jigs from Woodcut, Oneway, Tormek and Robert Sorby.

This simple tool works really well on end grain work, but it can
be used for spindle work too. Primarily designed for use with the
Decorating Elf texturing tool, it is an excellent tool in its own right.
It produces coves quickly and cleanly and defines the areas to
place the ball cutter into for some excellent effects. Sharpening of
the tool is accomplished very easily using a diamond file or any
other fine flat sharpening medium. For best results sharpen to a
polished finish as you would a carving tool.

Jason Breach is a tutor in our Skill Centre here in Axminster and

many students over the years have experienced first hand Jasons
enthusiasm, skill and passion for woodturning. Jason specialises in
box making and for many years has felt the need for some tools that
you just cant obtain off the shelf. So Jason went about adapting
some of his existing tools and they worked so well that he was
encouraged to let others benefit from their use. Three tools are now
available, each playing a role in the production of a typical turned
lidded box.
The 3/4 round nosed refinement tool was designed for fine finishing
cuts on the inside recess of box lids but would be just as useful for
goblet interiors.
The square ended tool works in a similar way to the round nose tool
and shares the same negative rake grinding but in a different profile.
The special skew chisel is of oval section with a flat ground edge on
the long point side of the blade for stability on the tool rest during
paring cuts. The bevels that form the cutting edge are ground
differently in that one is flat ground and the other is convex and
this makes the tool very versatile by leaving more material behind
the edge for very fine scraping cuts. These fine cuts can make the
difference between a lid that fits well and a failure, so a tool designed
for the job makes perfect sense.

The Big Brother system 2 from Hamlet consists of a heavy
duty hollowing tool designed for producing medium to large
hollow forms on your woodturning lathe. A robust handle with a
comfortable grip incorporates a 16mm diameter shaft to which
the cleverly designed cutting tip is attached. A tool designed
for deep hollowing needs to be heavy and well balanced, and
weighing in at approximately 2.2kg, this tool will not disappoint.
The swivelling tip which connects directly to the end of the main
5/8 diameter stem will reach deep into most areas of your vessel.
A curved stem also 5/8 diameter is available as an optional extra
for reaching under overhanging rims. A side handle and tool post
gate giving excellent control of the tool are available as optional
accessories. Sharpening is simple, take a diamond or ceramic
whetstone and in a circular movement hone around the cutting
edge, a few strokes will be enough. Do not hone across the
cutting edge and DO NOT attempt to sharpen the inside and do

Woodcut Pro-Forme Hollowing System

The Woodcut Pro-Forme hollowing system is one of the finest freehand hollowing tools on the market. It has a hardened M2 high
speed steel cutter that is open on the side to prevent clogging,
which is common with other end grain/hollowing tools. Its
adjustable safety gauge determines the depth of cut and prevents
dig-ins. Each cutter is both re-sharpenable using a diamond file
and replaceable to ensure a long working life from these tools.
The straight shaft is the most frequently used tool, it will produce
the opening and remove the wood down the sides and across the
bottom of the vessel. The slight and heavy bent tools are designed
for working under the shoulder of the workpiece through a smaller
opening or with a reverse curve shape that limits the approach of
the straight tool. The 20 (508mm) spigot handle has a comfortable
cushioned grip for long periods at the lathe and if required two
handles can be fitted together for extra length if required.
All Pro-Forme tools feature a heavy duty 5/8 diameter shaft that
will reach up to 10 over the tool rest.

Conceived and manufactured in New Zealand, replaceable tipped
bowl gouges are a clever take on a simple tool. The main advantage
of using these tools is that unlike a conventional gouge, most of
the blade length has no flute. This adds considerably to the strengh
and rigidity of the blade shaft making it more stable and resistant
to vibration during use. For production bowl turning we dont think
you will find a better performing gouge especially when hollowing
deep bowls. Replaceable tips are made from triple tempered M2
high speed steel known to hold its edge and retain its hardness at
high temperatures giving a clean smooth finish. Available in 16mm
and 19mm diameter, these gouges will suit amateur or professional
turner alike.

The new articulated head Flexi hollower from Woodcut Tools is

designed to work on small to medium vessels and it excels at
this. It will comfortably fit through a 15mm aperture due to the
12.7mm (1/2) diameter shaft and no steps in the linkages. The
tool is supplied with two links, a straight and a curved which
are made from high tensile steel to maximise rigidity. The cutter
head is a smaller version of those used on the larger Pro-Forme
hollowing tools and it is made to the same high specification.
It is not a difficult tool to master and the depth of cut is easily
adjustable. If you try it out on some open vessels first, you can
see what is going on and how best to present the cutting head
to the work. This will make things easier when the the cutting
head is out of sight in a hollow vessel. For use on small to medium
sized projects with a depth of no more than 6 to 8 inches, the
achievable depth depends on the size of the opening and
the type of tool support used. Supplied as unhandled with an
optional twin collet handle available to make a truly versatile tool.
Woodcut Mill Drill

The Woodcut MillDrill was designed to make the production of
pepper grinders, that utilise the CrushGrind mechanism, easier and
quicker. However, it is a versatile tool and with some adjustment to
the cutters it can be used to cut a wide range of hole sizes making it
unnecessary to buy a number of drill bits. It can also act as a chuck for
drill bits and Forstner bits with 10mm shanks.
This unit incorporates a No2 Morse Taper so it will fit into the tailstock
of most lathes, this means the drilling process can be done on a lathe.
It has been pre-sharpened ready for immediate use but will need
to be sharpened again when the cutters become dull or blunt. How
regularly you sharpen the cutters will depend on the timber being
used; however, regular touch-ups can be done with a diamond lap
stone.

If you are hollowing out a large bowl, it is such a shame that all of the
material being removed ends up on the workshop floor as shavings.
The prospect of being able to produce a nest of bowls from one
blank is a very attractive option and by using the Bowlsaver coring
device this becomes a simple operation.
The Woodcut Bowlsaver is attached to the lathe via the lathe tool
post and is also supported by a Morse taper that fits into the tailstock
of the lathe (MT2). The Bowlsaver uses two curved blades to give a
combination of cuts that will remove blanks from 75mm (3) up to
300mm (12) from the inside of the outer bowl. The depth that the
blades will go into the wood can be adjusted from zero up to 130mm

(5). This in essence will remove a bowl 300mm (12) x 130mm

(5) from the outer bowl. It works very well on either seasoned or
unseasoned timber and if turned unseasoned, the resulting bowl
blanks can be put aside for seasoning and finishing at a later date. We
would recommend a minimum power requirement of 1hp for using
this system. N.B. In addition to the Bowlsaver, you will need to choose
the correct diameter tool post to suit your lathe from those listed.

The perfect partner for the Flexi hollower, this handle is supplied
with both 10 and 13mm collets. The collet not being used is
simply stored conveniently in the opposite end of the handle. The
beautifully engineered collet chuck ejects the collet for quickly
removing or adjusting the tool shaft. Standard ER engineering
collets are employed so other sizes could be added as required.

Cup Tool for Twin Collet Handle

A simple hollowing and slicing tool with affordable replacement
cutters that can be easily sharpened. The cup tool can be used
to hollow small end grain goblets and vases. Cutting from the
centre outwards, it should be presented on its side with the bevel
rubbing and is quite user friendly. Use it to do the final finishing
cuts on bowl interiors when you only want to remove the
minimum amount of material. It leaves an excellent finish and is
very effective when used with curly or burred grain.

The laser attachment is a new accessory for the Bowl Saver that
lets you see the precise path the knife will follow in the wood. The
laser post mounts onto the pivot bolt of the Bowl Saver so it can
be moved by hand in the same arc as the cutter.
The laser guide allows you to check the set-up on your jig to
make sure you do not go through the bottom or sides of your
bowl. It is also, a perfect method for making nested bowls. There
are two positions on the arm to correspond with the two cutters,
you just select which cutter you have in use.

Attaining the correct profiles

on your turning tools could
transform your turning, and the
advantages of using a jig are
that the angles are easily repeatable and less material is removed
at each sharpening. The tool is clamped into a holder mounted
on the end of a pivot leg; the end of the leg rotates in a conical
housing in the horizontal support bar. Grinding of gouges is
carried out by rotating the tool from side to side whilst parting
tools, skew chisels and the like are laid flat on the wheel at the
correct angle. For that classic fingernail profile with swept back
wings on your bowl gouges, this is the jig that will produce it with
one perfect single facet bevel.
An optional additional base and slide for your Tru-Grind

sharpening system is available and enables you to use your
jig at both ends of your bench grinder. This can be especially
useful if you have different grades of stone or you could set up
for different types of turning tools at each wheel. The bases are
set up to fit the right hand side of your grinder, but they are
reversible to fit either end.

Before applying a surface finish to your bowls, it is desirable to

leave a surface without any visible sanding marks. This can be
difficult using normal methods and all too often, tell tale rings are
left to spoil your best efforts for a perfect finish. One of the best
ways of eliminating this problem is to use a rotating sanding pad
driven by the rotation of the lathe. By working through different
grit types starting with the coarsest and applying light pressure,
you can achieve a surface well prepared for the finish of your
choice. The Axminster Deluxe bowl sanding kit contains two

Cyanoacrylates (CA) have traditionally been called super glues for
their adhesion properties to a wide range of different materials and
their effectiveness for unique applications. The Titebond Instant
range of CA adhesives covers many different applications; the
viscosity and setting times vary according to the chosen product.
The Thin version has a handling time of 5 seconds and a setting
time of 3 seconds and is good for running into hairline cracks for
repairs and stabilising small sections of timber. The Medium version
has a 7 seconds handling time and a setting time of 5 seconds, and
would be a more general purpose type of CA glue.
The Thick version has a 10 seconds handling and 8 seconds set
time making it ideal for stabilising porous woods and using with
MDF and trimming carpentry components.
The Gel has a 30 seconds handling with a 20 seconds set time and
has excellent gap filling properties. Again its performance is very
good when used with porous materials. Available in a 56.8g(2oz)
bottle with the Medium also available in a 28.4g(1oz) bottle for
convenience.

This finish will give protection against

both heat and water. It can be used alone

a superior finish. Quick drying due to

Polishing Mop Arbor
A 50g stick whose main ingredient is carnauba wax but blended

with other secret substances to slightly soften and improve the
flow properties, pure carnauba being so hard it would actually
scratch the workpiece. Apply to bare wood or over sanding sealer
or friction polish. When buffed it produces a warm glow with a
hard, lasting finish. Any woodturner worth their salt will always
carry one of these in their apron pocket.
Another good idea from our woodturning department. An arbor

available with either 1 or 2 Morse taper at one end and a tapered
thread on the other for mounting a polishing mop. A hollow recess
is provided at the tip so that the tailstock can be brought up to
keep the arbor securely in place. The mop can be loaded with the
appropriate polishing compound for putting that final gloss finish
on your work. Be sure to remove the tool rest before doing any

Liberon Liming Wax

A rich white paste wax which will give a dramatic grained finish
to all open grain timbers particularly oak or ash. It may be applied
to bare wood but for a really dramatic effect stain the wood first.
Before applying the wax, first open the grain using a bronze hand
or similar brush, apply the paste with a pad of 0000 steel wool
and fill the grain completely. After a few minutes, finish by waxing
with clear Black Bison. This will remove any excess liming wax and
impart a deep shine when buffed.

fineness of its crystal structure. It is a very durable water resistant

need to produce a high gloss finish on wood, hard and soft. It

These buff and brown compounds are great products for metal
polishing, but also make excellent polishing compounds for
woodturning projects, bringing your work to a beautiful high
gloss with the use of polishing mops. We would recommend

Tru-Grind Cubic Boron Nitride(CBN) grinding wheels are a

revelation for the sharpening of HSS turning tools. CBN abrasive
is a similar product to synthetic industrial diamonds, but a CBN
wheel is far better suited for sharpening high speed steels and
will withstand the friction from grinding with much less heat
produced than with a diamond wheel. They produce hardly any
sparks, cut quickly and efficiently and will last for many years. No
dressing is required and they leave a nice fine and even sharp
edge.

polyester blanks, you will be interested to learn
that we can now supply a range of polyester project kit blanks of
larger dimensions than the pen blanks. The size of these blanks is
114 x 35mm which gives you more choice in the way you can use
the material. For instance, you could use the material for turning
larger projects such as bottle stoppers, light pulls, pendants and
knobs or by cutting the blank lengthwise into four pieces, you will
have four pen blanks at your disposal. We recommend the use
of wet and dry abrasives for finishing this product followed by
burnishing cream. Let your imagination run wild!

Pen Mandrels and Bushings
Turning pens, pencils and other similar items is one of the most
satisfying of turning activities; the timber requirement is minimal,
the cost in terms of time spent is very little and yet the result can
be an item of great beauty, mightier than the sword and useful
either as a gift or for writing a catalogue! However, pen turning
does require a degree of precision, particularly in getting the
component parts concentric and of uniform diameter, and a pen
mandrel is the best way of achieving a good result. The mandrel
consists of a parallel shaft with a suitable mounting taper or
parallel section at one end and a countersink at the other for
supporting in the tailstock. Spacers are provided for locating the
pen components correctly and there is a knurled nut to keep
everything securely in place. The mandrel diameter is about 7mm
and will accept the majority of the kits without the need for extra
components. However, some of the kits have larger diameter
bores and will need additional bushing sets, details of which are
noted with the pens, where applicable.

These mandrels are machined with either parallel or Morse
taper mounting and have a shoulder to assist with removal.
They are supplied with a number of spacers for locating the pen
components. N.B. If bushing sets are required it will be stated
within the description of each kit.

An effective solution to the sometimes tricky job of pen assembly.
A nylon pad, adjustable for position, protects any plated parts of
the pen body whilst the toggle clamp applies an even pressure
to press the other end of the pen into position. The press is fixed
to a smart looking hardwood base board which can be either
clamped or screwed to the bench. The maximum opening of the
press is 130mm and the toggle clamp has a travel of 33mm. An
excellent investment for the keen penmaker.

The advantages of this pen mandrel design are that spacers are
no longer necessary to make up the difference between the
length of the pen blanks and the mandrel. This also helps to
eliminate any vibration encountered when turning blanks on
a longer than necessary mandrel shaft. The length of the shaft
is adjustable and can be shortened or extended by loosening
the locknut at the headstock end. By simply removing the shaft,
you also have a really compact and versatile collet chuck which
is extremely useful for holding small components for turning.

Universal Pen Barrel Trimmer
If you have turned any of our wine bottle stopper kits, you will
appreciate the usefulness of this simple device. After drilling your
chosen blank and securing the screw from the kit into it, you
simply screw the blank onto the arbor. With tailstock support, turn
the required shape using the diameter of the nylon washer as a
guide. When you are happy with the profile, remove the tailstock
support and clean up the end of the stopper and finish as required.
Complete the assembly of the kit and stand back and admire your
masterpiece. N.B. We now receive supplies of our bottle stopper kits
with a metric thread and future shipments will be of this type. We
therefore now offer a metric version of the arbor to cater for this
change. The difference in threads can be recognised by the colour
of the threaded rod supplied with the kits. 5/16 UNC imperial are
coloured gold and M8 metric are coloured silver.

18mm diameter by 87mm long and we would recommend a
wood blank of around 30mm diameter by 80mm long for turning

swinging pendulum makes a most
attractive and eye-catching project. It has a
clear off white dial with Roman figures and
a brass bezel. The movement is fitted from
the rear through a hole in the mounting
(approx. 68mm dia.) and a suitable slot is
made for the pendulum bob to be viewed.
A good level of accuracy is required in
order to achieve a good fit between the
bezel and its mounting hole. Requires 1 x
