Day One
1. Ask students to join me on the carpet. On the smart board artist Vincent
van Gogh will be introduced.
2. We will look at the painting The Starry Night and do VTS over it. I will ask
them: What do you see? Why do you say that? What in this painting gives
you clues?
Talk about how the painting makes them feel. What emotions come
from looking at this painting? Do colors effect certain emotions?
3. Student will then go back to their seat and we will discuss the sky and the
stars. They will share things they know and thing they have questions about.
4. Have the students make a list of 5-10 adjectives that describes the
painting and then shares these with the class.
5. Science: After this begins discussing the weather with the students. What
does the weather need to be like in order for it to be a starry night? Any
questions to get them thinking about they sky and stars.
Day Two
1. Start the lesson by showing the students a video of The Starry Night.
2. Have student pretend they are outside on a very starry night just like the
one they have been looking at. Have them write a story or a letter
describing what they are seeing.

illustrate this.

few VTS questions about the painting.
2. Next we will discuss techniques that Van Gogh used in his painting
including is post-impressionism style.
3. I will have a table in the front of the room including: paper, oil pastels and
crayons and watercolors, the brushes and cups. Since the students are
younger I will talk about the proper ways to use these materials.
4. I will show the class how to use the crayons and paint over them with
watercolors to give it a different look and how you cannot use the oil pastels
on your paper if it is already wet from the watercolors.
5. The entire time Van Goghs painting will be on the smart board. I also will
give them an example of the project I completed.
6. I will use my description of my starry night to create my project. I will try
to use post-impressionism style including large dashes and colors that blend
together.
7. Once everyone has been checked off for completing their writing, they
will be called up table by table to pick up supplies including the paper and
crayons.
8. Students will go back to their seat and begin completing their own
interpretation of the painting.
9. Each two students will share the watercolors and I will designate one of
them to fill the cup up with water to use the paints.
10. Student will work until the time is up. The opposite person that filled
the water cups will properly dispose of the water and the other child will
begin to clean up.
11. Student will all place their artwork on the drying rack until later in the
day or the following day when they will share about their work.
12. I will ask them things such as: tell me about your art, why did you make
that decision, what types of emotion did you include in your picture? Is it
peaceful, happy or sad? We will spend a good chunk of time letting each
student share about their artwork over the next two days.

could ever count.

What student prior knowledge will this lesson require/draw upon?

1. The students will already know expectations for writing.
2. The students will have done VTS on pieces of artwork and pictures previously.
3. They will have experience with working with these materials.
How will you engage students in imagining, exploring, and/or experimenting in this lesson?
1. By completing VTS the students will get to imagine what is happening in the picture while exploring art.
2. They will get to reflect on the emotion that the picture brings and how it makes them feel.
3. Students will explore their own emotions and play around with how they can related to their artwork.

How will this lesson allow for/encourage students to solve problems in divergent ways?
Throughout the art project I will not provide on correct way to complete the project. There will be criteria they need to meet but many different ways they
could complete the project.
How will you engage students in routinely reflecting on their learning?
1. We will continually reflect on the original piece and their own personal piece over the process of this project.
How will you adapt the various aspects of the lesson to differently-abeled students?
The paper for this lesson will be pre cut so the students will no have to do it. If a student needs some extra help I will assign a super star that can work
along side this student and answer any questions they may have and provide extra assistance. The lesson is designed to be approached in many different
ways so there is not one correct way.
