1.) Socratic Questions 8-18-14

1. What are the steps of the Socratic method of thought?
-for people not to base their beliefs through opinions but to have their own
logical thoughts and reasoning for why they feel a way. He wants people to
think, to be a philosopher.
2. Respond to the quote-The unexamined life is not worth living
-A life that has not been carefully viewed upon and well researched for the
meaning of their life they are living and if they dont examine or know what
their life is about its not worth it to live.
3. How effective are focus and research groups?
-its effective because it gives everyone a chance to state their own beliefs
and opinions of what they feel and not be judged or told it is wrong.
4. Is every opinion worth listening to? And is the majority opinion always
correct?
-yes because you would want somebody to listen to you and your opinion
and try to understand you and no because everybody believes in different
things and some people may not agree with it.
Rationale for this exercise
For this exercise it was the first daybook entry we did

and the questions were asked from a documentary we
watched in class. The reason I chose this daybook entry
was because it was the first daybook entry we did and for
that reason I feel it is the most important.
2.) The letter from Birmingham reading argument on pg.812 - 8/25/14
1. The letter from Birmingham jail is considered a rogerian argument
because he was trying to convince the opposed merits of his argument,
he wanted to help them to understand his point of view and provide
them with supporting evidence for his claims. He used many types of
emotions in his letter including pathos, logos and ethics. He also used
rhetorical questions in the letter to get the people to agree with him.
2.He uses analogies throughout the whole letter and I believe he uses these
analogies like and just as the apostle Paul left his village of tarsus and
carried the gospel of Jesus Christ to the far corners of the Greco-Roman
world; so am I compelled to carry the gospel of freedom beyond my own
home town. His quotations from Abraham Lincoln This nation cannot
survive half slave half free, and Thomas Jefferson We hold these to be
self-evident that all men are created equal. In doing this analogies and
quotations he is establishing his intelligence. These analogies allowed
Dr.King to properly deliver his message to the clergy men, they are related
to his political goals because his goal was to get rid of segregation not only
in communities but in south as a whole and to carry the gospel of freedom
throughout the south.
3. Direct action according to king is sit-ins, marches, and so on. He uses
nonviolent direct action in doing this he says the purpose of direct action
is for negotiation. Its to create a situation so crisis packed that it will
inevitably open the door to negotiation.
4. He uses more emotional language on pg803 when he was talking about
the killings of African Americans, the poverty of blacks and the asking of
the little children of why white people treat colored people so mean? And
why they cant go to the amusement park? I think he is trying to appeal to
the clergymens emotions by trying to get them on his side and understand
what blacks go through. Yes I feel like the language effectively supports his
argument because he uses it for his benefit and yes I feel like it appealed to
his original audience.
5. The two honest confessions he makes in his letter are that 1).He was
gravely disappointed with the white moderate. He believes they have been
the largest obstacle to integration and black freedom.2) He also confesses a
response to the clergymen. He said in the letter the clergymen stated that his
actions should be condemned because they precipitate violence. He believes
that it is not a logical assertion. He feels like its like condemning a robbed
man because his possession of money precipitated the evil act of robberyHe also compares it to the Socrates and Jesus Christ.
For this exercise it was a homework daybook entry in our
textbook that we had to complete after we read the letter
from a Birmingham jail letter by Martin Luther king
Jr.The reason I chose this daybook entry is because it
was one of the most intellectual an great writings that I
have ever read. To me it was a significant exercise and I
could show what I took from it.

For this exercise it was also a homework daybook entry
in our textbook that we had to complete that involved
examples deductive and deductive situations that we
had to figure out and then we went over in class. The
reason I chose this entry was because I feel like
deductive and inductive reasoning are two broad
methods that I learned to identify.
4.) Exercise 15.3 9-15/14
.1.Its a proposal argument because the image is obviously stating that the
state of New York wastes a lot of recycled paper and something should be
done about it.
2. The problem it identifies is that New York City every year throws out
400,000 tons of recycled paper.
3. The solution it proposes is for people to start recycling their paper from
magazines, catalogs and other people to help fight global climate change.
4. The arguments it proposes is the amount the amount of paper New York
City wastes every year which is 400,000 and how that is a huge problem.
Think about it thats enough to fill the empire state building!
5 the image in the ad helps support the proposal is the stack of magazines,
books and catalogs it takes to fill the empire state building. It encourages the
readers to recycle.
For this exercise it was a homework daybook entry we
had in our textbooks that we had to complete after we
read an ad that talked about New York City recycling.
The reason I chose this daybook entry was because I

wanted to show how I understood what images can
interpret basically and what images can emphasize and
to also let people know that new York has the highest
rate of not recycling just because Im from there and it
because I wanted to show how important it is to recycle.

identify statements as logical or other fallacies. The
reason I chose this daybook entry was because I
wanted to show the different analogies there are and
how I correctly identified them.
