Herbivory
Species of all types tend to each different species. Of these species, plants are the most
abundant. Herbivory is the percentage of a plant that has been eaten by insect or animals. The
percentage is made by identifying the area of the leaf then subtracting the eaten portion of the
plant. Looking at the research question it is seen that does herbivory effect the plants? With a
hypothesis of:
Ho- Herbivory does effect the plants
Ha- Herbivory doesnt effect the plants
Method
This lab had our group look for two individual species of plants. For each type of plant
we collected 30 leaves total. 10 from each individual plant. This came to a total of 60 leaves. The
group then traced each leaf on paper and measured the area and area of herbivory to calculate the
percentage of herbivory. That was done with the equation:
X 100

Plant A
Plant B
Looking at table one it can be seen that there was a more percentage of herbivory in plant B than
there was in plant A. This means that plant A would have more defenses against herbivory that
Plant B would. This also means that Plant B in general would be more likely to have a higher
biomass and more at risk of dying out.

Discussion
The basic idea of this lab was to identify the percentages of herbivory of plant species. In
these species the question is does the percentage of herbivory effect the plants? I have accepted
the hypothesis that it does effect it. This is due to the fact that the more herbivory there is, the
more biomass the plant creates to compensate for the lack of foliage. It also effects weather the
plant will die. In aspect it is impossible to understand the full spectrum of what is happening
because of the limited pull of plants and species so in future studies it would be good to have
more of each to document. It would also help to know the identification of each plant species and
the abundance in the certain area.
