Course Outline
Course Description: This course examines communications technology from a media perspective. Students will
developknowledgeandskillsastheydesignandproducemediaprojectsintheareasoflive,recorded,andgraphic
communications. TheseareasmayincludeTV,video,andmovieproduction;radioandaudioproduction;printand
graphiccommunications;photography;digitalimagine;broadcastjournalism;andinteractivenewmedia.Studentswill
alsodevelopanawarenessofrelatedenvironmentalandsocietalissues,andwillexplorecollegeanduniversityprograms
andcareeropportunitiesinthevariouscommunicationstechnologyfields.

ASSESSMENT/EVALUATION STRATEGIES:

Thiscoursewillexpandonstudentsunderstandingofthetermmedia,androlethatdifferenttypesofmediahave
playedinthedevelopmentofhumancultureandthought.Studentswillbeintroducedtotheideaoftechnological
determinism,OrsonWelles1938WaroftheWorldbroadcast,thefivestagesoftechnologicaldevelopment,theprocess
ofglobalizationandtheinfluenceofbothmediaandsocialforces.
Unit2Extra,Extra:PrintandAdvertisements
Thisunitwillfurtherexpandstudentsknowledgeofprint,advertisementanddesign.Studentsfocusontheelements
andprinciplesofdesignandexploreicons,logosandslogans.
Unit3FlashtotheRescue:FilmandPhotography
Thisunitprovidesanoverviewofstillandmotionphotography.Thisevolutionexploresimportantfiguressuchas:
EtienneJulesMarey,EadweardMuybridge,ThomasEdison,AugusteandLouisLumiere,GeorgesMlis,andEdwin
Porter.
Unit4PrimeTime:RadioandTelevision
Thisunitwillexaminethefigureandtechnologiesthatledtothearrivalofradiointhelate19 thcenturyaswellas
technologicaladvancementsrequiredforthemassviewingoftelevisioninthe1950s.

Studentswillapplywhattheyhavelearntthroughoutthetermtorespondtoavarietyofkeyquestionsrelatingtohow
theInternetwillchangeandshapethenatureofcommunicationtechnologiesinthenextdecade.
