Structuring your interview: Scripts and Question Formulation Harry

Question: Could you give us a brief insight to your career in filmmaking?

Likely Response:
My career in film making has spanned over 10 years now,
which has consisted of creating three indie/Americana
short films.

Next Question: Did you come across any difficulties when you first started off as a
film maker when it came to promotion?

Likely Response:
Yes of course! Everyone once in the film making career will
come across some problems, no one is perfect.

Next Question: Have there been situations when your method of promotion hasnt
worked as well as you expected? If so what do you think went wrong?

Likely Response:
Yes, I used social media but only social media. This was
back when I was starting off, its a lot easier if youre
starting off to go around self-publicizing rather than just
straight up putting it on social media.

Production Booklet

Question: What are your thoughts on the massive growth of social media and how it
has become easier to promote via them?

Likely Response:
Personally I think its brilliant, I love the fact that every new
budding film maker can get there stuff seen by everyone so
quickly and so easily.

Next Question: So would you say that right now, social media is the best form of
promotion or are there other forms that you prefer?

Likely Response:
No social media, now social media has become huge over
the past few years, its become so easy and effective.

Next Question: Out of the three films you have made, which one did you enjoy
making the most and why?

Likely Response:
I think it would have to be the first one, purely because it
was the first film id ever made and I learnt so much from
the people around me.

Production Booklet

Question: Are you planning on creating any new films in the near future?

Likely Response:
Yes actually I have just finished filming my fourth short film,
which is now in its post-production stage.

Next Question: Finally, for people at home who are thinking of make a film and
promoting it themselves, could you give them any advice to help them along?

Likely Response:
Dont always rely on social media, all though its brilliant it
always helps a little more to go out and put up flyers or
whatever you can think of.

Next Question:

Likely Response:

Production Booklet

Structuring your interview: Scripts and Question Formulation Charles

Question: recent press have stated that OSCARs academy President Addresss
controversy over All-White acting nominees. Are you aware of this?

Likely Response:
Yes of course

Next Question: Do you think that more black actors and actresses should have
greater involvement in the Oscar nominations for the sake of the Controversy or
should it still be bases on the talent of the actors and actresses? Regardless of
race.

Likely Response: I think that the Oscars should be based

on talent. Thats how its always been and the most recent
nominations were given to the lead role and unfortunately
there were no black lead roles in the nominated films.

Next Question: Do you have an opinion on the diversity in the acting world? Do you
think that there are too many British actors taking the so called great American
roles?

Likely Response:

Production Booklet

Question: Al Sharptons response to the Oscars all-white nominees. The movie

industry is like the Rocky Mountains, the higher you get, the whiter it gets
What is your take on his response?

Likely Response:

Next Question: Since 1954 only four black actors and one actress have won Oscars
for leading roles. Do you think that this will push Cheryl Boone Isaacs, the
president of the OSCARS to make sure there is more diversity within the academy's
ranks?

Likely Response:

Interview Style for Interview One

What will your interview style be? (formal, informal and chatty, intense, questioning, argumentative,
friendly, jokey)
The interview style that I will be trying to achieve will be informal, chatty and friendly throughout

Why have you chosen that style?

I have chosen this style because this way I can make the interviewee as comfortable as possible
which will make them answer the questions with ease and confidence and perhaps get a better
answer from them.

Add research of other interview/chat shows where the presenter has a similar style. You can insert
another page here for your research.

Hello, and welcome to Medialink.
Today we will be covering the
Upcoming films and red carpet events,
I will be talking to media students
About the latest issues and topics.
[FOOTAGE OF RED CARPET EVENT]

(Insert 1st clip 17 seconds) We will be talking to Harry who is

Live at the Henley College, and Charles
Who will be discussing the controversy
Around the Oscars and finally we will be
Closing our programme with Joe discussing
The best films of last year with
A film studies student.
(36 secs)
But firstly Im joined today by
Will Farman to discuss the
Events surrounding red carpet
Events.

Hello, Will. Firstly lets

Start off talking about your
Opinions on the topic. Based on your knowledge
of the industry, do you think that the anticipated
films coming in 2015 will be considered as
successful projects, both for the actors
and the industry of film, and why?
(14 secs)
(Insert 2nd clip 17 seconds) Moving onto the topic
Of the upcoming film, we will
Now talk about the actor roles

Of the film. Initially Ryan Gosling,

Production Booklet

Ben Affleck and Brad Pitt were cast

to play the main roles in the new
upcoming film Focus, what do you think
of this unexpected decision from the
actors dropping out and do you think it
was a good decision for the main role
to be replaced by Will Smith?
(15 secs)
(insert 3rd clip 30 seconds) Onto the topic of success,
The film Focus is critically
acclaimed to be one of the best
blockbuster hits of 2015, does
this place too much pressure on
Will Smith and could this eventually
be a peak project in his recent career.

Now we go over to Harry reporting live from the Henley college campus, where he
will be interviewing independent film maker Nic Saunders.

(HARRY) 15:45:54
(8 secs)
Thanks Kaan.
Hi there Im joined here by Nic Saunders an independent film maker and also a
teacher here at the Henley College. Hi Nic, How are you?
Could you give us a brief insight to your career in filmmaking?
Now the topic that we are going to be discussing is around independent films
and how they are publicized and promoted to the public. Independent films are
not produced by the big major studios so they have considerably lower budgets
and also they have to find their own way of promoting their film. Now, youve
had first-hand experience in having to promote your films. Did you come across
any difficulties when you first started off as a film maker when it came to
promotion?
Have there been situations when your method of promotion hasnt worked as well
as you expected? If so what do you think went wrong.
Social media, especially Facebook and Twitter have been very good platforms for
promotion over the past few years, this is mainly because you are able to
search and target people based on their interests like the topic of a film.
What are your thoughts on the massive growth of social media and how it has
become easier to promote via them?

Production Booklet

So would you say that right now, social media is the best form of promotion or
are there other forms that you prefer?

Out of the three films you have made, which one did you enjoy making the most
and why?
Are you planning on creating any new films in the near future?
Finally, for people at home who are thinking of make a film and promoting it
themselves, could you give them any advice to help them along?
Brilliant, thank you very much for your time Nic. Now back to the studio were
we will have Charles discussing the OSCARS and the controversy around them.

(Insert 4th clip 1:03)

(CHARLES)
(20 secs)
Over the past few months a lot of talk about the lack of ethnic actors winning
an Oscar has hit the headlines.
Since 1958 17 black actors have been nominated for best actor but only four
have won.
In that same time only 9 black actresses have been nominated for with only
Halle Berry winning.
(25 secs)
Im joined today by Film lecturer and Film enthusiast Andrea Walter to discuss
the ethnic issues facing Hollywood at the moment.
So, Andrea I understand youve been a film studies teacher for over 10 years
now. You must have a huge knowledge of the film industry.
So as a lover of film did you get a chance to watch the Oscars?
(5 secs)
What did you think of the winners and were there any shock wins for you?
Recent press have stated that OSCARS academy is an all-white
Do you think this is fair to say?
(10 secs)
Do you think that more black actors and actresses should have greater
involvement in the OSCAR nominations or should it still be based on the talent
of the actors and actresses regardless of race?
(16 secs)
Al Sharptons response to the Oscars all white nominees was that The movie
industry is like the Rocky Mountains, the higher it gets the whiter it gets
What is your take on his response?

Production Booklet

(6 secs)
Can you think of any roles/ Actors who should have won an award but didnt
because of their race?
(12 secs)
Moving away from the ethnic controversy. It seems that more English actors are
being nominated and winning than ever before. Why do think we are winning these
awards now?
(12 secs)
British films are starting to move away from the kitchen sink genre and more
towards the typical Hollywood style of film making do you think that this is
why our actors are winning more?
(5 secs)
As a film teacher do you enjoy teaching British or American films more?

Thanks Andrea thats all we have time for. Now over to joe with his film review
of 2014.

(Insert 5th clip 1:54)

(JOE)
(15 secs)
2014 saw a larger range of independent style biopics based on the storytelling
and characters rather than the graphics of previous years. Chris Bennett an
avid film goer who is currently studying Film is here to give us his personal
opinion on just a handful of these films.
(10 secs)
Chris you frequently attend the cinema and have seen the majority, if not all
of the big blockbusters and indie films of 2014. What has been your overall
feeling of the quality of films of this year?
(10 secs)
Now there has been a lot of films released in 2014, with a wide range of genres
and styles. But what films have practically stood out for you?
(23 secs)
The Theory of everything has been critically acclaimed in the film industry
recently for its beautiful looking cinematography and award winning acting. The
film that stars Eddie Redmayne as Steven Hawking and Felicity Jones as Jane
wild has made well over $60 million in worldwide box-offices. (insert 6th clip
0:52)
Looking at reviews of the film it seems to be getting a really good response
from the general public and critics, what was your first opinion on the film?
(12 secs)

Production Booklet

Although it has got a good response by many, some people have described it as a
safe film just designed to get awards and say it also doesnt really giving
the amazing story justice? Do you agree with this?
(15 secs)
The Imitation game staring Benedict Cumberbatch has also be one of the big
pioneering films of 2014.(insert 7th clip 0:52) What was your overall feeling
and opinion of the film? Do you feel like Benedict gave the role what it
needed?

Production Booklet

Define the format of your programme

What will happen in the first segment?
In the first segment of our TV program will be Kaan introducing the program then talking about the contents
of what is to come in the program. He will then go on to talk about his topic which is red carpet events. He
will be interviewing a pupil from the film studies class.

What will happen in the second segment?

Linking with Kaans section on red carpet events, this part I will be reporting live from Leicester square in
central London where I will be interviewing Will Smith at the London premiere of his new film starring
Margot Robbie focus.

What will happen in the third segment?

Going back to the studio, we will then have Charles interviewing Andrea the film studies teacher at the
college about the recent Oscar nominations and the general controversy of the awards.

Production Booklet

Any further notes;

To wrap up the programme we will have Joe talking to a film expert and discussing the best films of 2014.

Production Booklet

Using your mind map, answer the following questions.

What will the presentation style be? (formal, informal and chatty)

For our production, we are going to try and keep it informal so our guests that we have on the show will feel
as relaxed and comfortable as possible. This way I believe that they will be able to answer in a more
comfortable way. Although we want an informal chatty style of program but we also want it to be informative
and include plenty of information.

Add research of other interview/chat shows where the presenter has a similar style.

The style that we are going for is similar to American late night chat shows like the tonight show. These
shows are fairly informal but also keep the audiences attention and have meaningful questions.

Production Booklet

Define the visual style of your show.

The visual style for our production will be modern and somewhat similar to the setup of the Jimmy Fallon
show shown in America.
Our set for our production will be quite simple. In the centre we will have the presenter sitting at a desk
directly in front of camera 3. To the right of the presenters desk, there will be a two seat sofa which is
where the guests will sit when they are being interviewed.
This will all be in front of a green screen background which we will then decide on a background and then
add it in when it comes to post production.

Stick in relevant images of previous shows, interiors you would like to emulate, lighting style etc.

Links
How will you link each interview to each other?
(You may use cut aways to clips of them doing something relevant. Remember you will all be
swapping roles so you may not be able to film live at this point.)

Link between interview 1 and Interview 2

Interview 1 and 2 are very similar as they both are either at a red carpet event or are interviewing
someone about them.

Link between interview 2 and Interview 3

I will be interviewing Nic Saunders, an independent film maker where we will be talking about the
promotion of independent films that arent being backed by the big 5 studios

There will be a transition clip between these two interviews

Link between interview 3 and Interview 4

After Charles has finished talking to his expert, Joe will be discussing the best movies of 2014 in his
opinion which will include films that have been nominated for Oscars such as the theory of everything.

There will be a transition clip between these two interviews
