CHAPTER 5

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Conclusion
The researchers conclude that the test solutions: 0.25 ml/20 g mouse, 0.50 ml/20 g
mouse and 1 ml/ 20 g mouse dose of test juice of Sechium edule and Abelmoschus
esculentus all have hypoglycemic effect. Among the test solutions, 0.25 ml/20 g mouse
dose of test juice of A. esculentus had the highest percent reduction of blood glucose
followed by 0.50 mg/20 g mouse dose of test juice of S. edule, 0.50 ml/20 g mouse dose
of test juice of A. esculentus, 0.25 mg/20 g mouse dose of test juice of S. edule, 1 ml/20 g
mouse dose of test juice of S. edule and lastly 1 ml/ 20 g mouse dose of test juice of A.
esculentus. In comparison to the positive control (glipizide), glipizide still had the highest
percent reduction.
Based on the statistical findings, there were differences in the hypoglycemic
effects of the test solutions and these differences proved to be significant in terms of the
percent reduction of the blood glucose levels between the test solutions. Statistics show
that 0.25 ml/20 g mouse and 0.50 ml/20g mouse dose of test juice of A. esculentus, 0.25
mg/20 g mouse and 0.50 mg/20 g mouse dose of test juice of S. edule and the positive
control basically had the same level of hypoglycemic effect.
Terpenes, reducing sugars, alkaloids and flavonoids are present in both the test
juice of A. esculentus and S. edule which could account for their hypoglycemic effect.
Recommendation
The researchers recommend isolation of constituents to find out specifically what
constituents are responsible for the hypoglycemic activity of A. esculentus and S. edule.
It is recommended that another positive control be used for the comparison of the
hypoglycemic activity of both plants. Lastly, the researchers recommend the use of other
extraction methods of these plants other than using decoction.
