buildings. In a d d i t i o n t o t h e b u i l d i n g s that c o l l a p s e d , o v e r a million b u i l d i n g s w e r e d a m a g e d ; s u c h
b u i l d i n g s n e e d m i n o r a n d m a j o r repair. N e e d l e s s t o s a y t h a t s i m p l e a n d s u p e r f i c i a l repair t o buildi n g s d o e s not r e s t o r e t h e lost s t r e n g t h ; it o n l y h i d e s t h e c r a c k s , l e a v i n g t h e b u i l d i n g in a w e a k e n e d

T h e K a c h c h h e a r t h q u a k e in G u j a r a t o c c u r r e d o n t h e 2 6

January, 2001 and caused massive

d e s t r u c t i o n to p r o p e r t y a n d loss of life in t h e t o w n s of B h a c h a u , A n j a r , R a p a r , B h u j a n d G a n d h i d h a m
as well a s t h o u s a n d s of v i l l a g e s . T h i s e a r t h q u a k e h a d a R i c h t e r M a g n i t u d e of 6 . 9 a n d s u r f a c e
m a g n i t u d e M s = 7 . 7 ( U S G S ) a n d s t r u c k t h e r e g i o n at 8 . 4 6 a m local t i m e , w i t h t h e s h a k i n g lasting
for a f e w m i n u t e s . O t h e r m a j o r cities in G u j a r a t e.g., A h m e d a b a d a n d J a m n a g a r , w h i c h are h u n d r e d s
of k i l o m e t r e s a w a y , w e r e a l s o a f f e c t e d b y t h e e a r t h q u a k e .

p o o r l y c o n s t r u c t e d b u i l d i n g s , c o l l a p s i n g e i t h e r totally or partially;

b)

w a l l s c o l l a p s i n g w i t h i n n a r r o w s t r e e t s , b u r y i n g p e o p l e e s c a p i n g into t h e m ;

c)

untied roofs a n d cantilevers falling onto people;

d)

free standing high b o u n d a r y walls, parapets and balconies falling due to the sever
shaking; and

e)

g a b l e w a l l s f a l l i n g o v e r after c r a c k i n g u n d e r lateral t h r u s t of t h e roof.

S u r p r i s i n g l y , r e i n f o r c e d c o n c r e t e f r a m e b u i l d i n g s of v e r y r e c e n t c o n s t r u c t i o n in cities like
Bhuj, G a n d h i d h a m a n d A h m e d a b a d a l s o b e h a v e d badly, m a n y of t h e m c o l l a p s i n g totally killing t h e
i n m a t e s in h u n d r e d s . T h i s h a p p e n e d b e c a u s e of
a)

large o p e n s p a c e s at g r o u n d to first f l o o r level, in b u i l d i n g s o n stilt f o r p a r k i n g or


s h o p s (soft s t o r e y c o l l a p s e s )

b)

f o u n d a t i o n s r e s t i n g s o n soft soils, a b s e n c e of i n t e r c o n n e c t i n g plinth level b e a m s ;


and

c)

b a d q u a l i t y of d e s i g n as well a s c o n s t r u c t i o n .

T h o s e b u i l d i n g s w h i c h w e r e partly or totally d e s t r o y e d l^iave n a t u r a l l y to b e rebuilt, a n d for


s a f e t y in future, m u s t b e c o n s t r u c t e d u s i n g a d e q u a t e e a r t h q u a k e r e s i s t i n g m e a s u r e s a c c o r d i n g to
t h e v a r i o u s Indian s t a n d a r d s a n d a p p r o p r i a t e g u i d e l i n e s ( s e e list of R e f e r e n c e s . )
T h e r e are, h o w e v e r , m a n y t i m e s m o r e b u i l d i n g s w h i c h a r e s t a n d i n g in d a m a g e d c o n d i t i o n
w i t h c r a c k s of m i n o r to m a j o r w i d t h a n d e x t e n t . T h e y n e e d r e s t o r a t i o n of lost s t r e n g t h as w e l l as
cosmetic repairs.

E v e n w h e n t h i s is d o n e , t h e s e b u i l d i n g s will r e m a i n v u l n e r a b l e in f u t u r e

earthquakes.

OBJECT AND SCOPE


T h e s e guidelines have the following objectives;

Repair

It c o n s i s t s of actions taken for patching up superficial defects, r e - p l a s t e r i n g walls, r e p a i r i n g


doors and windows a n d services such as the following :
i)

P a t c h i n g u p of d e f e c t s a s c r a c k s a n d fall of p l a s t e r a n d r e - p l a s t e r i n g if n e e d e d .

ii)

R e p a i r i n g d o o r s , w i n d o w s a n d r e p l a c e m e n t of g l a s s p a n e s .

iii)

C h e c k i n g a n d repairing electrical connections, gas connections, plumbing,


heating, ventilation

iv)

Rebuilding non-structural walls, chimneys, boundary walls.

v)

R e l a y i n g c r a c k e d f l o o r i n g at g r o u n d level a n d r o o f i n g s h e e t s or tiles.

vi)

R e d e c o r a t i o n w o r k ( W h i t e or c o l o u r w a s h i n g etc.)

ASSESSMENT OF DAMAGE

t h e r e c o r d to a s to e s t i m a t e t h e r e q u i r e d m a t e r i a l s a n d l a b o u r for r e s t o r a t i o n a n d repair properly.
It s h o u l d a l s o b e a s s e s s e d if d u r i n g t h e p r o c e s s of r e s t o r a t i o n , s o m e of t h e s e r v i c e lines

Note :
1. The mesh should be continuous with 200mm overlap at the comer or elsehere.
2. Using galvanized binding wire, tie up the roof rafters with the nails of the eave level
belt before applying the plaster over the mesh.
3. In brick and Bela stone walls, it will be easy to drill or chisel out holes of 75 mm dia.
In that case, instead of the nails, use 3 mm galvanized mild steel wires through the
holes to hold and clamp thejongitudin'^l
