Mt. Kilauea Is The Most: Active Hawaii
Kilauea is the most active of the five volcanoes that together form the
island of Hawaii, and, perhaps, the most active volcano on Earth. It is located
on Hawaii, or the Big Island, at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Mt. Kilauea is
located along the southern shore of the island, the volcano, at 300,000 to
600,000 years old and going above sea level about 100,000 years ago. It it is
the second youngest product of the Hawaiian hotspot and the current eruptive
center of the HawaiianEmperor seamount chain. It is the youngest of the
volcanoes located on the Big Island, which include Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa.
Kilauea sits in the shadow of Mauna Loa. The most recent eruption was last
January 3, 1983.
Because of its position more than 2,000 miles from the nearest continental
landmass, the island of Hawaii is one of the most geographically isolated
landmasses on Earth.
