What is an interview?

An interview is a technique for


gathering information. It is a
structured conversation
between two people on a
particular topic.

Why Practice the interview?


you will have many opportunities to participate in an
interview. Sometimes you will be the interviewer and
interviewee
Talking with a university representative about
admission, procedures and policies for entrance to
graduate school. Law school, medical school.
Talking with a personnel officer during the application
procedure for a job, either on or off campus
Talking with a news reporter during an interview about
your country for a campus or local newspaper.

Guidelines for the interview


If you are the interviewer :
prepare a minimum of ten questions on the topic, although it is not
necessary to memorize the questions, you should be very familiar
with them. You may, however, refer to your notes during the
interview.
Begin the interview by explaining your purpose.
if you do not understand the answer to one of your questions, ask
the person to repeat it or clarify it.
try not to talk too much
let the conversation run naturally. If you think of a new question
during the interview, ask it.
take notes during the interview.
after the interview, at home, read over your notes and prepare a
summary of the interview.

If you are the interviewee :


Give complete answers to the questions
volunteer information.
pay careful attention to the interviewers
questions. If you dont understand one,
ask for clarification.
before answering a difficult question,
spend a few seconds collecting your
thoughts.
