BACKGROUND
Four other writers worked with Thomas Jefferson on the draft
of the Declaration that was presented to Congress. These other
writers made few changes, but Congress insisted on major edits.
Jefferson was upset by these changes to his document. In The
Autobiography, Jefferson marked the changes Congress made in
the Declaration of Independence. The underlined passages show
the parts left out by Congress from the original. The words added
by Congress appear in brackets.

throw off such government, and to provide new guards for their
future security. Such has been the patient sufferance of these
colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to
