Youngker High School

Dear Mr. Stillman:

I am writing to express my interest in one of the teacher positions in the mathematics department
at Youngker High School. By working with four different mathematics teachers, I have become
very familiar with the duties that are required of this position.
As you can see from my attached resume, I have a great deal of experience working in this
position during my undergraduate years at Arizona State University (ASU). During the iTeachAZ
Program, students are required to partake in internships with various school districts that have a
partnership with ASU. Students work with a mentor teacher in their assigned school placement
each semester in the program, which allows them develop the skills needed of a teacher and to
gain clinical experience through intensive student teaching experiences. Both the student and the
mentor teacher plan and deliver academic content in a variety of formats, including small group,
one-to-one, and whole class. Some of my experiences in the program include observing my
mentor teachers classroom management style, assisting with various activities to engage student
learning, and presenting mathematical concepts in various formats. In addition, the program
allowed me to understand the complexities of lesson planning while putting my lesson plan
preparation into practice during my internships. With all of the experiences I gained in my
internships, I have a better understanding of what it takes to support students needs for their
success in a mathematics classroom.
I look forward to the opportunity to discuss my qualifications in the near future. I can be reached
at 481-516-2342 or Jagar.Carrillo@asu.edu.
Respectfully,

Jagar Carrillo

Dear Parents,
My name is Mr. Carrillo and I am excited to welcome you and your child to the new school year.
More importantly, welcome to our Algebra II class. I would like to take the time to let you know
some information about myself and how I will run our classroom. I believe that every student has
the potential to succeed, and it is my responsibility to provide them with the proper tools and
skills to succeed. Teaching is not just about the content being taught but also about providing a
safe place for all who enter the classroom. With this, our classroom will be both positive and
welcoming to all. All students are encouraged to express their opinions and ideas while being
respectful of each other. Together, as a class, we will create this safe place for everyone to learn
and grow from one another.
There are lots of exciting things coming up this semester in this course, such as building upon
prior Algebra I knowledge to an in-class project that will utilize various math concepts learned
throughout the semester. With all of the exciting material that is planned for your child, I do ask
that everyone comes to class prepared to learn and work. Not only will they learn from me, but
they will also learn from each other as the activities and lessons will incorporate collaboration
between all students. Since class time is limited and there is a lot of information to cover, staying
on task and working diligently will be a key component for success.
Being a huge supporter for your childs success in this class, I have high expectations of all my
students. I am asking for your help to maintain those expectations by checking with your child
periodically to make sure that their work is being done and to encourage them to reach out to me
if they have any questions. Everyone is capable of success, but it will take hard work and
dedication on all of our parts to make this happen.
Finally, I want you to know that one of my most important goals this year is to keep the lines of
communication open with you. I am available every day to talk with you between 6:45 a.m. and
7:15 a.m. and between 2:15 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. Please do not hesitate to contact me at 481-5162342 or Jagar.Carrillo@asu.edu if you have any questions or concerns during the semester.
Again, welcome to our Algebra II class and I look forward to working with you this upcoming
semester.
Sincerely,

Mr. Carrillo

Dear Mr. & Mrs. Johnson,

This letter is to inform you that an issue has come up recently regarding your child, Joe.
Homework is extremely important for success in my classroom as it extends the concepts being
learned in class and allows students to practice their new skills.
Joe has been receiving above an 80% on the in-class quizzes, which shows that he knows the
material being taught in class, but he is not completing the out of class work that is being
assigned. Although his quiz scores are decent, his overall grade is being affected with the many
missing assignments. Over the past two weeks, Joe has only turned in two of the eight
assignments that were assigned to the class. Students are given the last 15 minutes before class
ends each day to start on their homework and ask any questions of myself or their classmates if
they need help. However, Joe has not been taking advantage of this time as he sits at his desk and
reads one of his literature books.
Being his parents, I ask for your help in talking with Joe about his homework assignments for
each day when he returns home, and to ensure that he is spending an adequate amount of time on
each assignment. If Joe needs extra time to complete his homework assignments when he is
unable to finish it at home, then he can come into my classroom before school starts, during his
lunch period, or after school to work on it and get additional help from me or another student if
he has any questions. Joe does show the potential to succeed in my classroom, so we need to
focus on helping him complete and turn in his homework.
Please contact me at 481-516-2342 or Jagar.Carrillo@asu.edu at your earliest convenience so
that we may work together to help Joe get back on track in my classroom. Thank you for your
cooperation.
Sincerely,

Mr. Carrillo
