1816: Tariff of 1816 Bank of the United

States created James Monroe elected


president. Military expansion Enlargement of West Point Military
Academy and standing army of 10,000;
enlarged navy.

1818: Treaty of 1818 establishes fixed

troops were sent to Florida by Monroe to
capture Seminole raiders, which began the
first Seminole war. During the war, the
U.S. seized most of Spain's important
military posts and overthrew the governor
of Florida. His actions angered some
British and Spanish leaders.

Missouri would enter the Union as
a slave state while Maine joined as
a free state. It also declared that
slavery was prohibited north of the

was signed, it was agreed that
Spain gave Florida to the United
States. In return the U.S. gave up
its claim on Texas and took up the
responsibility for $5 million of
U.S. citizens' claims against Spain.

1824: Russo-American Treaty of

issues Gibbons v. Ogden ruling.
Sectional differences had split the
Republican Party into factions of
North, South, and West.

1817: James Monroe takes office in the white


house, becoming the fifth president of the United
States. The governor of New York DeWitt Clinton
urged the state of New York to build a Canal with
connecting bridge from Lake Erie, to Albany, on
the Hudson River. This project was known as the
"Erie Canal".

1821: Supreme Court

1819: Panic of 1819 Spain cedes Florida to the
United States House passes Tallmadge
Amendment McCulloch v.
Maryland and Dartmouth College v. Woodward
cases. The Monroe Doctrine was issued which
states that no European power shall interfere
with U.S. and that the United States shall not
interfere with Europe either. Sections of US
were pulling apart due to westward expansion,
rise of King Cotton in south, economic
depression.
(Sectional rivalry led to Civil War after forty
years.)
