    Strategic Defense Initiative (Star Wars)- 1983


    The Strategic Defense Initiative or known as Star Wars was created based on the U.Ss fear of
    Soviet Union base on the build up of nuclear weapons and the fear of an soviet airstrike . This is
    known as Mutual Assured Destruction or MAD ,a plan to ensure U.Ss survival of Soviets attack.
    Its consisted of three phases that , a global miista ballistic defense orbiting low around Earth's
    atmosphere that launched non-nuclear interceptors that intercepts Soviet ICBM missiles from
    hitting the U.S where the other two phases where the second defense destroys ICBMs that enter
    the first layer and and ground level that destroys missiles that enter through the second layer.
    This is significant based on U.S and Soviet relations are stressed since the Soviets started making
    more nuclear weapons like the Hydrogen bomb, the atomic bombs and later the nuclear missiles
    almost lunahcign the world into nuclear war base on the Cuban Missile Crisis. This caused the U.S
    to be weary of their rival superpower and tale k precaution heightening the Cold War tensions.

    Collapse of the Soviet Union


    Since the death of Stalin, Soviet Leadership began to fluctuate where the leaderships changed
    from leader to leader until it reached Mikhail Gorbachev who decided to put reforms into the
    Soviet Union in 1985. The Reforms of perestroika and glasnost, free speech and small private
    business bloomed to help reform the Soviet Unions economy and society. However, it brought a
    change to the Soviet Union where he started to ease the armed race when he signed the
    Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty that help relieve tension with the US. But in the
    end, contributed to its downfall. Since the new reforms, nationalism of states began to rise
    within the 14 other Soviet controlled republics. Then Lithuania decided to declare its freedom
    causing Gorbachev to use violence to stop the involving 14 deaths and hundred wounded. Since
    Gorbachev's view and reforms are leading to disaster causing popularity to rose to Boris Yeltsin
    where he later was elected to become president of the Russian Federation. However, Gorbachev
    and Yeltsin weren't the only rivals, deep resentment from the old Russian regime wanted to end
    the reforms and bring back the old powerful regin and their powerhungirness and their fear of
    losing their own prower speed up their determination to usurp power from Gorbachev. On
    August 19 1991, the coup d'etat began where Gorbachev was detained in his own home where
    they demand that Gorbachev resigned his position and they went to Moscow to to usurp the
    power however, they were stopped when Yeltsin declared a speech where influenced the

    people. The old regime known as the hardliners order their men to attack the Parliament building
    but were reused caused the them to withdraw their troops. This attempt of coup d'etat failed
    causing the Soviet Union to fall as well where the 15 soviet Republic broke up from the their own
    independence. This caused Yeltsin and other leader of republic to create a reform the
    Commonwealth of Independent States where Baltic republics like Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania did
    not join with Georgia. The Soviet Union was no more. This is significant between U.S and Soviet
    Union relationship base on Soviet being more successful and their communist ways to spread
    however end base on their instability of making reforms that seem to democratic involving U.Ss
    democratic ways that cant be coexisting with one another.
