Module 1

Summary of Technology Skills

When examining the skills check list I was not surprised at the areas that I scored both
beginner and advanced in. Since middle school I have almost daily used Microsoft Word, and
Power Point has been used the second most, it being basically the only means that I had in
reference to giving presentations.
The main focus for Word this semester is to work on differentiation of formats throughout
the same document. Also focusing on how to merge mail, track changes, and the advanced
features such as creating and using styles. Word is what I have used for the last decade, and as
things have evolved and grown I have not always kept up as I should have been. Not only will
having a firm grasp on this widely used program help in my future as an educator, but it will also
help me in my current jobs that I have.
When it comes to Excel and other Spreadsheets I know how to do the basics, however
that usually ends up being a bare minimum. With my undergraduate internship I entered data into
a system. The only problem with this is the system was created before I was ever in the picture,
so I did not know how it was set up, just that it was easy to add names and other info into it. I
would like to be able to enter my own data and then turn that into a graph of some kind.
My graphic skills ended up being all over the place, I yet again know the basics and just
what I need to know in order to get the most basic jobs accomplished. I think that with a little
effort added to this field I will be able to become proficient in all of the skills from this set.
My Power Point skills are probably the best that I have, next to email. I have been
making power points, yet again, since middle school. At times I would even make personal ones
that reflected interests or hobbies just for fun. The only thing is I would like to work on graphs
that I made via a spreadsheet.
The data base and spread sheet skills that I have are closely related. Some of our records
were held in Excel and others were in Access during my internship. So I was just kind of shown
what I needed to be shown in order to have a proficient amount of work be done while I was
interning.
Finally, since my email skills are on par I will not spend too much time on them. I will
probably at least refresh myself and make sure everything is still alright with them. Since extra
practice at anything can never hurt!

Goals and Objectives for Skills Checklist

Module 1

Goal 1 (Module 2): To become proficient and fluent with Microsoft Word

Objectives:
o To become familiar with differentiation of formatting in the same document.
o To become aware of how to merge mail from word documents, databases or
spread sheets.
o To use track changes appropriately within documents.

Goal 2 (Module 3/4): To become more confident using a data base to present information

Objectives:
o Learn to enter a formula into a cell
Learn to use relative references to cells in a formula
Learn to use absolute references to cells in a formula
Learn to use functions (Sum, Average, If, etc.)
Objectives:
o Master creating charts from data in cells.
o Editing those chart components
o Work on importing charts into Word, and being able to manipulate at my will

Goal 3 (Module 5): To explore the use of graphic tools

Objectives:
o Learn how to create layers of objects and move objects to different layers
o Learn how to wrap text around graphics or be in line with the text
o Explore new and different aspects to this medium of technology use

Goal 4 (Module 6): Fully familiarize myself with the use of a database.

Objectives:
o Learn how to properly create and manipulate a database to my liking.
o Merge files from a data base into a word document or processor.
o Note the differences between data bases and spread sheets.

Schedule of Skills Boot Camp

Module 2:

Through the duration of module 2 I am planning on mastering the few things that I do not
already know about it. Just creating this document there were certain thing that I had to
look up, so I know that there is room for improvement.

Module 3/4:

For this module I plan to revisit some of the skills that I have not used in well over ten
years. In the example I like that it states of using a graph in order to show how different
classes did compared to one another, I think that that will be a good skill to have.

Module 5:

For this module I am having confusion on what kind of programs the graphic skills are
used in, so I am most interested in this one to learn just where those skills are used and
applied to.

Module 6:

The main goal for this module will be to know and master the differences between data
bases and spread sheets, and to see where they may or may not overlap. I am also
planning on being able to create and finish my own data base.

If time allows: Goal: Become Familiar with app/website Mint

Gain a better understanding of this application

Learn the functions and features of it well enough to teach to someone else.
Have an example made or to be ready for use in the classroom
