TASHI
THIS TERM WE WILL BE LOOKING AT

About the Authors and Illustrator

Anna Fienberg is the author of many
popular and award-winning books for
children of all ages. Her mother, Barbara
Fienberg, an ex-librarian, is chief plotdeviser for the Tashi books. Kim Gamble
has done splendid illustrations for many of
Anna's books, and for books by other
authors.

Before We Start - Blurb of the Book

Tashi comes from a place very far away. He escaped from a war lord and flew
to this country on the back of a swan. Hes as brave as he is clever,
and he tells the best stories ever!
Giants, ghosts, witches
Bandits, demons, monsters
Tashi is always ready for anything.

Making A Prediction
Based on the blurb, write a prediction on what type of text you think this story is,
what it is about and what the authors purpose might be. Finish these sentences:
I think this book is a (narrative/ information report /advertisement/poem)

I predict this book will be about ..

I think the author wrote this book to .. (entertain/ inform/ persuade)

Writing a Short Narrative

We have established that this book is
about Tashi and know from the blurb
that he encounters giants, ghosts,
witches, bandits, demons, and
monsters. You will have 30 minutes to
write a short story about Tashi.

What is a narrative?
A narrative is a story.
It can entertain us and teach us certain things.
Fairy tales, fables, adventure stories and
humorous stories are all narratives.

Record this definition in your book.

Authors Purpose
Authors choose language and illustrators use pictures to capture the
readers attention; they add interest to the story and keep the story
moving by using various techniques, including character development and
plot tension.

How is a narrative written?

Think of familiar stories that you know:
- Goldilocks and the 3 Bears
- Little Red Reading Hood
- The Lion King
- Snow White
What are some of the things these stories have in common?
Brainstorm together on board.

How is a narrative written?

A narrative has a beginning or Orientation.
The orientation tells us about the main
characters and where and when the story
happens.
There is a series of events in order.
There is an unexpected happening or
Problem.
A narrative has a Conclusion or Resolution.
Copy this in your books.

Protagonist
The main character, or protagonist, is the good one
in a story or novel. The one who can adapt to new
situations. Answer the question, Whose story is
this?
Record this definition in your English Book.

Antagonist
Most good stories have a character or two known as
the antagonist someone who makes life difficult
for the hero of the story.
Some of examples of antagonists from popular
stories are..
The wolf little red riding hood
Cruella devil -101 Dalmatians

Review
You can think of the protagonist as the hero and the
antagonist as the villain.
To remember which is which, remember that the
prefix pro means good, or positive, and the prefix
anti means bad, or negative.

antagonist for each.

Read Tashi and the Dragon Breath

Questions: Tashi
In Tashi the author introduces us to the characters Tashi, Jack, the War Lord and
the Dragon.
We develop our understanding of the characters through the words the author
uses and the illustrations.
Divide your page into 4 parts and draw a picture of each of these characters.
Surrounding each character write words or phrases to describe how this character
looks, feels, acts. Use words from the text, the illustrations as well as what you
have inferred in your head.

Examining Language features to build Character

Anna and Barbara Fienberg use expanded noun groups and verb groups
to describe characters appearances, behaviour and actions
Kim Gamble, who illustrates many of the Tashi books, uses these
descriptive words to draw the illustrations for the novels; these words and
pictures help build the characters
(Refer to Grammar Slides - Noun Groups and Verb Groups)

Examining Verb Groups to Build Character

Noun groups describe characters while verb groups give us more information about characters and their
behaviour
Verb groups include action verbs, thinking and feeling verbs, saying verbs and being and having verbs.
The authors use all of these types of verbs to build up the characters in Tashi. By examining their actions,
speech, thoughts and feelings, we can create a clear picture in our minds of the personality and
character of these characters.

(Refer to Grammar Slides - Noun Groups and Verb Groups)

Learning Intention
I will identify the stages of the narrative used by the authors in writing Tashi.
