Dear Parents,
I wanted to welcome your kindergartener to my class! My name is Ms. Koontz and I am
lucky to have the privilege of teaching your child this school year! I am really looking forward to
this school year. As a first grader your child will be making the transition to a full day of school.
I will try and make this transition for them as smooth as possible.
One of my goals for this year is to create a safe and fun learning environment. I have a no
bullying and no violence tolerance. If a student shows in any kind of violent or buying behavior,
they will be punished and held responsible for their action. I want to have a classroom where
every member is respected and can feel safe. I am a firm believe on letting students being
creative and expressing their individuality.
In my classroom students will be responsible for completing their work and giving it their
best effort. Driven by hard work your child will reach their full potential at everything they do. I
will be there right by their side to help them achieve that potential we both know that they are
capable of reaching.
This year will fly by and before we know it the school year will be over. Along the way I
encourage you to help your child at home and support them as much as you can. If you have any
questions about what your child is learning or anything else please feel free to contact me by
email or through the school phone number, which are located below.
Thank you very much for your time and support! I am looking forward to an amazing
year!
Sincerely,
Ms. Koontz

Classroom Rules

Classroom rules are a large aspect in the classroom. They are needed to
maintain structure and order to enhance a safe learning environment. Rules can
teach students responsibility and help keep them focused in the classroom. Rules
can create calm environments, which in return can promote positive behavior.
This will help sustain classroom procedures and make them run more smoothly.
My rules for the classroom will be very simple. They will include respecting
yourself and others including their belongings. Being responsible and making sure
work gets done. Participate in every activity, listen to directions, and giving their
best effort. When you try your best, you can achieve the best!
Respect will be applied to everyone in and outside of the classroom. That
means in order for my students to respect me, I need to respect their needs. I will
make sure that my students will respect everyone. I will explain to the students
that respect does not only apply to speaking respectfully, but to listening and acting
as well. I will encourage students to follow this rule outside of school.
Responsibility is a major rule. Students should be responsible for their
schoolwork as well as their actions. When students have a sense of responsibility
they will realize that they have to be accountable for their actions. They have to
learn that there are consequences for the action and behaviors they make. There are
both positive and negative actions for their behavior, and I will only try to
encourage them to use positive behavior.

Participation is another rule. In order for students to gain the most out of
learning, they must actively participate. Actively participating includes raising your
hand, bringing the proper materials and staying on task. Along with staying on
task, the rule of following instructions is very important as well. This rule will help
create a routine and structure in the classroom. Students will be required to listen
carefully because directions will only be said a limited amount. This rule helps
teach the students self-discipline and attentiveness.
Lastly, providing your best effort is the most important rule. This rule
reminds the students that they can achieve whatever they want and that I believe in
them. I want to make my students feel confident in themselves to they can reach
their highest potential in and outside of the classroom. This rule also encourages
organization. If the students are disorganized and lazy, then they are not showing
their peers and myself respect, therefore violating another one of our rules. If there
is any kind of severe behavior, I will resort to other actions. If it reaches to this
point, I will schedule meetings with the parents first and if it still does not continue
I will resort to the principle to help address the problem and ways to prevent any
problems from occurring in the future.

Organizing Paperwork

Organizing paperwork is one of the most important pieces of maintaining

order and professionalism in a classroom. A huge amount of paper is passed
between students and teachers throughout the entire school year. Being
unorganized can disrupt learning and decrease students respect for their teacher.
The teacher must set an example for his/ her students to teach them important life
skills, such as organization. If you are a disorganized teacher and constantly losing
your students work, it can create a level of mistrust and cause students to not care
as much for their work if they believe you as a teacher are always losing it.
My classroom will have a series of folders designated for homework, class
work and for each individual subject. Everything will be color coordinated so that
the students and myself can keep track of all the work. If you make things color
coated students will be able to easily follow instructions when asking them to place
their work in the correct spot. The homework folder will hold the current
homework for that night and will be taken home each night and returned each day.
If the students do not do their homework I will start to make their parents sign it or
send sheets home to the parents to discuss their students absentee of homework.
The class work folder will hold any incomplete work that day and will be
kept at school and finished by the end of the week. If it is not finished by Thursday
it will be taken home and done as homework.

The individual folders for each subject will contain notes, which will be
used all throughout the year. These folders will correspond with a completed work
bin where all finished homework and class work will be turned in.
Along with the folders, each student will have their own bin for each subject
containing all the completed and graded work for that subject. Keeping the subjects
separate can help the students find things easier and be more organized. When I
receive papers, I will have the completed work bin, which I will check every
evening. The turned in papers will then be graded and put in the students bins or
handed back immediately. I will make sure that when work is handed into me that I
will put away in the proper folder or bin so that I do not misplace it. Being
organized will make the classroom more efficient and keep the students better on
track.

Emotional Feeling
My goal is to manage a classroom that is safe and comfortable that also
focuses on work. I want the classroom to feel like a family in which students feel

comfortable to express themselves and truly be themselves. Starting kindergarten

or any grade at an early age can be a little scary. I want students to feel that the
classroom is a safe spot so that they can come here and feel encouraged by their
peers. It is important for students to feel comfortable in their learning environment,
so that insecurities or fear do not get in the way of their education. The students
will always encourage one another to do their best.
I will work to create this environment by reinforcing and encouraging the
rule of respect. We will start of each morning by sitting on the carpet and talking
about the day/night before. It will allow students to share with other what they did
and can always give me some insights in their life incase there is a concern or issue
a teacher should be aware of. I believe it is important to ask about their days to
create a sense of comfort within the classroom. This allows the students to really
get to know and support one and another.

Student Diversity
In most schools there will be a diverse student population. This population
will be my future classroom. I will teach students about diversity and stereotypes
to encourage acceptance. We will discuss the different cultures in our specific
classroom, such as; the foods we eat and the clothes we wear, etc. We will

10

emphasize that differences are good things. Although it is good to address the
greatness of being different, it is also important to realize the similarities between
the students. Even though we may celebrate different things and have different
color skin, we are all still equal individuals. Addressing diversity in the classroom
also helps reinforce the rule of respect. Even though we all have differences and
similarities, we all deserve equal respect. You can create assignments and projects
that portray the different types of ethnicities. Starting to break down the barriers of
judgment at a young age can have a long- term positive effect in the years to come.
Being and feeling more accepted in the classroom can lead to a decrease in
bullying and allow students to make friends easier. You can incorporate books,
lessons, and even holiday class events for the students to create a better
understanding of a equal classroom.

Sense of Community
To develop a sense of community in my classroom, I will encourage
cooperation. We will celebrate together and solve problems together. To feel like it
is a community we could get involved in the community so that students feel like
they are apart of something outside of the school. Incorporating the community in

11

lessons or even taking the students to different community events as field trips can
create a better understanding of this sense of belonging. It is important for students
to feel comfortable in their learning environment, so that insecurities or fear do not
get in the way of their education. If you allow students to explore their community
they may feel more comfortable to achieve more in the classroom. If there are no
fears or insecurities then all students will feel comfortable in participating,
therefore creating a strong sense of community. Cooperation is also very important
in a community. The students will work together to solve problems and will learn
from one another. Students will gain respect from each other from their support
and input to solve these problems.

Work Spaces
The ideal workspace will promote learning with little distractions.
Everything will have its own specific place to prevent wasting class time and
maintain an example of organization. Students will be organized into groups or

12

pods in which no ones back is to the front of the room. These groups are important
because they can be used to promote cooperation and teamwork. Although for tests
and assessments the groups would become separated. Every month or every 9
weeks, I can change the arrangement of the room around and seating assignments.
It can provide different learning styles to students allow them to make friends with
everyone then just sticking to one group all year.
The classroom would need to be quiet to avoid distractions when necessary.
I want the learning environment to be fun and positive but serious and focused
when needed. I will manage the noise level in the classroom and keep it clean even
throughout activities. I will provide materials that students may need such as
pencils, rulers, etc. Overall the workspace will be neat and organized so it is easy
to navigate through for the children, but the classroom will be vibrant and exciting
to make the students feel comfortable and happy, after all it is an elementary
classroom.

Dcor
My goal regarding classroom dcor is to promote a welcoming environment
for the students and any other visitors. Everything will be organized in a specific
place so the classroom will be easily accessible for the students. The room will

13

most likely consist of a blackboard or smart board depending on the school, a desk
area for the students and myself and a carpeted corner for books and reading. I will
also provide beanbag chairs for the reading corner so that students have a
comfortable place to relax when they get a break.
The students desks will be organized into small groups of 4 or 5. My desk
will in the front corner next to the blackboard or smart board so I can see
everything that is going on in the classroom. The back wall of the classroom will
consist of computers (if provided) for the students to complete some of their online
work in multiple subjects. The carpeted corner will be a relaxed place where
students can unwind if they have extra time after finishing their work. Next to the
entrance of the classroom will be class rules and a mini contract the students will
sign each day stating that are aware of the rules and that they will follow them. I
will decorate the classroom to be vibrant and create a learning environment that is
encouraging to the elementary student. I will plan to hang their work up around the
walls and show off how proud I am of all their hard work!
Family Involvement
Family involvement is critical in receiving a great education. Families have
close relationships with the educators and the students. They help reinforce what is
being taught in class and can be positive role models for the children. It will be

14

encouraged for the parents to read with their children each night to help them
increase their literacy skills. Families should be kept up to date with what is going
on in the school and classroom, which is why I will send home weekly newsletters
and schedules to keep the parents updated on what their child is learning. I will
make sure a long with those letters that extra worksheets will be provided so that
parents can work on extra activities to enhance their childs learning.
It is very important for families to be involved but in some cases, students
do not have a strong support system at home. These students will need extra
support at school. If students are not receiving the extra help at home, I will do my
best to give them more one-on-one time to help them achieve and stay on track.
Family involvement can either have a negative or positive effect on a childs
learning and I will make sure that they will always receive the extra help they
deserve no matter their situation.
