About the District

Prince Georges county school district holds 123,807 students and has
198 schools. (146 Elementary Schools, 25 Middle Schools, and 27 High
Schools) Prince Georges County is the nations 19th largest school districts.
With over 23,000 employees in the schools our first priority is the
educational success of our students. Our biggest accomplishment has been
nationally recognized for out groundbreaking programs in our schools;
Advanced Placement Courses, International Baccalaureate, Spanish/ French
Immersion, Creative and Performing Arts, Montessori, Military, as well as
Talented and Gifted. Through these extensive programs technology is in the
process of being upgraded. Although each program gives students their own
path to gain interest technology use in vital. PGCPS equips each school with
200 laptops that are mobile, about 5 computer labs,
Problem Overview
With amazing progress with technology use in our schools, there are
will challenges that we often face each year. Each year is a new foundation
to build upon in which we create improved pathways for our students. In
doing so, we are encountering several roadblocks with the use of technology.
Thus far, we have been providing a select range of technology for every
school with purchasing software for technical support for both staff and
students. This brings me to numerous questions concerning the use of
technology in our school district;

Are we providing proper training for our staff with proper technology
training to teach students?
Are teachers using the tools and material in a way in which students
are able to learn effectively?
How much of an academic increase have we seen thus far in the use of
technology in the classrooms?
How can we improve access to technology for less fortunate students?
How can we evolve our school district to be 80% compliance with the
use of technology from both staff and students?
How can we expand professional development in technology?
How can we assure each student that they will gain great benefit from
the pace of change in using technology?
Will we give students training prior to using materials?
Will is improving standardized test performance of students?

Vision
In using technology in the classroom we believe it should be used as a
support to your learning and not the main teaching aspect. Technology may
work and there are times that they do not work so you cannot completely
lean on technology to teach children. When it comes to the new expectations
of the Common Core the use of technology will help support the students
being able to comprehend the higher-level expectations they will need to
know before moving on into Kindergarten. When using technology it is
important to make these higher-level expectations interactive and hands on
because in early childhood that is the best way for young students to be able
to acquire such skills.
What do we need?
Barriers are preventions or restrictions of the use of technology in the
classroom. There may be four main categories of barriers: Resources,
intuitional, administrative, support, training and experience, and attitudinal
or personality factors. Jonathan Brinkerh (2006)
Resources PGCPS schools have unlimited internet access for
students, faculty, and staff to use during in / out of school hours, each
classroom has an LCD protector, Promethean Board, video camera, CD/DVD
player, and 4 desktop computers.
Institutional and Administrative - In PGCPS schools we provide a
wide range of ways to implement technology. In this instance our
administrative are given quarterly basic trainings of the functions of the
technology that we use in the school. In addition, our technology
departments are the people who host the trainings. We also have a technical
coordinator, an assistant technology coordinator, a lab facilitator, media
specialists, as well as trouble shooting coach. Each of these persons play a
key role in directing malfunctions with technology, one one one training
with students / teachers, updating software, as well as creating budgets for
newer technology.
Support Training, and Experience - In the school system we offer
an array of staff workshops and trainings in which teacher are use to assist in
growing in their professions. We call them, Talent Development Programs .

These programs are provided to help you enhance your performance and
satisfaction as an educator. In addition there are several other programs at
arm reach;
Framework for Teacher Training
Teacher Mentor Programs
Continued Professional Programs
School Leader Network Program
Although we have a variety of trainings for teachers, staff, and faculty; we
fail to follow up to see if the instruction is a benefit in our classrooms.

Attitudinal or Personal Factors We as educators find it difficult at times

when there are functions that we use in technology in which we have little to
no information. We plan our lessons to create assessments in order for
students to learn, but we often do not think about creating out own lessons
on using technology. Our day is stacked, to think about creating more lesson
plans may seem like a bit much! In additional we can great value from
continuous trainings that will allow us to keep up with the latest updates in
software, technology advances, new software , and more efficient classroom
equipment.

What Do You Think We Need? I created s short questionnaire for

school staff to fill out about what they thought we needed in out
school in order to make the use of technology simpler.
Question 1 - Can you name a few strategies that you think will help
you in your teachings with the use of technology in your classroom?
Question 2 During your trainings that you have taken, are you
completely satisfied in the end with the material delivered?
Question 3 On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate your knowledge
and skills in technology use in the classroom?
Question 4- Do you think technology has a greater impact in your
teaching style? Why or why not?
Question 5- What do you think as a school community can be done
to better assist you with your knowledge in keeping up with
technology?

Audience
The training will be for teachers, instructors, administrative personal, faculty,
substitutes teachers in the district. The technology training will be catered to
professionals looking to grow to be technology experts. Prior to the training,
each person will take a basic assessment of simple information on
technology. The assessment will not count against you, but it will give
trainers insight on where you are developmentally in the use of technology.
In the instance ways you are able choose the class you desire to begin the
training in order for you to be caught up!

Goals / Objectives
Trainees will be able to learn the following;
*Assist in improving learning for students through the use of technology
* Support tools used to help expand faculty / staff knowledge and skills to
parallel technology into their teaching material
* Provide additional resources for teachers in year- round, day-to-day training
with updates in technology
* Deliver monthly assessments, evolutions, and feedback for technology use
in the classrooms
*Approaches to extensive strategies that gives alternate learning routes for
teaching with technology.

Instructional Strategies
In the staff development there will be a lot of technological topics covered. Through these topics
there will be 4 groups based on the covered topics. Our most essential goal is to provide staff in
the training with outstanding in technology applications, tools, and instruction. The four groups
will be as followed; hands- on-hands group, video tutorial group, role play group, as well content
lecture group. The entire staff will be able to have a chance to go to each group as we rotate
during a designated time block.
For example ; Hand on- Hands Group
I would want to do to help promote good understanding on how to create SMART table
activities or import them from the SMART Exchange to help create a strong lesson. There will
be staff developments that will show teachers how to use the SMART Exchange system where
teachers have already created SMART files that can be used on both the SMART board and
SMART tables. This would be a great way to show they can create and also use pre-made to
help enhance their lessons while using the SMART table in their classroom.
I also would hold times that teachers could come and explore with iPads and also explore
applications that other teachers have tried before and come up with applications that are worth
spending money on to upload to each iPad. I would hold these types of staff meetings at least
twice a year but maybe a third one at the end of the year. This could also be used to come up
with applications themselves that they believe would be beneficial to spend the money available
for the iPads. I would also use this time to talk about replacements for the following year.
I will also continue working on getting my masters and hopes to have my degree by the
end of the next school year. Throughout this time I will also be collaborate with my fellow
classmates and learn from them what types of applications or technologies can help early
childhood. I attended a conference in Ocean City last year that showed how to integrate different

types of technologies into the classroom and I want to go to more of those types of conferences
because they show a lot of software and hardware that is coming our way.
