Separation
Jamals call to adventure began when he was a
young boy and his mother was killed and he and
his brother were brought into a new world.
The only issue in their call to adventure is that
Jamal wants to bring their friend Latika with them,
but his brother Salim wont let him.
Overall they didnt really have the choice to refuse
the call. Because of their circumstances, they
were forced to begin their adventure.
none
This story has a sort of a mentor but not the good
kind that helps the character along their journey.
Maman was a man that took the boys in, but he
didnt take care of them well, he was using them
to try and make money. They end up escaping
from him after they see him blinding a boy in
order to help his schemes.
There is no talisman for this hero

The hero in this journey is Jamal and his

companions are his brother Salim, and friend
Latika. His brother was always causing issues
especially when dealing with Maman. Latika is his
main motivation throughout the story.
The journey into the new and unfamiliar world
begins when the boys run away from Maman and
decide to support themselves.

I mentioned this character above as a guide, but

Sacred Marriage: Does
the hero have a special
emotional bond (it could
literally be a marriage)
with another character?

this character, Maman, was more of a threshold

guardian.

Jamal faces every day challenges as he is a

young child trying to provide for himself, whether
its pretending to be a tour guide at the Taj mahal
or picking pockets he did what he needed to.
As they got a little older Jamal and Salim had a
conflict where Salim was alone with Latika and
they began to argue. It reached the point where
Jamal pulled out a gun but in the end he just left
after Latika convinced him to.
In a sense, Latika was this character to Jamal. He
always cared for her growing up and she was
beautiful.
Before Jamal finds Latika, she was in preparation
to become a prostitute, but he saves her from it
Jamal had been working for a company making
calls and was able to find Salim. His journey was
to go find his brother.
The dragon again was Maman. He was
constantly the biggest issue in the boys lives. It
was at the point that Salim shot him that the
dragon was slayed
The ritual death would be that of Salim (This
doesnt happen until the end of the movie). They
had only been reunited for a short period of time
but he had been so engulfed into his life of crime
that there was no turning back and he gave his
life for the sake of his brother.

Jamal has a special emotional bond with Latika

who he is constantly trying to get back to. That is
why he went onto the TV show. He knew that she
watched it and he wanted to be reunited with her.

Atonement (at one

with) with or
Recognition by the
Father: Is the hero
reunited with his father
in some way?
Entering the Belly of
the Whale: Is there
some point in the story
where the hero must
face his deepest fear or
the darkest evil in the
story?
Apotheosis
(Deification): Is there a
point in the story where
the hero is held up as an
ideal or where the hero
is worshipped as a god?
Ultimate Boon / Magic
Elixir: Does the hero
find some special
solution to the problem
he is attempting to
resolve? This might be a
magic potion or a key to
something.
Refusal of the Return:
Does the hero initially
refuse to return to the
homeland or the place
that he began the
journey?
Magic Flight / Pursuit:
Is there some point
(generally toward the
end) where the hero is
being chased or is
otherwise trying to
escape something?
Rescue from Without:
Is there so point in the
movie, when all seems
hopeless, when it looks
like the hero is going to

Jamals father is never really brought up ever in

the story nor is there any religious connection to
God.

This is the point where Jamal realizes that he has

the power to win this game, and not as a cheater,
but as a slumdog whose past has brought him to
where he is now. He has to win the game but he is
going to do it by his own power.
He isnt seen as a god but he is praised as the
slumdog millionaire, the boy who had all the odds
against him but was still able to prevail

Jamal wasnt necessarily given some key to win,

but when he phones a friend intending to call
Salim, Latika is the one who answers the phone,
and from that point, hearing her voice was
enough and he was willing to guess the last
question of the game.
The Return
Jamal doesnt want to return to just how things
were before, he wants to win the game as he
deserves to.

When Jamal was into the game, they began to

believe that he was cheating because how could
some boy who was raised in the slums ever know
the answers to these questions?

The moment where all hope seemed to be lost

would be when Jamal believed that he was going
to be kept in custody for cheating when he wasnt
actually doing it.

die, then suddenly he is

rescued unexpectedly?
Crossing the Return
Threshold: Is there
some point where the
hero clearly returns
home?
Master of Two Worlds:
Does it appear that the
hero has conquered life
in both the familiar and
unfamiliar worlds?
Freedom to Live: Since
the hero typically begins
the journey to resolve a
problem, does it appear
the problem is at last
resolved so that all can
live freely?

This moment was when he was announced as the

winner. It was that moment of success and
knowing that he would be counted as the winner.
He has both conquered the game, and his normal
life now that he has been reunited with Latika

In the end Jamal and Latika are together and he

has won Who Wants To Be a Millionaire
because of this he now has money and is able to
live a better life
