Wilson Bohannan 1922 Catalog Release Notes

A couple of things to note:

1. Anyplace you see a skipped page number that was simply a completely blank page. This file
contains EVERYTHING!
2. There are two inserted pages at the very back of the catalog (the first WB pin tumbler locks I
have record of!).
3. The catalog is searchable, as I applied OCR during the scanning process.
4. Determination of the catalog year. Please see explanation below.
Determining year of the 1922 Wilson Bohannan Catalog
Since this catalog does not show a specific date, here is the logic I used to date this catalog
On page 65 there is an entry which reads:
Patented July 16, 1918. Other Patents Pending.
Here is that patent information:
Patent #
Filed
Issued
1272967
11/10/1917
7/16/1918

Inventor
A. Kirsch

Description
Door lock

To establish an earliest date (left bracket), I searched the US Patent Office records for all patents by
Wilson Bohannan Inc. filed after July 16, 1918, but before 1927, when the company moved away from
Brooklyn, NY. The later of the next two patents Filed dates would be the left bracket (to satisfy the
plural listing of Patents Pending). Here are the only two patents I found which satisfy this criterion:
Patent #
1451788
1456466
lock)

Filed
6/30/1921
3/3/1921

Issued
4/17/1923
5/22/1923

Inventor
M. Sheinman
W. N. Sauerbrei

Description
Door lock
Reversible Bolt Lock (door

Therefore the left bracket is 6/30/1921 (patent 1451788)

The latest date (right bracket) the catalog could have been published would be the earlier of the two
Issued dates of the Patents Pending (as they (plural) would no longer be Pending).
Therefore the right bracket is 4/17/1923 (patent 1451788)
Giving them time to make the new catalog from 6-30-1921, my best estimation is that the catalog year
is 1922 (although it could possibly fall into late 1921 or early 1923).

FOREWORD
ILSON BOHANNAN, the founder of the enterprise that bears
his name was born in 1828, in Montpelier, Vermont. When
still quite young it was recognized that he possessed a marked
ability for mathematics, also a passion for mechanics that bespoke the genius. These mental attributes awakened within
him a desire, a labor of love, that was made manifest in the continual
designing and inventing of simple mechanical locking devices.
Later, perfecting his earlier attempts, he produced various kinds of
locks that would be practical in operation; simple, still true in their
mechanism; that would stand up under the strain of continual use, and
that could be manufactured and marketed with reasonable economy.
So pronounced was his native ability in mechanics developed, that
at the age of twenty years he was invited to join a partnership, thus
creating the firm of Bohannan & Gibson, located in the City of Baltimore, Maryland. It is unnecessary to state that the sole activity of the
infant firm centered in the invention and manufacture of lock and bolt
devices of all kinds.
The following year, 1 849, the lure of nature's golden treasure-house,
California, beckoned, and like countless other young, normal Americans
of that time, the youthful members of the firm of Bohannan & Gibson,
succumbing to the ravages of "gold fever", closed the doors of their
modest shop and set off for the metropolis, from whence they departed
for the Pacific slope's gold fields, taking passage on a merchantman,
sailing the long, slow route, around the "Horn".
Shortly after arriving in the then Territory of California, the young
adventurers began prospecting, and were, as they thought, standing on
the threshold of wealth, when Mr. Gibson was taken seriously ill.
One has but to turn to the pages that the immortal Bret Harte's
lucid pen has filled with tragic and pathetic word-pictures to realize the
fact that the bonanza towns or mining camps of 1 849 offered little that
could nor would aid a man that was stricken by a serious illness. Fate
made her decision clear: If Mr. Gibson was to survive, he must go where
competent medical attention could be obtained, and that place was
home.

WILSON B O H A N N A N ,
The return from the Californian gold fields was made in a coastwise boat to the Isthmus of Panama, which wilderness was crossed with
difficulty, then by sailing vessel to the port of New York, thence to the
City of Baltimore, where, later, the partnership of Bohannan & Gibson
was dissolved.
Wilson Bohannan, with his wife and family, then came to New
York City, where he took a position in the experimental department of
a manufacturing company of world-wide reputation. Later, he resigned
to resume practice as artificer with a large lock manufacturing company.
Ambition, as restless as the tides of the seven seas, surged within
him, and prompted by a desire to own his own business, in 1 860, he
erected a small workshop in the rear of his Brooklyn home, and there,
assisted by his son, Wilson Todd Bohannan, a youth of fourteen years,
laid the cornerstone of the present corporation.
The venture was successful and enjoyed a slow, healthy growth,
until it became necessary, in 1870, to move to larger quarters at the
corner of Broadway and Kossuth Place, Brooklyn, New York, where
locksmithing was practiced on a more pretentious scale.
The plant was equipped with what was then recognized as modern
machinery: Lathes were driven by foot; stamping and drilling machines operated by the same power, and at that time the building was
heated in cold weather by the somewhat now obsolete method of placing
large, old-fashioned stoves in the center of the several floors. After
a lapse of three years steam was installed in the Kossuth Place plant
for the double purpose of obtaining motive power and heat.
In 1888 it was found necessary to erect, on Lexington Avenue,
Brooklyn, the first unit of the present group of buildings that are now
occupied by Wilson Bohannan, Inc. The original building contained approximately 1 0,000 square feet of manufacturing space, and was four
stories high.
Subsequently, as the growth of the business demanded, new units
were added to the original building, until to-day, we boast of a pretentious plant, including a large brass foundry, equipped with every
modern device, machine or tool that ingenuity has contrived or that
trained mechanical engineers have evolved for use in the manufacture
of lock or bolt mechanisms.
On February 22, 1896, at the age of sixty-eight, the scepter of
life slipped from the toil-hardened hands of Wilson Bohannan who left
his ample estate and business to his family that its newer generations
might follow in the path he had blazed.
In 1901 the business was incorporated, the stock being allotted to
his heirs, who, controlling the management of the new corporation, took
upon themselves anew, the task of continuing the sterling standards of
practice and code of ethics maintained by Wilson Bohannan, the founder

WILSON B O H A N N A N , Inc.
of the business. That success, in no small measure, has crowned the
efforts of the present management, is evidenced by the fact that the
lock market is demanding more of our products every year.
Our
wares can be found in the shadow of the Pyramids; in use in the Andes
Mountains of South America; in demand in the Islands of the Pacific
Ocean and in the Orient. Europe has long known their utility; Africa
recognizes their worth.
New purchasers come in abundance; old friends in the States, some
of them on our books for the past forty years, continually repeating their
orders, until, to-day, we are satisfying a world-wide demand for our
products. All of which recalls to mind that:
"If a man write a better book, preach a better sermon,
or make a better mouse-trap than his neighbor, though
he build his house in the woods the world will make a
beaten path to his door."

General Information
The system set f o r t h in the following paragraphs has been formulated for
the guidance of our customers when ordering locks, latches or keys.
If
followed, it will eliminate the possibility of error or misunderstanding.

In ordering please state whether the locks are to be keyed differently, alike or master-keyed, also how many keys are desired with
each lock. Unless otherwise instructed, locks will be furnished keyed
differently, with two keys for each lock. This ruling applies to all our
locks with the exception of the pin cylinder types, which are furnished
with three keys.
Locks keyed alike are referred to as locks that "pass", i. e., any
one key of a set opening all of the locks.
Locks master-keyed are referred to as master-keyed locks. Masterkeyed locks are all keyed differently, no one key to a lock opening
another, but with a master-key operating all the locks.
(See list on
pageo XXII and XXIII for master-keying.)
Locks keyed alike, or to "pass", can be furnished with one or
more keys, and without keys when record has been kept of the key
combination.
Locks keyed differently or master-keyed can be furnished with
one or more keys with each lock.
Padlocks can be keyed alike to customer's special key when key
is suitable to locks of our manufacture. Records are carefully kept
of locks and keys adapted to special purposes when the same type of
lock and key combinations may be required for future orders. This
eliminates the necessity of sending new specifications, locks or keys
with each order, and minimizes the possibility of making mistakes.

of their cases, allowing water, which may enter at the top of the lock, to pass
out. This small hole is referred to as a "drip-hole".
This improvement prevents
water remaining in the lock and freezing, and allows the lock to operate freely
in all climates.

WILSON B O H / V N N A N ,
INCE time began, there have been those among us who coveted
and attempted possession of their neighbor's property or wealth.
The desire to, and the act of, taking being prompted by many
motives. Man's desire to protect his possessions, whether great
or small, gave birth to the first crude locking devices, and
these rough mechanisms, possessing the primary principles of the modern lock, have passed through centuries of refining evolution, until today, Wilson Bohannan, Inc., has produced a lock that is the last word
in a locking device that cannot be opened save by its own key.
The No. 25 Jimmy Proof Lock is the result of careful research and
experiment in our laboratories on the part of mechanical engineers,
who, following the orthodox principles of the mathematics of mechanics
have evolved a lock that is absolutely proof against a burglar's entrance;
against the leverage of a jimmy; against the sneak-thief; against a
lock-pick.
It has a thousand uses: Strong enough to protect great, heavy
doors; delicate enough in design and construction to guard the entrance
of the apartment dweller's domicile. It is so constructed that when
once locked it unites the door and door-jamb in a unit of great strength,
making it impossible to p_ry the door up or down, back or forward,
away from its locked position.
This lock, tested in an engineering laboratory registered a resisting strength of 6,000 pounds leverage. This test shows conclusively
that no human, agency unless aided by a mechanically operated leverage
could break the bolt of this lock and thus gain entrance to whatever
it protected.

Figure 2

Figure 2. The above illustration shows the door securely locked
after bolt and knobs have completely interlocked. To unlock the door requires
but the turn of the key on the outside or knob on the inside, which moves the
bolt up, raising it from behind the knob-heads. The lower section of each entrance
in the bolt-face is enlarged, p e r m i t t i n g the bolt, when raised, to swing, with the
door, away f r o m the knob-heads when the mechanism is disengaged.
Attention
is directed to the white line sketched on the bolt-face, in line with the jamb and
door edge.
This illustrates, in phantom, a special device on the cap of the
casing.
It projects behind the bolt setting into a cutout on the nosing. This
device prevents the door being forced up or down, adding to the strength of the
unity of the door and jamb.

of lock showing Unit Paracentric
Cylinder. The cylinder is firmly attached to the lock by means of two
Bessemer steel rods or projections
marked "A",
and two special,
pointed machine screws, marked
"B". Adjustment of the lock to
doors of any thickness from 1J/4 to
2J/2 inches is made by unscrewing
the machine screws so that the
pointed ends are above the notches
in the rods, and then moving the
cylinder in or out as the thickness
of the door may require.
After
measuring back from the edge of
the door 2% inches and boring a
IJ/2 inch hole, the lock and the
cylinder may be applied to the door
in one unit by inserting the cylinder
in the hole from the inside of the door, the cylinder
showing flush with the outside. The rim of the hole
drilled in the door to admit cylinder is covered with
a heavy bronze ring attached to the face of the door.
In addition to the phantom view of the nosing,
attention is again called to the special device on the cap of the case which projects behind the bolt,
setting into a cutout in the nosing. This adds f u r t h e r protection against the door being forced up
or down.

Figure 1 shows simplified method of applying this lock to doors. Two connecting
screws pass from the face of the lock through lock and door, screwing into
the lugs of the cylinder. These two connecting screws, including two 1^4
inch wood screws fasten the lock to the door in a secure and durable position.
In applying the lock it is only necessary to measure back 2% inches from
the edge of the door and bore a IJ4 inch hole.
Place cylinder and lock
in their relative positions and fasten together with connecting screws.
This
method of application eliminates the use of back-plate.

Note the CONNECTING SCREWS

which pass from the face of the lock
through the case and door and screw
into the lugs of the CYLINDER.
This improved method eliminates the
hack-plate and joins the lock and cylinder together in one unit.

To apply this lock to any door requires but to measure back from the edge
of the door 254" bore a 1^4" hole, apply the lock to the inside of the door,
the cylinder to the outside and fasten together by means of the connecting
screws. The job is finished by inserting the two wood screws in the fore-end.
