    The Grand Rapids Police Department released information about a robbery and police pursuit that resulted in two deaths. Two suspects robbed a victim of cash and his vehicle. Police pursued the stolen vehicle, which crashed into a tree. The driver, Phillip Patterson, was pinned in the vehicle and later died of multiple blunt force injuries. The passenger, James Bartee, was seriously injured and later died of cranial cerebral trauma. Toxicology reports are still pending for Bartee.

    ROBBERY /POLICE PURSUIT UPDATE ON VEHICLE OCCUPANTS

    On August 14, 2010, Grand Rapids Police responded to the 600 block of High St. SW on the
    report of a robbery. The victim told officers that two male suspects approached him as he
    exited his vehicle. The two suspects robbed the victim of cash and his vehicle and fled.

    The stolen vehicle was observed shortly after the robbery in the area of Hall St. and Caulfield
    Ave. SW. The vehicle, occupied by two males, fled northbound on Caulfield Ave. and struck a
    large tree at B Street. The driver of the vehicle, Phillip Patterson, male, 11/21/1993, was
    pinned in the vehicle. The passenger, James Bartee, male, 8/4/1993, was also seriously
    injured in the crash.

    Both Patterson and Bartee were transported to Saint Mary’s Hospital for treatment.

    Phillip Patterson was pronounced deceased on August 20, 2010. A subsequent autopsy
    indicated that he died from multiple blunt force injuries.

    James Bartee was pronounced deceased on August 18, 2010. An autopsy indicated that
    Bartee died from cranial cerebral trauma. Toxicology reports are still pending.
