maize plantings, the latter expected to be confirmed by the first official survey at the end of
March.
In the EU, significant reductions in barley and rye plantings will reduce the total grains area,
with some further switch to oilseed rape and other crops.
However, a significant upturn is foreseen in South America’s grain plantings for 2010/11,
especially in Argentina, where both wheat and maize areas are likely to expand. At this early
stage, world grain yields are projected to fall just short of the past year’s high level, with
total grains production forecast to fall by only 12 million tons, or 0.7 percent, to 1774 million
tons. After taking account of this year’s increased carryover, global supplies of grains in
2010/11 are projected to rise to 2158 million tons.
A preliminary examination of supply and demand prospects for wheat in 2010/11 suggests that
production, while expected to fall to 658 million tons, will still cover global consumption,
projected to grow by 12 million tons, to 656 million. Closing stocks should therefore be
maintained at ample levels. Consumption trends are difficult to project, especially in the
feed sector, but current forecasts are for growth in all sectors. Some 70 percent of total
consumption is for direct food use, expected to see further growth of 0.8 percent, to 456
million, although the rate appears to be slowing as consumption has peaked in several
developing countries. Feed use of wheat, assuming it will again be priced competitively,

is forecast to rise by five percent, to 108 million tons, while industrial use of wheat, an
increasing portion of which is used for ethanol, is expected to climb by 10 percent, to 22
million tons.
World trade in wheat (including durum wheat and wheat flour) in 2010/11 is projected to be
similar to the current year’s estimated level of 121 million tons. This assumes some reduction
in buying in Near East Asia, broadly balanced by increased purchases in North Africa.

WHEAT
PRODUCTION
The world wheat production estimate is unchanged at 675 million tons, second
only to last year’s record of 686 million. In the southern hemisphere, the
estimates for Argentina and Australia are the same as before, at 8.0 million
tons (8.4m.) and 21.7 million (20.9m.), respectively.
CONSUMPTION
World wheat consumption is forecast to increase by 0.7 percent in 2009/10,
to 644 million tons. A reduction in global feed use will be more than offset
by growth in food and industrial uses. A reassessment of starch and ethanol
uses lifts the projection of industrial use by 2.0 million tons from last month,
to 20.2 million (18.4m.), including 12.6 million (12.5m.) for starch, 6.9
million (5.1m.) for ethanol and 0.7 million (0.7m.) for brewing. Global feed
use is placed marginally higher than before, at 102.9 million tons (105.0m.).
However direct consumption for human food is lowered by 0.9 million tons, to
451.9 million (446.1m.).
STOCKS
Global stocks of wheat are forecast to rise by 31 million tons at the end of
2009/10, to an eight-year high of 197 million. Much of the increase is in the
five majors, whose combined inventories are forecast to expand by 8.8 million
tons, to 54.8m., including the US carryover at a 22-year high of 27.2 million
tons (17.9m.). Stocks in the CIS are expected to reach 21.9 million tons
(19.1m.), their highest since the mid-1990s. Those in Russia are projected at
12.1 million tons (10.0m.), including government-held stocks of eight million.
Following bumper harvests, the carryovers in China and India are forecast to
rise sharply. Those in China are expected to reach 56.4 million tons (44.5m.),
the most since the end of 2001/02, while end-season stocks in India are placed
at 18.3 million (13.1m.), the highest in seven years.

MAIZE
PRODUCTION
Following a further improvement in the southern hemisphere crop outlook, the
world maize production estimate is increased by two million tons, to a record
800 million (794m.). Based on updated survey information, the official US crop
estimate is trimmed by 0.6 million tons, to 333.5 million, still the largest ever
and nine percent higher than in 2008.
Due to improved yield prospects, the forecast for Argentina is raised by a
further 1.5 million tons, to 20.5 million, 37 percent higher than the previous
year’s poor outturn. Rains slowed harvest progress, which is trailing behind
last year’s. Rainy weather also delayed harvesting of the main crop in Brazil,
with total output forecast unchanged from before, at 51.4 million tons
(51.0m.). In South Africa, where harvesting is due to commence shortly, the
crop benefited from mostly favourable weather and the production forecast is
raised by 0.4 million tons, to 12.9 million (12.1m.).
CONSUMPTION
Global maize consumption is forecast to rise by 28 million tons, to a record
808 million in 2009/10. Feed use is forecast at 479 million tons, broadly
unchanged from a month ago, but seven million higher than last year. Growth
in meat demand remains patchy, with reduced disposable incomes limiting
consumption in countries most affected by the economic downturn. Feed use
is expected to rise in parts of Far East Asia, South America and in the US but
to decline in parts of Europe and the CIS. Industrial use continues to grow
strongly, with total consumption forecast at 206 million tons, up 19 million
from 2008/09 and equivalent to 25 percent of total use. Due to the sluggish
world economy, growth in maize-based starch output is expected to remain
below average. However, ethanol use of maize is set to rise by 16 percent, to
128 million tons (110m.), including 109 million (93m.) in the US.
STOCKS
Due to relatively strong growth in demand, world stocks at the end of 2009/10
(respective marketing years) are forecast at 142 million tons, down six percent
from last year, the first year-on-year decline since 2006/07. However, a
revised US carryover figure lifts the forecast by two million tons from a month
Commodities Data
ago; due to a lower export forecast, US ending stocks are now placed at a
four-year high of 45.7 million tons (42.5m.). Reflecting a smaller crop and
rising domestic consumption, China’s stocks are nominally forecast to fall to
53.4 million tons (59.7m.).

BARLEY
PRODUCTION
World barley production in 2009 is estimated at 147.9 million tons, four
percent below the previous year. Smaller crops were harvested in the EU,
Russia, Ukraine, Canada and Argentina, only partly offset by larger outturns in
Near East Asia and North Africa.
CONSUMPTION
The Council’s forecast of world barley consumption is lowered by almost two
million tons, to 142 million, down one percent from the previous year. The
adjustment mainly reflects lower than anticipated feed and malting use in
Europe. Total feed use is forecast at 97 million tons (99m.), with the decline
attributable to good pasture conditions in Near East Asia and reduced animal
numbers in the US and Canada. The forecast for the EU is lowered by 0.5
million tons, to 41.0 million (41.9m.), due to lower than expected on-farm
feeding. Because of weaker malt demand in the EU, Russia and parts of Africa,
the estimate for malting and other industrial uses is reduced by almost 1
million tons, to 27 million (28m.).
STOCKS
World closing stocks of barley are forecast to increase to 39.4 million tons
at the end of 2009/10 (respective marketing years), up 1.2 million from last
month and 5.6 million higher than last year. A large 2008 world crop boosted
carry-in stocks, with weaker feed and malting demand lifting the total by
almost 70 percent from 2007/08. A particularly steep rise is expected in the
EU, where the carryover is forecast 1.2 million tons higher than before, at
17.1 million (11.3m.).

SORGHUM
World sorghum production is forecast at 62.1 million tons (64.4m.), 0.7 million
higher than previously, following upward revisions for Argentina and India. The
year-on-year decline of four percent is mostly due to heavy falls in output in
the US and India.
Global sorghum consumption in 2009/10 is forecast to decline to 62.7 million
tons (65.3m.); this is 0.6 million higher than last month due to improved
prospects in Argentina and India. Food use is placed 0.4 million tons higher
than before, at 28.8 million (29.5m.), but feed use is near-unchanged, at
25.7 million (27.1m.). While raised marginally, carryover stocks at the end
of 2009/10, at 3.0 million tons, are nevertheless expected to show a decline
of almost 17 percent, the fifth consecutive annual reduction. Global trade is
forecast to fall to 5.9 million tons (6.3m.), as larger imports by Mexico, the
world’s biggest buyer, are outweighed by smaller shipments to a number of
other markets, including Chile and the EU. Because of their very slow pace to
date, the EU has extended the closing date for third-country “abatimiento”
(reduced tariff) imports of sorghum into Spain to 27 May.

SOYBEANS
The outlook for South American soybean crops remains very favourable with
producers expected to harvest record crops. The official 2009/10 crop forecast
for Brazil was lifted for a fifth consecutive month, to an all-time high of 67.5
million tons (57.2m.). In Argentina, official and private sector projections
point to a record crop of at least 52 million tons, a substantial improvement
on last season’s drought affected outturn, underpinned by larger sowings.
The forecast of world soybean trade in 2009/10 is unchanged from previously,
at a record 79.9 million tons (76.9m.). China, by far the largest buyer,
purchased heavily from the US in the first half of the current marketing
year. This was prompted by attractive crush margins and worries about
potential crop problems in South America following last year’s disappointing
outcomes. By March 2010, US export sales to China totalled 21.7 million tons,
up 32 percent from one year earlier. Although trade reports suggest some
cancellations are likely, owing to exceptional crop prospects in the southern
hemisphere, imports from the US will likely still reach a record. Together with
significant purchases from Argentina and Brazil, total 2009/10 imports are
forecast at 42.0 million tons (40.8m.).
Elsewhere, deliveries to the EU are expected to be little changed, at 12.5
million tons, due to ample supplies of alternative feed ingredients.
Although slowing markedly as buyer interest shifted to South America,
cumulative US export sales reached 36.0 million tons by 11 March, up one-
quarter year-on-year and equivalent to 93 percent of the 2009/10 forecast.
Raised for the seventh consecutive month in March, September/August exports
are officially projected at a record 38.6 million tons (34.9m.). Despite a big
outturn, shipments by Brazil (October/September basis) are expected to
decline from last year’s exceptional total, on increased competition from
other origins. However, at 25.5 million tons (30.0m), they will be above the
five-year average. Projected exports by Argentina are cut but, at 7.4 million
tons, will be around 2.0 millionhigher than in 2008/09. February exports by
Commodities Data
Paraguay totalled 751,600 tons, double the prior five-year average. A much
larger crop should enable shipments in 2009/10 to double, to a record 4.4
million tons.

SOYMEAL
The projection of global soymeal trade in 2009/10 is cut slightly but, at 54.7
million tons, is up six percent from last year. Large grain and oilseed outturns
resulted in a heavy fall in EU soymeal imports in 2008/09, but recent exporter
data indicate that shipments to that market will be higher this year.
However, carryover stocks of alternative feed ingredients remain ample, and
this will restrict the overall increase in 2009/10 imports to 22.9 million tons
(21.8m.). Growing feed demand will support larger deliveries to markets in Far
East Asia, forecast at a record 14.9 million tons (14.3m.).
The official projection of US soymeal exports in 2009/10 was lifted again, to
9.3 million tons, eclipsing the previous record by 0.9 million tons and was
up 20 percent from the previous year. Cumulative export sales in 2009/10
reached 7.6 million tons by March 2010, the two-thirds increase over the
comparable 2008/09 total was driven by strong demand from the EU and Far
East Asia, especially Indonesia, the Philippines and South Korea. Increased
buying interest from those markets should also underpin a recovery in
shipments by Argentina, the world’s leading supplier, to 25.2 million tons
(22.3m.), compensating for a fall in exports by Brazil and India.

RAPESEED/CANOLA
Boosted by record crops in the EU and China, more than offsetting a smaller
outturn in Canada, global production of rapeseed/canola in 2009/10 is forecast
at a record 59.6 million tons, up two percent on previous year. The figure is
raised slightly from before, following an increased official crop estimate for
China, now placed at an all-time high of 13.7 million tons (12.1m.). Looking
further ahead, prospects for 2010 crops in the EU and the CIS are generally
favourable, with significant increases in plantings, but production in Canada is
officially seen declining by two percent, to 11.6 million tons.
The forecast of world rapeseed/canola trade in 2009/10 is unchanged at
9.8 million tons, some 13 percent below last year’s record. The heavy fall is
attributed to reduced shipments to the EU and Far East Asia, only partly offset
by higher imports by other countries, including Mexico and Pakistan. In the EU,
a record outturn has reduced imports, expected to decline by 19 percent, to
2.2 million tons. Ample domestic availabilities will also result in a steep fall in
China’s imports, to just 1.3 million tons, less than half their level in 2008/09.
This is reflected in the expected contraction in Canada’s exports in 2009/10,
to 6.2 million tons (7.3m.), despite the likelihood of larger deliveries to other
markets, including the EU.
Canada’s trade data show that October-January shipments to the EU amounted
to 95,500 tons compared with a five-year average of just 3000 tons, attributed
to the approval of imports of a GM variety of canola. Rapeseed exports by
Ukraine are forecast to decline by about 30 percent, to 1.5 million tons, while
canola shipments by Australia, at 1.1 million tons will be unchanged from
2008/9.
