Pathophysiology: Scabies

Risk Factors:
Institutions, Overcrowding, Poverty, Poor hygiene, Sexual contact, Skin contact, Clothing,
Bedding, Towels, Furniture

Mite infestation: Sarcoptes scabiei

Female mite burrows into skin to lay eggs Papules Vesicles or Pustules
(Life cycle of female mite is 30 days) may form

Female mite lays 10 to 25 eggs

Dies after laying eggs


(Mites can live up to 3 days without a human host)

Eggs hatch within 3-4 days

Scabies larvae mature into adults in 14-17 days

Severe itch at incubation


(Immune reaction to feces) Scabies

Transmission with any skin contact:


• Prolonged skin contact
• Hospitals and nursing homes
• Day cares
• Household contact
• Sexual contact
• Shared clothing or bedding
