Grout Mix

This document provides grout mix designs and procedures for instrumentation monitoring works including inclinometers, vibrating wire piezometers, and magnetic extensometers. It outlines two grout mix designs using Portland cement, water, and bentonite in different ratios depending on soil hardness. The procedure specifies initially mixing cement and water, then adding bentonite while adjusting consistency to a heavy cream texture for pumping. The amount of bentonite added will depend on site conditions.

Grout Mix Design for

Inclinometers, VW & Pneumatic Piezometers
Magnetic Extensometers
1. Introduction
The following grout mix design will be used for the grouting of the space
between borehole wall and instruments casings, and sealing of borehole.

Grout Mix For Hard and Medium Soils

Materials Weight (US Units) Ratio by Weight
Portland Cement 94 lb (1 bag) 1
Water 30 gallons 2.5
Bentonite 25 lbs (as needed) 0.3

Grout Mix For Hard and Medium Soils

Materials Weight (US Units) Ratio by Weight
Portland Cement 94 lb (1 bag) 1
Water 75 gallons 6.6
Bentonite 39 lbs (as needed) 0.4

2. Procedure of Mixing
1) The mixes above will be used a starting standard grout mix. Cement and water
will be mixed first, and then it will be mix with the bentonite.
2) The amount of bentonite will be adjusted little bit to produce a grout with the
consistency of heavy cream. If the grout is too thin, the solids and the water will
separate. If the grout is too thick, it will be difficult to pump.
3) There will be no particular amount of bentonite that must be added, it will be
depend on site conditions.
Note: Both of these mixes have been successfully used for installations of
piezometers, inclinometers and magnetic extensometer.
