Graphene is a single layer of graphite made solely of carbon atoms. It is extremely strong, with a tensile strength 200 times that of steel. Graphene has potential uses in electronics due to its low resistance and semiconducting properties, however its conductivity can vary depending on the edge configuration of the graphene layer. Research is focused on controlling the edge alignment to overcome this obstacle and enable mass production of graphene for use in electronics and gas detection devices.

Graphene is a material made solely of carbon.
Another item that is formed soely of carbon is Key facts graphite. Graphite forms in layers, and graphene is simply a single layer of graphite. Graphene Graphene has very low resistance, giving it the ti- Intrinsic Strength 130GPa tle Semiconductor. This gives it great potential uses Youngs Modulus 0.5 TPa in the electronics industry. However, this property is Breaking Stress 42 Nm-1 not stable, and can vary with the edge conguration. Conductivity Semiconductor Graphene is amazingly strong; \One of the Width 0.335 nm strongest materials ever tests". It has an intrinsic strength 200 times that of steel.
Graphene can be used in gas detection because its re-
sistance changes when a molecule is adsorbed onto it. By passing a current through the sample, and mesur- ing the potential dierence, we can observe when a gas comes into contact with the sample. This method has currently been studied in detail using NH3 , CO2 , N2 , O2 , NO2 , NO and CO. However, only NH3 has been shown to have an eect on armchair edged Graphene Nano Ribbons (GNRs). Due to the lack of sucess in transfering the theory into reality, it may be a long time be- fore we see Graphene Nano Ribbon gas detec- tors. However, they oer the opertunity to cre- ate extreamly cheap detectors that could help pre- vent fatal situations, such as a buildup of carbon monoxide that goes unnoticed, or somthing similar. Graphene has two dierent ways to align it's
edges. It can either align them in \ZigZag" form or \Arm Chair". This in
uences the conductivity of the sample massivly. Due to the tiny size of the particles involved, it looks to be incredibly hard to control the alignment of the edges, and indeed, this is the main obstacle preventing the mass manufac- ture of graphene for use in electronics and related works. However, it also happens to be the area of graphene that is getting most reaserch. Hopefully, the challenge will be overcome one day, and graphene will be used in all kinds of devices, truly fulling its prophercy of being \The material of the future".
