4) How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation

stages?

As my role within the group was the cameraman, it was vital for me to make sure that the
footage I filmed was accurate and of good quality. If it wasn’t it would not have looked very
professional. To make sure it was of the best quality possible, I had to familiarize myself with a
number of different types of media equipment. The most important of all bits of equipment
that I handled and had to learn how to use was the ‘PD170’ which is a very expensive high
quality cameraman. I used the camera for all of the interviews. Before I went out and filmed the
interviews I practiced my framing of the interviews on other members of my team. The reason
for this was so that when I went into do an interview I could set the camera up promptly, plus
the other equipment and not waste the interviewees’ time. Putting the camera on the tripod
wasn’t a problem as I was the cameraman last year and also putting the tape in the camera was
easy to do.

This year I had to work with and set up media equipment that I had never before had worked
with. This included a tie-clip microphone, headphones, and a VX cable which linked the
microphone and camera together. As we were creating a documentary, all of this equipment
was of absolute paramount importance in the construction stage of making the documentary.
Again I had to get set up and practice how to use it and also test it each time before I went to
an interview to make sure it worked properly.

A lot of research was needed to be put into this documentary

because I wanted to make it was accurate and professional as
possible and make it believable to the audience. The way I did
this was by analyzing a couple of documentaries and also just
watching through different types of documentaries to see
how many cutaways they were using and different angles of
shots etc. The sort of documentaries I was watching was on
Sky one, BBC3 and E4 as
this was our target audience as well. Looking on the internet
on sites such as Google and YouTube. A big help was
researching and watching sort videos from YouTube about
the rule of thirds as this helped me film accurately.

As a group we used a very useful website called

www.blogger.com, this was a good free website, as I put all
my research on it alongside the others. The types of things
that went on our blog were, Location Pictures, Weekly
Updates, and Proposal etc. The group blog where we stored all our information is called
www.groupblogpws.blogspot.com I also created a personal blog and this is where I uploaded
my newspaper advertisement, radio trailer and group role. Most of Blogger is very straight
forward to use, however parts are a little more difficult and I would have to play around for
some time learning how to upload certain files such as my radio trailer. This was because I need
to get the html code and then get it on to blogger. After a while I started getting use to how to
upload these types of files. I found images for the blog were straightforward to upload. Another
website found useful was Scribd. This is a website where you can upload your work from
Microsoft Word easily and then embed this on to the blog. I will also be using this website to
upload my evaluation from word.

My weakest point was trying to use an Apple Mac Pro, as they

have totally different software to Microsoft I found it very
hard to use. I had to learn in my own time as well as lesson
time how to use the Mac. Simple things such as print screen I
found difficult, but as time went on I gained more knowledge
of the Mac computer.

I also used SoundCloud and Final Cut Pro to create my Radio

Trailer, then once created I uploaded it to my blog. I used
SoundCloud to upload my background music for my Radio
Trailer. Final Cut Pro important computer software used by the
editor to edit the whole of the documentary; I only had to use it
to create my Radio Trailer. Even though I used it last year, I still
forgot how to do some
things, so I asked the editor to show me how to do a few
things and also played around with it myself. Once I
uploaded my music I used the software Final Cut Pro to
upload my voice over and background music on to the
timeline. Then I extracted two interviews from the
documentary and used what they said as part of my radio
trailer. It took some time to go through the interviews but I
needed to pick the best parts for the trailer. Once I had everything on the timeline I put it in
sequence to create the radio trailer. This took some time to do as I wanted everything to go
together properly and sound good.

I found the internet an extremely useful source when it came to finding and contacting possible
interviews. This was because I could go on to search engines such as Google and find people
who we needed for our documentary. I would either get the contact telephone number or I
would send them an email asking if they would be in the documentary. One person I contacted
by email was Iain Fielding, who replied to my email rapidly.

The other thing I had to take into consideration when filming was the planning of the shots.
Even though the director would tell me what he wanted I needed to make sure that I caught
the shot accurately and properly and also that the Mise-en-scene was correct.

Once I filmed a couple of interviews I started to gain great confidence with filming the other
interviews and all the cutaways. Also by following the rule of thirds throughout each interview
made me get the correct framing. Sound was also important when doing the interview and I
had to make sure that the people were clear and coherent throughout their interview.

I found all the new technologies of great help in the construction and research, planning and
evaluation stages of creating our documentary. I have gained so much more knowledge and
confidence about how to use these technologies. Learning these new skills has been useful
whilst creating this documentary and will be useful for the future.
