VC - control
VA - area
VN ± network

V protocol for wired asynchronous serial
communication

V Jhis bus system was developed by Robert Bosch
in the 1980s.

V Jhe CAN protocol was internationally

standardized in 1993 (as ISO 11898-1)
V It was developed for automotive application
keeping in mind the electromagnetic noisy
environment it operates in .

V CAN protocol more than 17 years

V Jo connect a large number of controllers each
working relatively independent (distributive
control ) and don¶t require continuous data link

V If required data transmission is with in

1Mbit/sec (and 40m in length)

V High reliability and error proofing

V Jo reduce cost

R

V Ryclic Redundancy Rheck (RRR The RRR is calculated
over the non-stuffed bit stream starting with the SOF and
ending with the Data field by the transmitting node The RRR
is calculated again of the de stuffed bit stream by the
receiving node A comparison of the received RRR and the
calculated RRR is made by the receiver In case of mismatch the
erroneous data frame is discarded . Instead of sending an
acknowledge signal an error frame is sent.

R

V - Monitoring (transmitters compare the bit
levels to be transmitted with the bit levels
detected on the bus)
V - Cyclic Redundancy Check
V - Bit Stuffing
V - Message Frame Check

V One undetected error every 1000 years

R

V £ower cost at vehicle construction
V Increased flexibility and reusability of design
V Reduces time to market
V Facilitates drive by wire which reduces cost
