    A Scientist: “I Am the Enemy” by Ron Karpati espouses the use of animal

    testing in medical research. There is a controversy between medical scientist and

    animal rights activists on the basis of animal testing. Animal rights activist accuse

    medical scientist of animal fraud and miss treatment of animals. Karpati defends

    himself and medical research with the argument that animal testing is a very

    important part of medical research.

    Karpati, a pediatrician and medical scientist chose his career wanting to help

    children. In his career he experienced many deaths of children to diseases. From

    these experiences he realized that with the help of medications and further

    developments in medical science deaths of children can be avoided. So he devoted

    his life into medical research in order to better the heath. In order to practice

    medical research scientist have to include the practice of using animals as test

    subjects. According to Karpati with this practice they are able to find out new

    surgical techniques, which medications work, study DNA, etc.

    Animal rights activists on the other hand believe that they are just miss

    treating animal for their own career development. They use sad posters of dyeing

    animals in order to win over the public on the behalf of ending animal testing.

    Activists believe there are alternate ways of study and they came up with the use of

    computer simulations. That there is no need to harm animals and simulations

    should be efficient enough.


    Karpati then argues that computers are not enough for testing because

    medical science is not as well understood. He states that the need of test subjects is

    a must in medical research. The only alternate test subjects are humans, in which

    multiple human beings will die in failed experiments. Karpati also talks about how a

    restriction animal testing will severely cripple medical science; the effects of it

    won’t be felt for years. That medication for certain diseases won’t be created,

    certain illness won’t be able to cure, and the number of death will continue.

    Kaparti defends the practice of animal testing and uses his experiences as a

    pediatrician to back up that they are doing this for more important reasons. He

    seems to understand where the activists are coming from but realizes there is no

    alternate way. So he defends animal testing in medical research.
