    Movement 1 in F major

    Structure: Ritornello form (this means a repeating theme which keeps


    coming back)
    *Harpsichord throughout
    *Tempo/Speed: Allegro
    *Modulates to C major (dominant) halfway through the piece until the end

    Instruments:
    Violin, oboe, flute, trumpet, cello, bass and bassoon
    (flute part was intended for a recorder)
    The word Violone means bass NOT violin

    Harmony: lots of trills and fast notes, typical broken chord


    accompaniment.
    Texture: fast moving texture, instruments weaving in and out.

    2nd Movement in D minor

    *The 2nd movement is traditionally SLOW


    *It is in D minor – The RELATIVE minor of F major
    * Starts with violin solo, then recorder takes over
    *Tempo/speed: ANDANTE (walking speed)
    *Modulates to the dominant key by bar 15 = A minor

    Harmony: Overlapping parts harpsichord accompanies with arpeggios,


    evidence of call and response

    Texture: smooth, flowing texture, ‘waves’ of texture as instruments start


    and stop and overlap

    Baroque features:
    Few instructions to performers in the score
    Lots of passing notes
    Chromatic scales
    circle of fifths, (sequences)
