be Lincoln may have freed all men, but Sam Colt made them equal. This post-Civil War slogan eq eq woul woul have been music to Sam Colts would ears h he lived long enough to hear it. had Yet, even before his death at the age of 47, he knew that his invention of a weapon capable of firing without reloading was a tremendous success throughout the world. Some 19th-century historians have gone so far as to say that Sam Colts invention altered the course of history. Whatever the case, when all was said and done, no one could deny that Sam Colt had achieved both fame and fortune known to few other inventors. Sam Colts success story began with the issuance of a U.S. patent in 1836 for the Colt firearm equipped with a revolving cylinder containing five or six bullets. Colts revolver provided its user with greatly increased firepower. The Colt revolving-cylinder concept is said to have occurred to Sam Colt while serving as a seaman aboard the sailing ship Corvo. There he observed a similar principle in the workings of the ships capstan. During his leisure hours, Sam carved a wooden representation of his idea. 175 years ago, Sam Colt harnessed a dream and turned it into one of the most historically significant inventions of the modern world. Today his legacy continues.

THE 1836 COLT Paterson 5-shot revolver was the first commercial repeating firearm employing a revolving cylinder with multiple chambers aligned with a single, stationary barrel. Its design was patented by Samuel Colt on February 25, 1836, and it derived its name from being produced in Colts first plant in Paterson, New Jersey. Sam was 22. In 1845, units of the U.S. Dragoon forces and Texas Rangers engaged in fighting the Indians in Texas credited their use of Colt firearms for their great success in defeating Indian forces.

1847 Walker
U.S. WAR DEPARTMENT officials reportedly were favorably impressed with the 1836 Paterson. As a result, when the Mexican War began in 1846, Capt. Samuel H. Walker, U.S. Army, traveled east, looked up Sam Colt, and collaborated on the design of a new, more powerful revolver. The result was the 1847 Walker, the largest and most powerful black powder repeating handgun ever made. Samuel Walker carried two of his namesake revolvers in the Mexican American War.

1860 Army
THE COLT .44-CALIBER Army Model was one of the most widely used revolvers of the Civil War. It was favored as a side arm by cavalry, infantry, and artillery troops. More than 200,000 were manufactured from 1860 through 1873. Colts biggest customer was the U.S. Government, with over 127,000 units being purchased and issued to the troops. The 1860 Army was a single action, six-shot weapon accurate up to 100 yards.

THE GATLING GUN is one of the best known early rapidfire weapons and a forerunner of the modern machine gun. It was used by Union forces during the Civil War, the first time it was employed in combat. The Gatling gun was designed by Dr. Richard J. Gatling in 1861 and production by Colt began shortly thereafter. Gatling wrote that he created the gun to reduce the size of armies and so reduce the number of deaths by combat and disease, and to show how futile war is. Critics point out that General George Custers legacy might have been different had he accepted the offer to use a battery of Gatling guns before his fateful day. He believed the heavy guns would impede his rapid march to the Little Big Horn.

That gun became known as the world-famous Single Action Army Model 1873, and it was designed to use metallic ammunition that contained its own primer. No Colt revolver has earned greater acclaim than the 1873 Single Action Army. S.A.A. owners have included the most famous and infamous of Americas frontier past: Theodore Roosevelt, Buffalo Bill Cody, Wyatt Earp, Pat Garrett, Billy the Kid, and countless others who, with the support of Colt revolvers, created the American West of history and legend.

OVER THE LAST century and three-quarters, Colt has had many individuals at the helm, starting with Samuel Colt. Today, Colts leadership is as powerful as ever under the direction of Lt. Gen. William M. Keys USMC (Ret.) as President and Chief Executive Officer. A decorated combat veteran of the Vietnam War and Operation Desert Storm, General Keys took the helm of the company at a critical time and General William M. Keys at Colt headquarters 2010. shepherded it through legal thicket and successfully reoriented the business back toward profit and growth. As a combat veteran and an avid shooter and collector himself, General Keys has provided the company with a leader who appreciates and understands firearms as few others do.
