LIGHT EMITTING POLYMER

Presented By: Syed Abbu Zar P.Nitin Sai

INTRODUCTION
LEP is an emissive technology that emits light as a function of electrical operation. It exhibits electroluminescent characteristics. It emits light under the application of electric field. E.g- polyvinyl chloride. Polymer based LEP was discovered in 1990

CONDUCTING POLYMERS
Three type of conducting polymer are there 1.conductor(bg-1ev) 2.semiconductor(bg-2.2ev) 3.insulator(bg-10ev)

Structure of LEP
LEP consists of a thin film of polymer sandwiched between an anode and a cathode. Indium tin oxide(ITO) is usually as anode. Metals are used as cathode.

How LEP works

Electric field is applied between two electrodes. The electrons are injected from cathode and holes from anode. The injected charges recombined & decay radiatively.

Electric field is applied between two electrodes

Then both types of charge carriers migrate into the polymer

Two types of displays

The LEP displays are two types. Passive matrix Active matrix.

Types of LEPs
The types of LEPs available in the market include Flexible Stacked Transparent

Advantages
Require only 3.3 volts and have lifetime of more then 30,000 hours. Greater power efficiency than all other flat panel displays. Can be viewed at any angle. Cost much less to manufacture and run than CRTs, because the active material used is plastic. Higher luminescence efficiency.

Limitations
Ageing of LEP Space Charge Effect

APPLICATIONS
Multi or full colour cell phone displays Full colour high-resolution personal digital assistants(PDAs) Lightweight wrist watches High definition televisions Roll-up daily refreshable electronic newspapers Automobile light systems without bulbs

Conclusion
LEPs are promising, low cost solutions for todays flat panel displays. These replace bulky and heavy CRT displays in the near future.
