III B.Tech Supplimentary Examinations, Aug/Sep 2008 CAD-CAM (Mechatronics) Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 80 Answer any FIVE Questions All Questions carry equal marks 1. A physical space of (0, 0) to (225, 125) in mm is to be displayed on screen with a resolution of 1280 x 1024 pixels with an aspect ratio of 1. Find the necessary mapping required from physical coordinates to pixels. Also determine the pixel coordinates (only end points and no interpolations) of a line whose physical coordinates of end points are (65, 55) and (160, 80). [16] 2. A scaling factor of 2 is applied in the Y direction while no scaling is applied in the X direction to the line whose two end points are at coordinates (1, 3) and (3, 6). The line is to be rotated subsequently through 300 , in the counter clockwise direction. Determine the necessary transformation matrix for the operation and the new coordinates of the end points. [16] 3. Explain the range of modeling facilities desired in a system suitable for predominantly mechanical engineering oriented with mass production. Specify the drafting features that one should consider for a modeling system required in a CIM environment. [16] 4. Explain the following facilities in Autodesk inventor with an example Shell, rib, loft, swap, coil, thread. [16] 5. (a) What is a preparatory function? Name any four such functions. (b) What is a miscellaneous function? Explain its importance. Give any four examples. [8+8] 6. Bring out the dierences between the Process type layout and GT layout. 7. III B.Tech Supplimentary Examinations, Aug/Sep 2008 CAD-CAM (Mechatronics) Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 80 Answer any FIVE Questions All Questions carry equal marks 1. Let us assume that you are in an oce or a computer lab. If you look around you, there are many objects that serve as good CAD models. Classify each of the following objects as 21/2D, composite 21/2D, or 3D models: keyboard, mouse, mouse cable, computer monitor, printer, chair, computer tables, a cell phone, a printer cable, your backpack, trash paper basket, and computer-system box. [16] 2. Given three points P1 , P2 and P3 that belong to a geometric model and given three other points Q1 , Q2 and Q3 nd the transformation matrix [T] that: (a) Transforms P1 to Q1 (b) Transforms the direction of the vector (P2 - P1 ) into the direction of the vector (Q2 - Q1 ) (c) Transforms the plane of the three points P1 , P2 and P3 into the plane of Q1 , Q2 and Q3 . [16] 3. Specify the three principal classications of the geometric modeling systems and write in brief about each of them. [16] 4. A user uses a line operation and clicks close to end points P1 and P2 to close the polygon. shown in gure 4 When the user utilized a later operation to calculate the area enclosed by the polygon, the system issued an error message that the polygon was not closed. How is this possible and how can the user solve the problem? [16]
Figure 4 5. (a) What is meant by tool o set compensation? Discuss its importance. (b) What are the characteristics of ATC? How do they dier from Turrets? [8+8] 6.
