    King Carol II of Romania ruled from 1930 to 1940. Some key events in his life include deserting the Romanian army during WWI to be with his mistress, having several marriages that ended in divorce or annulment, being banished from Romania in the 1920s by his cousin King Ferdinand for an affair, returning to Romania in 1930 after Ferdinand's death and being proclaimed King, and dismantling parliamentary democracy in 1938 in favor of a royal dictatorship before being forced to abdicate in 1940.

    King Carol II (1893-1953) - Important Dates

    October 3rd 1893 Born at Sinaia 1914 At age 21 Carol becomes heir to the Throne and senator in Romanian Parliament 1914 War breaks out, Carol deserts Romanian army to be with his mistress Ioana Lambrino 31st August 1918 Carol marries Lambrino 1919 Marriage annulled by the Ilfov Tribunal 1920 Lambrino gives birth to Mircea Gregor Carol Lambrino, Carols son 10th March 1921 Carol marries Princess Elena in Athens, Greece October 25th 1921 Queen Elena gives birth to Prince Mihai, future king of Romania 1922 Carol falls in love with Elena Lupescu, they run away to Paris, Ferdinand revokes Carols titles, Mihai announced as successor to the throne

    1927 King Ferdinad dies, Mihai becomes king of Romania under regency of Prince Nicolae, Ferdinands brother 1928 Bratianu, leader of Liberal party dies, country and parliament descends into chaos, Peasant party takes control 6th June 1930 Carol returns to Romania 8th June 1930- Carol proclaimed King of Romania 1938 Carol disintegrates parliamentary democracy in favour of a royal dictatorship 1940 Loss of Basarabia, Northern Bucovina to USSR and Northwestern Transylvania to Hungary September 6th 1940 Carol forced to abdicate in favour of Mihai September 7th 1940 Carol leaves Romania for the last time 1949 Carol marries Elena Lupescu 1953 Carol dies of cancer whilst living in Portugal 2003 Remains of Carol are returned to Romania from Portugal
