ES 65 Problem Solving Drill I

1. A vertical cylindrical tank with a diameter of 12 m and a depth of 4 m is filled with water to the
top with water at 20 oC. If the water is heated to 50 oC, how much water will spill over? Specific
weight of water at 20 oC and 50 oC is 9.79 kN/m3 and 9.69 9.79 kN/m3, respectively.

2. Air is kept at a pressure 0f 200 kPa and a temperature 0f 30 oC in a 500-L container. What is
the mass of the air?

3. (a) If 12 m3 of nitrogen at 30oC and 125 kPa(abs) is permitted to expand isothermally to 30 m3,
what is the resulting pressure? (b) What would the pressure and temperature have been if the
process had been isentropic?

4. A square block weighing 1.1 kN and 250 mm on an edge slides down an incline on a film of oil
6.0 µm thick. Assuming a linear velocity profile in the oil and neglecting air resistance, what is
the terminal velocity of the block? The viscosity of oil is 7 mPa-s. Angle of inclination is 20o.

5. For the tank shown in the figure, compute the pressure at points B, C, D, and Bin kPa. Neglect
the unit weight of air.

6. A glass U-tube open to the atmosphere at both ends is shown. If the U-tube contains oil and
water, determine the specific gravity of the oil.

7. A force of 460 N is exerted on lever AB as shown. The end B is connected to a piston which
fits into a cylinder having a diameter of 60 mm. What
fore FD acts on the larger piston, if the volume between
C and D is filled with water?
8. In the figure shown, stop B will break if the force on it reaches 40 kN.
Find the critical water depth. The length of the gate perpendicular to
the sketch is 1.5m.

9. Determine the magnitude of force on the inclined gate 1.5 m

by 0.5 m shown in the figure. The tank of of water is completely
closed and the pressure gage at the bottom of the tank reads
90kPa. Use specific weight of water to be 9,800 N/m3.

10. The submerged curve AB is one quarter of a circle of radius

2 m and is located on the lower corner of a tank as shown. The
length of the tank perpendicular to the sketch is 4 m. Find the
magnitude of the horizontal andvertical component of the total
force on AB.

11.An iceberg having specific gravity of 0.92 is floating on

salt water of s.g 1.03. If the volume of ice above the water
surface is 1000 m3, what is the total volume of the ice?
