Revelation 21:6

Ive had enough of the overseers restrictions!, James cried. Just calm down sir. Hes only doing what he needs to to look out for the vault and its wellbeing!, Jonas said calmly, You are using up an exorbitant amount of resources on a project that may or may not work. Im leaving. Where will you go? Up.. there? Where else?! This lab and this place has outlived its utility. I will return to Rivet city to see Doctor Lee. You have a son James! You cant just up and abandon them! I wont be! There are 18 now, been working for 5 years, and more importantly, I single handedly raised them., he countered, I will be leaving them with everything I can and will do it in the night so they cant object. Im coming with you. Im not asking you to. Id rather you didnt, you have been a good friend Jonas, I dont want you endangered. No. You need me topside as your assistant. I have nothing to do down here anymore. Thank you Jonas. ***** Christ it is bright out here. At this point James can hear the vault door screeching shut behind him. Im back off to Megaton then. James walks off towards a large scrap heap of a city on the horizon to the SE of his underground home. I need to keep going. For Jonas. *FLASHBACK* Officer Mack! Unhand him!!!, James shouted at the security officer. Why are you two in the Overseers office at this hour?, Officer Mack accused, What is your business?! Were leaving here. The vault!, James replied, The tunnel to the door is wide open already and the main door will only be a matter of moments! Now unhand him and just let us go! Run James!, Jonas cried out of pain as Officer Mack threw him to the ground.

James turns tail and runs as the Officer raises his gun. He hears the crack of the firearm and a scream of pain. *CURRENT TIME* And that is how I got out.., James trails off as the old, weathered bar keep looks at him. One on the house old friend, water or booze? The old man asked with a smile and a thick Scottish accent. Water please Moriarty. No time for drinking now. Not yet. Ill fetch some of the good stuff then answer all your questions. Go get comfortable upstairs in my quarters so we can talk in private. Gob will man the bar. James plods upstairs in his blue jump suit, with the numbers 101 stitched in yellow on the back. Finding Moriartys room, he enters and sits on the broken chair in the corner. He unzips his suit and pulls out the things hes taken with him and takes account to make sure its all there. My journals, check, .32 pistol, check, a few rounds of ammo, check, a handful of Stimpaks, check, canteen, check. Should have filled that first.., James sighs, Oh well, I can talk to Moriarty about that. You said my name?, Moriarty peeks in suddenly and makes James jump. Yes! I was going to ask if I could fill my canteen somewhere. Hmm.. Yes. For a price. Name it. One of those cute little Vault-Tec patches off your suit. Done!, James tears the patch from the suit and hands it to Moriarty. Good, remind me on your way out and well get it filled. Now, Moriarty, tell me, what has happened since I went under? Ah yes, now let me think.. I guess Ill start with DC as I guess thats where youre off to anyways. The Brotherhood of Steel are still at it with the whole humanitarian thing. The super mutant reports keep piling in on Galaxy News Radio.. James cuts him off, Galaxy News Radio, what is that? The Radio station out of downtown DC! Its a news and music station run by this Three Dog fella. Recently got really staticy out this way though. Surely some technical issue someone will get to fixing. Where is this station? Straight East of here in DC, are you going to go there? First thing. No time for rest. If theyre a news station I need to go and ask a few questions of them. James said while standing up and gathering his things, You say straight East?

Yessir. Youll need to take the metro tunnels. Im sure you remember. Mighty dangerous out there, Ill give you a few things for the trip. Thank you Moriarty. Youre nothing but good to us. Ah yes, us, how is the young one? Good and safe in the Vault. God forbid if he passes through here, do not recognize him and look surprised to see him. Chances are you wont recognize him anyway. Message received, let me get you a few things. Your pistol is a .32 yes? Sure is. Ill meet you out back of the bar. No time to get held up by any other citizens. ***** Alright James, you have a full canteen, a handful more of rounds and 3 grenades I saved for just such an occasion. Moriarty said as he handed James the rest of the items. Ill see you on the other side then., James states as he shakes his old friends hand as if it were the last time hell see him. Remember, Chevy Chase Tunnel, straight East across the river. So long. James walks towards the wall and slips through to the outside avoiding the main gate. He looks longingly into the sky shielding his eyes as he hasnt seen the Sun in almost 20 years, gets his bearings and walks off into the distance. A far off screech of metal and a thud is heard. James quickens his pace. ***** James is wading through a shallow point in a greened river and a steady tick is audible from his Geiger Counter. Maybe this.. Three Dog guy can help me with that once I arrive. James pulls his arm towards his face and adjusts a few dials on a device attached to his arm and a radio hiss to life, the words Pip-Boy 3000 are etched in the device. MY NAMES IS THREE DOG! BOW WOW WOW! How you kids doin today?!, Jamess radio screams. That will be enough of that. Ill speak to him when I get there. ***** James is looking up at a dirty rusted road sign in an attempt to read it. It reads The Downtown Chevy Chase District.

James sighs, This must be it then. An explosion rocks in the distance. Jesus! James exclaims, Well it is almost nightfall, I could probably make my way to the building without being noticed by.. THAT. James moves a silently as possible and slips down alleys and between cars. He sees lots of large, green creatures that may have once been human, but he goes unnoticed by all of them. Darkness creeping further and further in every minute. James sights the radio tower and a smile gets drawn across his face. More of relief than happiness though. James stands up to walk across the courtyard, but is stopped by a gate. James pulls his handgun out and carefully fires one shot into the lock and breaks it off. As he approaches he puts his hands up and slowly walks up the front stairs at the orders of the metal men out front. The Brotherhood correct? James asks. What is your business? the guard inquires. I am a Doctor that worked on the project in the Jefferson Memorial years ago. I need to have a few words with Three Dog. You.. youre Doctor James? I have heard of you. Please come in. Thank you.. Knight Albert. Thank you Knight. ***** ...and that is how I got out of the vault. James trails off. Well hot damn! Youre one fly cat James, a real enlightened guy. I like that about you and sure Ill help you out. Three Dog stated, Both with finding Dr. Li and your little radiation problem. One small stipulation. Yes? You gotta help fight the fight.. the GOOD fight. I need some things fixed up here and in DC. Which tickles your fancy? I can fix any equipment you have here. Hoowee! Sounds great friend. Just a bit of electrical work here and there and Ill tell you where Li is and give you some of my stash of meds. Ive been mooching off of the Brotherhoods shipments anyway! Hah! Youve got yourself a deal Three Dog. Where do I start? ***** Alright! Well thats everything youve told me about. Now, where can I find Li and this stash? James questioned as he put down a small kit of tools on a table.

Well the stash is right here, 1 Rad-X and 2 Rad-Away for your troubles. Not quite Vault-Tec quality, but shell get the job done., Three dog says as he pulls a few syringes and pill bottles from a bag, As for Dr. Li, youll want to look for her at Rivet City. Rivet City? Where is that from here? Straight on down South friend. Head right back out the way you came, get to the River and follow it all the way down to the memorial you speak of and look East and there will be a big ol rusty boat, THAT is Rivet City. You have been of excellent help to me Three Dog, I hope you find someone to do your downtown repairs, perhaps the Brotherhood? Thatll be the day James, thatll be the Day. A radio hisses to life in the room; INCOMING MUTANT ATTACK, MAN ALL STATIONS. Move now or never James! Someone will be along to take care of the muties, you just go and dont look back. ***** A boat would make this trip much easier., James sighed sitting on a dock stripping off of his shoes and socks squeezing them out, I wonder how Three Dog and the Brotherhood made it through that mutant attack. James looks down and clicks on his radio; WELCOME BACK KIDDIES! Im Three Dog! Alive and- And that is enough of that too!, James flinches trying to shut it off, Great guy, makes for bad radio though. James look wearily up and down the river he has been following for what must have been hours by now. He looks down at his Pip-Boy and turns a few more knobs until a green and black picture of a young adult appears on screen. He sighs longingly, and walks forth knowing he must go on. ***** What is your business in Rivet City?!, a speaker crackles out. I am here to see Dr. Li!, James shouts into the intercom before him. James stands atop a large metal platform across from an old military vessel that has been turned into Rivet City, he turns to look behind him off to the West and sees the Jefferson Memorial. Once an old world monument to an old world leader, and now may be the single key and hope to a stable world in what was Washington, DC, now simply known as the Capital Wasteland.

Please wait while the bridge extends., the speaker hisses one last time. A large metal length swings free from the side of the boats and comes to rest connected to the platform that James is standing on. He starts down the bridge to see a guard at the end with his weapon up and drawn, just to be safe he puts his hands up as he walks towards him. Who are you and what is your business?, the guard questions. My name is James and I am here to see Dr. Li. We worked side-by-side many years ago and I am here to finish our business., James calmly responds. Anything to declare? I have this small hand gun and some ammo. Hah! Hardly worth declaring, but I like your honesty. Go on in, just remember you always will be being watched. Thank you sir. Have a lovely day. James walks up to the main door of the boat and walks into a crowded market place. Have a lovely day? He is all sorts of naive. ***** I need to find something to eat and drink first before I go and see Madison. That place there on the corner looks good a place as any., James said. The market has a distinct center area between two rows of shops. Guns, Armour, Drugs, Clothes, Food, and Water. Everything anyone could need it seemed. The shop on the end had a dozen or so cafe style tables by it. James walks over to the counter and hops onto a stool and drops his head into his hands almost immediately falling asleep. Excuse me? Sir?, a young woman wearing an apron asks, Sir are you dead? James slowly looks up to see the woman standing there and a few other people looking at him. Hello? Have I done something wrong?, James inquires. Oh no no. We all just thought you were dead., the girl laughs, Shows over everyone! Hes alive! Is this where I can get food and water? Sure is! My daddy owns this place, Garys Galley! Im Angela Staley, and I take the orders and clean and he cooks the food. Would you like to see a menu? Yes! Thank you. I will just be a moment here. Just wave when youre ready. Angela walks to the other side of the bar and talks to a few other people then starts wiping tables.

Well. This is different than the Vault., James chuckles, Iguana? Bloatfly? Punga Fruit? Ah! Salisbury Steak. That sounds edible, and Ill ask her to fill my canteen. James sets down a shambled card, here for known as a menu, and puts up his hand to get the young ladys attention. You ready to order sir?, she asks pulling out a pad of paper and a pencil. Yes, I will have the Salisbury Steak and could you fill my canteen? Absolutely, that will be 35 caps. Oh my. Caps! I havent dealt that way in years. Angela looks at James inquisitively, she scans over him then realizing what he is wearing wasnt purchased at some shop, but is the real thing. Oh my goodness! Youre from a Vault!, Angela says excitedly, Were you born there? Why are you out? Is it open? What is it like? re you going back? Calm down Angela., James hushes, I dont need a scene made. I have somewhat limited time here. How about I trade you some real Vault-Tec things for my meal? That would be amazing! What do you have? How about this?, James asks as he rips off his other Vault-Tec patch, and a real Vault-Tec Holotape with pictures of my Vault and a few songs on it? Call it a deal., Angela sweeps the items off of the table and into her apron pocket, Itll be here in a minute or two, could I please have your canteen? Of course. Also, when you bring my food to me you are allowed to ask me three questions about the Vault. I would love to answer all of them, but as I said I have places to be and people to see. Okay!, the young lady said excitedly and walked back towards the kitchen and handed the paper to her father. She went back to cleaning, clearly deep in thought though, more than likely about the Vault. James then reaches into one of the pockets in his Vault attire and pulls out an IV Bag of Medication labeled with a piece of tape Rad-Away. The bag is placed on the table and he slowly rolls up the sleeve and inserts the needle into his arm, picks up the bag and starts to squeeze. Keeping careful watch on his Pip-Boys Radiometer, he consistently applies more of the medication. Until the needle finally comes to rest at zero. As he starts to remove the needle Angela walks up holding his canteen and a plate with his meal on it. Are you okay?!, Angela cries pulling the attention of some surrounding people, Why are you irradiated? I walked down the river to get here and picked up a bit over the trip., James says calmly trying to bring her excitement down, Im a doctor, have been for years, Im alright.

Okay, well here is your food, and Im here for my three answers. Alright, allow me to get started then you may ask the first one James pulls the plate to himself and takes a drink from his canteen, and folds his hands and bows his head and prays. After a few moments he looks up and says, Go ahead. Okay, first were there any dangers? Well, there was a small gang present for the time I worked there and they were mainly petty in their work, other than that theres always the worry of something going wrong with the water or air systems and then there are psychological issues of being enclosed that long. Next? Is it true that after a certain number of people is reached any extras are kicked out? No. We simply dont allow any more children to be had. Next. Why are you out here? Im here to save the world. James stands up with a smirk on his face, turns and walks off back down the corridor of stores leaving the young woman dumbfounded. Excuse me. Officer? Where are the science labs?, James inquires of one of the security guards in the market. Just up the stairs there on the side wall, through the door, straight down the hall and to your left., he responds. Thank you., and James proceeds on. He walks just as the guard tells him to and ends up facing a door called Science Lab Please let her be here. he whispers and shuts his eyes tightly, almost ina hopeful way. James burst into the door ending up on a balcony, almost exploding with excitement and cries out, Is Madison here?!, the world around him falls silent in shock, all the lab coats and coveralls stare at him and all that is heard is, James.. Dr. James?, a short woman walks through the crowd of lab coats. Madison! It is you! The two are together so quickly it may as well have been teleporting. They hug, and Madison looks up and James and asks, Why are you here? I can make it work! Project Purity! I know what I need! Please come with me and help? She looks almost upset, visibly shaken by the whole moment suddenly sobered. With a cold stare she looks a mutters, You know it wont work. We cant go back there. I refuse. It is too dangerous James.

James backs up slightly and straightens himself up, My work in the Vault Madison, it has lead me to the answer we needed all those years ago! She cant even look at him any longer, not to his face. She crosses her arms and looks down at her shoes. Deep down she knows she wants nothing more than to work with Dr. James again, I cant go with you. I wont. Well I am disappointed, Dr. Li. I guess I will venture on alone, but Ill know where to find you.., James says completely shocked. He walks back up the stairs he had just descended with so much hope. Now he must ascend with nothing but determination. He plods along down the empty, metallic corridors of the empty, emotionless boat. Left alone to his thoughts he makes the short walk down the shore outside of the boat to the Jefferson Memorial he left dormant so long ago. In its 18 years of stagnant rest it has attracted some unwanted visitors. More Super Mutants, Well, James sighed, I snuck by them once, probably can again, just need to wait till nightfall. James found a few boards and leaned them against a small wall to hide under and sat there tired, but without rest, waiting for the night. Finally darkness fell over the waste land. He crept out of his little dwelling and threw all the boards off and away so no one could find a trail, thats the last thing he needed, someone following in his footsteps. As he approaches the memorial, he become one with the shadows, and slowly creeps his way along the circular edge of the catwalks he erected years ago. Still knowing every bolt and girder by the day it was laid. Eventually he ends up at the door of the building. He slowly slides open the door and lets it fall closed as quietly as possible. He shuffles his way down to the main room. There is a mutant inside with a friend or two and a turret. Huh., he whispers, I forgot that, if I can reprogram it, itll be enough of a distraction to get me in the lab. He crawls back towards the nearest computer and locates the turrets controls. Complete eradication? No. Human eradication? No. Pest control? Might work. He selects his last option and the turret opens fire on the beasts. He walks out in the open and the gun doesnt even see him. He makes a dash across the room and makes it to the control center and seals the door without a scratch and hopefully without notice. If I can find my old computer now, I can find out more about the G.E.C.K., the key to a new perfect world and it all starts here. James walks into the control room and wanders up to a terminal and surprisingly it powers up. Blast! I dont have everything here, I sure hope what I need is. ***** I'm off to Vault 112 to search for anything of Braun's that might help me get this purifier up and running. All I know is that it's West of some place called "Evergreen Mills," and it's well hidden in some sort of garage. But I'll find it, I have to. It's so close,

but that's the story of Project Purity, isn't it? An eternity of "almost there's". Let's see if Braun has the missing puzzle piece., James recites into a recorder. James places the tape he just recorded and two others down on the desk in front of him. If you are following me, I know youll find these., he trails off, deep in thought about his child, Time for act two: the escape. This time he chuckles a little, out of hope, lack of sleep, radiation poisoning, who can tell. ***** Wow, those.. things, are atrociously stupid!, James laughs almost giddy at this point.

He wanders through old residential areas, business districts, camps of shacks and open land. Even passing Megaton and Vault 101. Hours, maybe a day, who knows, he is lsot in his thoughts, everything from formulas, to ideas, to his son. Home alone. Might as well be. He finally makes it though, avoiding all scraps and misadventures, he makes it. A garage in the middle of nowhere, perfect in its time, even more perfect now. A digsuise over top of the worlds most advanced virtual life ever created, Vault 112. A Dr. Braun is its all time overseer, and the man who made the G.E.C.K., the Garden of Eden Creation Kit. A briefcase that in itself can rebuild worlds, all he needs it to do is purify water, seems almost a waste, but its what will do it and who know where it will go from there. James peeks in the door and sees a few roaches inside, he walks in, door ajar. A hidden staircase inside leads down to the Vault door. A sight for sore eyes. He trips the lever and the door shrieks open. More corridors, more machines, a home feeling if there ever was one in this world. Welcome to Vault 112. JESUS!, James shouts and falls back. Please take your place in one of the VR Pods., a robot that stands over him continues. Uhm.. thank you? Have a GOOD day., the robot rolls off into the Vault. James walks further in to reveal the largest and most complicated computer network he had ever seen. A huge glowing center with pods all around filled with the shells of people hundreds of years old. Almost like petals on a flower. He spots an open pod and gets himself situated up in it. The shell comes down on him. He is immersed suddenly in a black and white world. Very similar to his. Just perfect. No destruction, or fire, just life, families, and homes. Most importantly Dr. Braun is here, and he will know

where the kit is that will lead to a new world. A little girl approaches James, Do you want to play a game? My name is Sally. Uhm, actually I am here to find a man named Dr. Braun.. sweetie?, James replies. Oh my. Are you really now?, the sweet little girl spouts off in a very thick German male accent, Well you may have just found him. Uhm.. Dr. Braun? Inventor of the G.E.C.K.? Is a little girl? Only here.. What is your name? Dr. James. Only here Dr. James, This is my world where I am what I please and here I am a little girl who enjoys trading. You play my games, I give you the information you seek. On a sign of good faith I will answer one question, game free. Where is the nearest kit from here? Can it purify water?, James begins to ramble every question he has off. ENOUGH! Braun turns him into a Dog. I said one question, I had one rule. I will call you.. Doc. Youd better hope someone comes and saves you. Do you have anyone on the outside? Anyone who loves you? For your sake I hope you do. By: Ian Anderson

***** My story is based off of a game called Fallout 3 in which you play a character whose father, James, abandons them and you go and follow him and get in a whole mess of messes along the way. I personally, through all 24 of my playthroughs I always wanted to hear James's side of everything. From the point of leaving, to the point of becoming a dog at the hands of Dr. Braun in Vault 112. So I decided I ought to do it myself, with some encouragement from the good folks at http://www.reddit.com/r/ fallout, I let them know of my idea and I was ranked at the #4 post on the site within a day. So lets get down to it. I was not able to go to into nearly as much detail as I would have liked, but such it is. I kept as much as I could accurate, as far as names go and direct interactions with the games player character. The note that James recorded in the monument is actually word for word from the game. Everyone from Three Dog, to Madison, to Jonas, all their interactions were as close to the games as I could get them. One thing Fallout doesnt excel at is dialogue so I dressed that up a bit more than the actual characters speech in the game.

As far as events that let us know the player character is near I included the needed repairs at Galaxy News Radio along with the mutant attack, the notes in the memorial, and Dr. Lis sourness at your arrival. I had to add in certain things, like the encounter between Officer Mack and Jonas and Dr. James meeting Angela. Overall and after a few reads, I am calling this a marvelous success and am more than pleased with the results.
