Our Vision
Oasis Academy Silvertown will be situated south of the Royal Docks, in the London Borough of Newham. It is being developed in partnership with Britannia Village Primary School and Water City, to allow a seamless transition from primary to secondary school, ensuring the outstanding primary education and pastoral care currently offered to local children is continued at local secondary school. We will create a healthy, safe, nurturing environment where community is paramount. The Academy will be a place where young people and those working with them feel that there is genuinely no better place to learn, grow and work. Creativity will be cherished and encouraged, and the joy of learning will be evident. We will work closely with families, so our team can help to provide the nurturing care and support that each student needs into their teenage years. We will also work with youthwork and healthcare providers in Britannia Village, Silvertown and North Woolwich to enrich students studies by integrating them with other community based learning, sporting and social activities. By partnering with local employers, including London City Airport, Water City and other community members, we will raise students aspirations, broaden their horizons and offer clear pathways into higher education and fulfilling employment.
3
In the past the Royal Docks were Britains gateway to the world and a hub of innovation and industry. Since the docks closed more than 30 years ago the area has been left isolated and deprived. We believe a new local secondary school is key to rebuilding a stronger sense of community in the area. By providing young people with aspirational and enjoyable education it will increase access to employment and help alleviate problems, including anti-social behaviour and crime. The school will be at the heart of the new Royal Docks Enterprise Zone which is bringing huge investment and regeneration to the area, especially in the emerging green and creative industries. Planned developments at Silvertown Quays and Minoco Wharf will bring thousands more homes and job opportunities. Our vision is to make sure that all our children can benefit from and contribute to this regeneration process and make the most of the full range of these great new opportunities.
Our Principles
To achieve our vision for students we will prioritise four key principles for life, within and beyond our community, leading to exceptional outcomes: Integrity Developing well-rounded students: academically, creatively, socially, physically, emotionally and morally Equipping students to make wise choices and become responsible citizens Teaching students to treat others with respect and as they would like to be treated themselves Independence Helping build confidence in young people, to allow their personalities to flourish in order to avoid negative peer pressure Developing key life skills Developing work-related skills to take maximum advantage of job opportunities Interdependence Encouraging students to interact with each other across all year groups, bridging social divisions and celebrating diversity Involve and inform all our students about the whole life of the school, celebrating and appreciating each others contribution. Using the expressive and performing arts to help students to grow in confidence, and appreciate different and complementary gifts in each other
Inspiration Raising the aspirations of students from all backgrounds Creating an appetite for life-long learning so that students can continue to succeed and adapt in an ever-changing world. Oasis Academy Silvertown will: Ignite young peoples curiosity and thirst for learning Develop a unique set of community partnerships to offer increased tailor-made, personalised learning and individual one-to-one tuition to each student Offer a curriculum with a range of rich, enjoyable and high quality learning experiences. Alongside a clear emphasis on the National Curriculum core subjects including English, maths and science, the school will aim to offer additional enrichment activities including music, drama, dance, visual arts, politics, debating, environmental studies and computer programing Train teachers to identify and adapt teaching styles to the needs of students who have specific learning difficulties Serve local children, and accept students irrespective of faith or ability Create extended educational opportunities for the whole community
The Governance
The School Council will be made up of representatives from parents/carers and staff, alongside other representatives from the local community and local businesses appointed for their skills, abilities and local knowledge, as well as from Oasis Community Learning and one from the Local Authority.
The Site
Currently several local options are being actively explored, although at present, the site of the school is yet to be finalised. This will be confirmed as part of our stage two submission to the Department for Education in 2013.
We will work with Oasis and Britannia Village Primary School to ensure the success and quality of the new school, and its integration into the wider economic opportunities in the Royal Docks and further afield. This would form part of a wider Water City programme seeking to maximise the potential of the on-going redevelopment of the Royal Docks, particularly for the benefit of the local community.
