Specifications
Joslyn Pole Line Hardware is designed and manufactured primarily from specially selected steel, or ductile/malleable iron castings with chemical and physical properties most suitable for product performance and applications in which they are used. In addition, Joslyn also manufactures products from various types of materials including wood, aluminum and plastic alloys such as our nylon alloy (JEM Joslyn Engineered Material) insulator threads on forged steel crossarm pins. Joslyn products are engineered for strength, reliability, durability and ease of installation. Our modern, efficient production equipment and rigid quality control standards assure that Joslyn hardware is consistently of the highest obtainable quality. Large hardware inventories are maintained by our nationwide network of experienced electrical and telecommunications distributors as well as at our hardware manufacturing facility in Chicago, Illinois. Numerous other hardware products, not shown in this catalog, are produced for customers on special orders in quantities that justify production. Anchors Power Hub, CAM ACTION

The patented Joslyn CAM ACTION power hub screw anchor system offers a versatile and cost effective power driven screw anchor for application through Class 2 soils and to 36,000 pound holding strength. A complete power hub anchor assembly consists of a helix-hub assembly, anchor rod and eyenut. The helix-hub assemblies are offered with single and double CAM ACTION helix configurations. Available with 1-3/8 square hub for 6,000 ft.-lbs. torque capacity and 1-1/2 square hub for 6,000 and 8,000 ft.-lbs. torque capacity. The anchor rods are available in 5/8, 3/4 and 1-inch diameters for 16,000, 23,000 and 36,000 pound tensile strengths, respectively. Anchor rod lengths are either 3-1/2 or 7 feet. Anchor rod extension assemblies (anchor rod with coupling) can be used when greater installed depths are required. Eyenuts are available in Thimbleye, Twineye and Tripleye configurations for one, two or three guys, respectively. These anchors can be installed to a depth of 14 feet with either dangle torque motor type line trucks or rack type digger trucks utilizing the Joslyn J-CLAW installing tool system. Joslyn offers additional information for the selection of the appropriate anchor components and installation procedures.
TESTING
Utilizing electronic torque measuring and recording instruments, installing torque can be continuously recorded with anchor depth. These torque values validate each anchor installation and enable Joslyn to custom design and recommend the proper anchor configuration for each customer requirement. Torque values can also be obtained by using a calibrated hydraulic pressure gauge on the line truck. Applying these pressure gauge readings to Joslyns line application data, our customers can measure and evaluate their own installation performance.

These anchors can be installed either manually or with power driven equipment. Manual installation is accomplished by inserting a bar through the eye and screwing the anchor down. Installation with portable or vehicle mounted installing equipment is accomplished by means of adapters. The eye dimensions are the same as shown on the Threaded Forged-Eye Anchor Rods.

Anchors Rock 1
The malleable iron expanding rock anchor fits into a hole 1-7/8-inch or 2-3/8-inch in diameter, expands and wedges firmly against solid rock. When the anchor is expanded, the greater the pull on the rod, the harder the anchor becomes wedged. No lead, concrete or grouting equipment is necessary. Furnished complete with 3/4-inch and 1-inch rods, 15-inch to 8-foot in length. Anchors are coated and the rods are hot dip galvanized. Set in holes drilled a minimum 12-inches deep in Class 1Hard Rock, these anchors will develop the full strength of the anchor rod. Rod should be set in line with the guy. Ultimate strength: with 3/4-inch rod, 23,000 pounds; with 1-inch rod, 36,000 pounds.

The multi-blade, one-piece top plate expands upon impact into undisturbed earth to form a cone shaped square, which distributes the anchors holding power over a wide area, building up compression against an inverted pyramid of earth. The expanding anchor retains its shape under extremely heavy loads because the base plate supports the blades in the middle and distributes the load uniformly over the blades. Reinforcing ribs provide additional strength.

Joslyn Guy Attachments provide an economical and efficient means of fastening guys to poles. Well rounded wire grooves protect the strand from damage. The formed steel style guy attachments feature a closed strand loop. The ears of the malleable guy attachments will accommodate any type of guy loop or clamp bail. The lower mounting hole is for a 1/2-inch lag screw. Wherever possible, installation should be made under the head of a machine bolt. Guy attachments are not recommended to be mounted on the threaded end of a bolt as tensile and bending stresses on bolt threads can result in premature bolt failure less than the bolt minimum tensile strength.

Joslyn Ground Wire Bayonets are used for supporting overhead ground wires. Clamps are not included and should be ordered separately. Top hole and slot are 9/16-inch diameter on 2-inch hole centers for mounting clamps with 1/2-inch diameter bolts. The straight type consists of one angle with clamp holes punched in both legs to permit mounting the bayonet to either the face or the side of the pole. Straight bayonets also have a 7/16-inch diameter hole at the bottom for a ground lug if required. Corner bayonets consist of two angle sections and two 1/2-inch bolts for fastening them together. One angle is offset to fit 8-inch diameter poles; however, the legs can either be spread or pushed together to fit other diameters. The mounting bolt holes in the bent legs are slotted to allow for any pole boring inaccuracy. All bayonets have mounting holes for 5/8-inch bolts.

Joslyn forged oval eyebolts are commonly used with thimbles, clevises and other pole line hardware items for overhead guying and deadending. Regular oval eyebolts are roll threaded and furnished with one square nut. Double arming eyebolts serve as a combination eyebolt and double arming bolt. They have cut threads and come complete with three square nuts. Both types have cone points to allow driving without damage to the threads and to make the engaging and threading of nuts quicker and easier. Length is measured from below the eye to the last thread. The J8930 screw eyebolt has rolled gimlet threads for screwing into trees, poles and crossarms.

They are used for side-of-pole installation when supporting neutral conductors in single-phase construction and secondary service wires. The double upset type provide 1-5/8-inch clearance between insulator and pole. These spool bolts have 5/8-inch rolled threads and all associated hardware is furnished complete as illustrated. The J0101, J101 or J151 insulator must be ordered separately.

The J0590 Service Mast Bracket is used with a service wedge clamp to attach the neutral wire of drop cable to the service mast. The front strap is rounded to prevent damaging the bail of the service wedge clamp. This bracket clamps to 1-1/4-inch to 3-inch pipe. A specially designed slot on the end of the front strap permits installation of the bracket without removing the bolts, then captures the square carriage bolt shoulder to prevent it from turning or slipping out after installation.

The J252 and J255 Secondary Pulley Brackets are designed for use both as stringing pulleys and as secondary clevises, making them especially useful for stringing and sagging conductors. The conductor is strung and sagged with the bracket in the pulley position where it cannot bind. The 90 slot in the base makes it possible to rotate the bracket into the clevis position before or after the conductor is tied to the spool. The J252 light-type has a metal tab which contains the insulator bolt. The cotter bolt of the J255 heavy duty-type threads into the bottom of the clevis, locking the special Twist-Lock head into a groove in the clevis top. Both features eliminate the cotter pin.

These cast iron fittings are used with standard pipe near sidewalks and buildings where there is insufficient space for standard guying and where head clearance must be maintained. The J1501 pole plate is mounted with one 5/8-inch bolt and two 1/2-inch lag screws. The J1502 end fitting clamps the strand. The J0521 pole plate has four 9/16-inch holes for mounting with lag screws. The J0522 end fitting requires a J931 guy clamp which must be ordered separately. The 5/8 x 2-1/4-inch track bolt replaces one of outer bolts of the J931 guy clamp.

Braceless crossarm gains improve the stability of the crossarm and eliminate the need for crossarm braces and pole gaining. The design improves the structure appearance and permits the use of wood, steel channel or steel tubular arms. They accommodate pole diameters from 6 inches to 12 inches. Pole mounting slots are 13/16 inch wide on the top slot and 11/16 inch on bottom slot.

Full Round Guards are provided with U-bolt clamps at both ends. The bottom fitting clamps directly to the guy rod. A slot near the base of the guard easily engages the tongue of the fitting. Then, the swivel type top clamp is installed without removing the nuts. Half Round Guards come with either a hook or clamp at the top. The curved jaws of the heavy gauge steel hook tighten firmly on 1/4 to 9/16-inch strand as the guard is brought down into position. Two holes are available in the top clamp type, the lower of which is used on short sweep guys. Seven holes in the lower portion of both styles allow for proper positioning of the bottom clamp to the strand.

Full Round Guard With Galvanized Clamp

The 2-inch diameter full round design permits complete coverage of the guy wire and anchor rod for maximum protection and improved visibility. The guards are produced from high impact resistant polyethylene which is ultraviolet stabilized for long life and resistance to fading. A 3-inch long partial cutout is located at one end to facilitate installation of the galvanized bolted clamp assembly. This clamp assembly provides a secure metal to metal connection to guy wire sizes 3/16-inch through 1/2-inch diameter. The other end of the guard is secured around the guy wire by hand insertion of the one way, spiked plastic rivet.

The 2-1/2-inch diameter, two-thirds round design provides excellent visibility and permits installation over anchor rods up to 1-1/4-inch diameter. The guards are produced from high impact resistant PVC with ultraviolet stabilizers added for retention of color under U.V. conditions. Four sets of holes are located along the guard to permit flexibility of mounting positions. Two different attachment methods are availablebolted clamp assemblies or wire ties. These guards utilize a 23-inch long, helically formed polyethylene pigtail which is wrapped around the guy strand to provide an efficient tool-free installation to guy strand sizes 3/16-inch through 1/2-inch. One end of the helical pigtail is secured to the guy guard body with a marine grade aluminum rivet positioned 5 feet above the bottom of the guard. The type B placing hook is used as a stringing tool to facilitate the installation of figure 8 cable. The hollow base of the hook permits installation over the nut and washer of the thru bolt. If additional safety factors are required, the hook can remain installed between the pole and the cable suspension clamp.

The Guy Strand Holder offers a neat, economical, field proven means of handling guy strand safely. Reduces accidents from exploding guy strand coils and speeds up construction through orderly handling. Once the guy strand has been placed in the holder it is firmly contained and, consequently, cannot get out of control. Thus the hazard to linemen and passing traffic is eliminated. Economies result from the facility with which the strand can be unreeled from the holderit is paid out from the center in the same manner as rope from the inside of a coil; and from its mobilityit can be mounted on a bracket on the side of a line truck or readily carried from the truck to the job. In either case, the strand will pay out satisfactorily without requiring further attention at the holder. The strand will uncoil only while it is being pulled. In addition to the guy strand, the holder is a convenient fixture for handling other types of coiled wire.

The rung is knurled by a rolling process which circumferentially covers the 5/8-inch diameter rungs with flattened pyramidal points. The grooves between these points provide a path for water and mud to escape from the surface of the rungs thus providing a self-cleaning, skid-resistant surface under both wet and dry conditions. The flattened points minimize possible injury if the rungs are grasped with unprotected hands.

Each link is made from two pieces of 1-1/2 x 3/16-inch steel that are fabricated, galvanized and then riveted together with a stainless steel rivet. Riveting after galvanizing assures that there is zinc between the two pieces of steel for maximum corrosion resistance. Joslyn has designed its J6865 and J6866 one-piece triple transformer racks to make installation easier by making them lighter. These one-piece transformer racks can be assembled with transformers on the ground and then hoisted as a unit into position for mounting on the pole. The J6866 rack can be used to mount three transformers ranging from 75 kVA through 333kVA (24 mounting hole spacing). Each position is designed to accommodate ANSI type B lug spacing. Six 3/4-inch x 2-1/2-inch machine bolts are included for bolting the transformer to the rack. It is recommended the rack be fastened to the pole with two 3/4-inch machine bolts and four 1/2-inch lag screws. Holes are provided on the rack for a groundwire lug. The J6865 rack has 12 lug centers for mounting three, 3kVA through 50kVA transformers. Six 5/8-inch x 1-3/4-inch machine bolts are included for bolting the transformer to the rack. It is secured to the pole with two 3/4-inch machine bolts and two 1/2-inch lag screws to prevent the installation from wobbling in the wind. Holes are provided for a groundwire lug.

The 51-Orange, 51-Peach and 51-Plum must be used when splicing ACSR with separate core and cover sleeves. The No. 53-XPJ Tool is a 3-groove tool. This tool will accommodate any Nicopress item with a stock number ending in X, P or J. The concave locknut is a free-spinning, square or hexagon locknut that starts freely from either side, and spins into place with the fingers. One-half to a full turn with a wrench locks it securely. When the arched surface contacts the top of the common nut or bearing surface, wrenching flattens the arch, deflecting the nut threads from their true helix and causing them to firmly grip the bolt threads. The nut takes a permanent set and must be wrenched for further movement.

Regular nuts are used on all types of threaded bolts and insulator pins, while heavy nuts are used exclusively on anchor rods. Joslyn square nuts are manufactured in accordance with American National Standards Institute Specifications B18.2.2 and tapped Unified National Coarse Thread Series Class 2B after centrifugal hot dip galvanizing, oversize for galvanized bolts and rods.

Joslyn Z-series, insulator pins were developed to address environmental concerns associated with the manufacture, handling, and disposal of lead thread pins. Insulator threads for Z-series pins are produced from an advanced J.E.M. (Joslyn Engineered Material) nylon alloy compound. The J.E.M. material is a special nylon alloy blend to assure proper electrical and mechanical performance. The threads are flexible, yet more resilient than lead, offering superior insulator fit and conductor groove alignment. Joslyn nylon alloy thread type pins are available for 1-inch and 1-3/8inch pin type insulator thread sizes. Joslyn Z-series pins exceed the performance requirements of ANSI C135.22 specifications for lead thread pins. In addition to the ANSI requirements, Joslyn Z-series pins have been subjected to an extensive battery of tests to assure long-term performance in severe service conditions. The additional tests include: horizontal fatigue; aeolian vibration; corona; ultraviolet; and cold temperature impact.

Joslyn lead threads are available for 1-inch and 1-3/8-inch pin type insulator thread sizes. The lead threads are tightly bonded to forged crossarm pins and formed steel pole top pins through a process of casting the lead-antimony alloy directly to the pin. A raised ring of lead at the top of the thread minimizes strains from developing when the insulator is tightened. The threads comply to ANSI standards for dimensional and performance requirements. The lead threads on the pins are shipped with an assembled cardboard protective sleeve to prevent damage to the threads during transit and handling.

Joslyn Crossarm Pins are forged in one piece from open hearth steel. Large bases distribute loads without crushing flat wood crossarms. Flared Base Closed/Folded Neck

The lower end of these pins is flattened and flared to give a solid bearing surface when mounted with the flange against the pole. Detachable Pole Steps are used to prevent unauthorized climbing to the point on a pole where permanent steps are installed. A special 9/16 x 4-inch fetter drive lag screw permanently attaches the mounting plate to the pole. Twisting is prevented by a punched projection. A nail hole is also provided. The detachable steps can be hung from the linemans belt. When attached to the pole, they extend 5-1/2 inches. Steps are turned up at the outside edge to give linemen a steady foothold.

Joslyn Secondary Racks exceed the strength specifications for both ANSI medium and heavy type racks. Smooth, rounded pressed steel struts will not damage insulation when stringing secondaries. The curved back fits snugly to the pole with a 3-1/4-inch wide bearing surface. Mounting slots on the extended styles are for 5/8-inch bolts and are spaced so that the racks may be mounted on the opposite side of the pole from a pole mounted transformer using the same mounting bolts. The groove in the back will retain a 5/8-inch square nut, permitting the rack to be installed over existing bolts without disturbing present installations. Joslyn Rack Extension Brackets are used to provide additional clearance between a secondary rack and the pole surface when necessary to clear obstructions or maintain proper wire alignment. Two brackets are required for installation. The 9 gauge steel bracket back, with a 4-inch wide bearing surface, is curved to fit the pole and has three staggered holes to permit mounting with either a 5/8-inch bolt or two 1/2-inch lag screws. A 5/8 x 2-inch carriage bolt is furnished with each bracket for attaching the rack.

Racks and Hooks, Underground Cable

Hot Dip Galvanized
Joslyn underground cable racks and hooks are used for supporting cable runs in manholes and vaults. The J5120 series are made from 3/16 x 9/16 x 1-1/2 hot rolled channel with T-slots for attaching hooks spaced at 1-1/2 intervals. 8, 14, and 18-hole racks have 3/4 x 19/32 mounting slots at each end which interlock so that two racks may be combined as one unit. The longer racks are mounted through the T-slots. Cable hooks are formed to protect cable from damage. They fit snugly into the rack slots and have turned up ends to help prevent the cable or cable rack insulator from slipping off.

Couplings for copperbonded sectional ground rods are produced from high strength bronze alloy for corrosion resistance and driving strength. Internally, they are fully threaded to allow engagement of a driving stud or coupled rods during installation. Driving studs are produced from high strength steel. The use of driving studs prevents damage to the threaded sectional rod and coupling during driving.

The hand-operated ground rod driving tool accommodates 1/2 and 5/8 diameter ground rods and will allow the installation of up to 8 foot ground rods driven from groundline level. It features reversible internal chambers which allow one end to drive the rod to 3 foot above ground level and the other end to drive the remaining 3 foot to ground level. The durable heat treated internal chambers are designed to resist mushrooming of the ground rod during the driving process.

Joslyn Threadless Couplings provide an efficient means of connecting non-threaded ground rods. The couplings feature a precision taper core which engages the ground rods during the driving process. Additionally, the tapered core includes grooved splines to increase the surface contact engagement area and to provide a further allowance for variations of ground rod diameters. These high strength couplings develop 100% conductivity of the galvanized or copper plated ground rod.

These straps are used with cable suspension clamps. Reinforcing Straps support the messenger bolt at locations of heavier than normal loading stress, such as long spans. The lower hole fits over the messenger bolt and the top end is fastened to the pole with a lag screw. The J7906 Safety Strap will prevent the cable from falling should the messenger give way. The upper hole fits over the messenger bolt and the lower end is lagged to the pole.

Joslyn Wall Straps are used for guying and deadending messenger strand to J7695 TYPICAL INSTALLATION building walls. The J7695 and J7696 terminate strand at the building corners as illustrated. Both are made of 1-3/8 x 11/32-inch steel with a forged thimbleye. The J7695 has two and the J7696 has three 9/16-inch diameter holes spaced 8-inches from center-to-center. The J7692, formed from 1-7/32 x 15/64-inch steel, is used similarly to terminate strand at a right angle to the building to the building wall. A wire rope thimble is recommended to protect the strand.

Joslyn Z-series wireholders are produced from ultraviolet stabilized nylon alloy compound with reinforced fibers which provide approximately twice the fracture strength as porcelain insulators. The engineered blend material provides insulating properties equal to porcelain. Z-series wireholders eliminate chipping and breaking problems associated with porcelain. The unique design features a square flat top which can be used with a hammer to start installation. The flat top also features an egg carton design for indexing an installing tool when using a cordless drill. Each package of Z-wireholders includes a supply of installing tools for use with a 1/2-inch drive cordless drill to obtain maximum installation efficiency.

The durable nylon alloy material is U.V. stabilized for extended service life in ultraviolet exposure. The bracket design features an open slot which allows the bracket to be installed without disassembling the bolts. Accommodates a range of 1-1/4 through 3-inch diameter pipe. Dimensions of the nylon alloy insulator are the same as shown for the J089Z wireholders.
