From the Pastors Desk
I would like to begin by thanking you all for the very
warm welcome that I have received since I arrived in
the parish. As with all moves there was some anxiety
aached to my coming, but I have to say that the
mannerinwhichIwasgreetedbothonAustraliaDay
and last weekendalleviated that anxiety to a large
degree.Forthatyouhavemythanks.

I would also like to thank in a parcular way the

army of parishioners who laboured to prepare the
Presbytery for my arrival. Your eorts made the
dreaded task of moving into my new home a lile
easiertocopewith.YouwillbepleasedtoknowthatI
have now unpacked the numerous boxes I brought
withmefromSingleton,andhavebeguntoaddafew

I would also like to acknowledge the eorts of those

who arranged and organised the cuppa aer Mass
on Australia Day. Celebrang our naonal day and
(Connued on page 2)
sharing the quintessenal cuppa was a great way to
startmypublicministryinForsterTuncurry.

I am looking forward to geng to know you all over

A change of Parish Priest will always bring with it a

few changes to the way things are done, if only
becauseofthepersonalidiosyncrasiesoftheincoming
priest.Someofthesechangeswillberelavelyminor;
otherswillbeofparcularsignicance.Idonotintend
to rush into major changes without consultaon and
conversaon,therearesomeminorchangesthatyou
may have already noced. In parcular, I would draw
youraenontothefollowing:

MydayowillbeonMonday,andwhileImaynot
physically leave town each Monday, I will be using
the day as a chance to relax and refocus in
preparaon for the week ahead. Although I will
regularly check the answering machine for any
urgent messages, please be aware that I might not
beimmediatelycontactableonMondays.

WhileIwouldhopetokeeptoaregularscheduleof
weekday Masses, there will be days when I will
need to be absent from the Parish to aend to
otherresponsibiliesIhavewiththeDiocesewhich
will result in some conict with that schedule.
Rather than constantly changing the schedule, it
would be my intenon on those days to simply
cancel the weekday Massthese changes will be
noed in bold on the front page of the bullen
eachweek(asfaraspossible).

I am always happy to meet with people who may

wish to meet with meeither by appointment or
onanad hocbasis.WhenIamnotoutandaboutI
will be working from my Presbytery study, and am
happy to meet people there. I would ask however
that you come to front door of the Presbytery so
thatwecanmeetandtalkinanappropriateseng.
Yourcooperaonwouldbeappreciated.

Ihavealwaysbelievedthatthereisnosuchthingasa
silly queson, except the one that goes unasked. I
value the possibilies that go with conversaon and
dialogue, and am only too happy to engage in that
process. If I say or do something that you are unsure
of, or have some diculty with, I would welcome the
opportunitytodiscussitwithyouoveryourchoiceof

Buried amid the General Instrucon of the Roman
Missal (GIRM), the large set of direcons that tell us
how Mass is to be celebrated in some detail, is a
remarkableand daunngunderstanding of the
signicance of the place of the Sacred Scriptures in
theliturgy:

When the Sacred Scriptures are read in the Church,

God himself speaks to his people, and Christ, present
in his word, proclaims the Gospel(GIRM,29).

The proclamaon of the Sacred Scriptures during the

Churchs liturgy is a profound acon, and one that is
more akin to the reading of a leer from a loved one
then the serious academic study of literature. The
acon is an aural one, not a visual one; one that is
moreabouttheearsthantheeyes.

The Scriptures, parcularly the New Testament, are

wrien in such a way as to lend themselves to being
readaloudinaliturgicalseng,andtheuseofwrien
versions of the Scripturesin the form of personal
missals,andpreprintedsheetshadtheiroriginsina
me when the Scriptures were proclaimed using a
languageotherthanthatusedinnonChurchsengs.

The proclamaon of the Sacred Scriptures during our

liturgy is an invitaon to listen to the voice of God as
Godspeakstous.

For that reason, the weekly readings from the Sacred

Scriptures will no longer form part the weekly parish
bullen. They will connue to be included as a
separate insert unl the current subscripon to this
serviceexpires.

Instead,thebullenwillincludethereferencestothis
weeks and next weeks Scripture readings (see the
back page). The text of the Responsorial Psalm will
also be found on the back page so that we can
connuetopraythePsalmaswecurrentlydo.

For those parishioners who may wish to connue to

useaprintedversionoftheweeklyreadingstofollow
the Liturgy of the Word, the current edion of the
personal missals contain the current readings
(although not the new prayers) while it is hoped that
new personal missals will be available in March or
April.

Apart from encouraging an acve engagement with

theproclamaonoftheScriptures,theremovalofthe
weekly readings from the bullen will allow more
roomfortheinclusionofothermaterialinthevacated
space. Fr Andrew
