1. Christmas is a Historical Event Legends and myths have no historical particularity. You cannot ever say that they really happened. You cannot place them, nor can you often assert that nothing like it ever did happen. But Christianity is different; it is firmly placed in the latitude and longitude of real time and is a verifiable part of human history. Luke tells us that Jesus Christ was born: During Caesar Augustus reign (27 BC to 14 AD) He ordered three census in his 41 year reign 28 BC, 8 BC and 14 AD Summary Truth 1: that you may have certainty concerning the things you have been taught.(Luke 1: 3,4) 2. Christmas was Foretold The Christmas was not a bolt from the blue but was predicted in Scripture centuries before it happened. Luke alludes to these predictions in his accounting of Jesus birth: 5 then God will establish one of Davids a) Joseph was a descendant of King David descendants as king. Yet Nazareth of Galilee, Augustus census a ruler of Israel will come from you, one whose ensured that Jesus was born in origins are from the distant past. Micah 5:2 Bethlehem in Judea. (NLT) 14 All right then, the Lord himself will give c) The Messiah was born of a virgin (vs 5 you the sign. Look! The virgin will conceive a cf. Luke 1:26,27) child! She will give birth to a son and will call him Immanuel (which means God is with us). Isaiah 7:14 (NLT)
Summary truth 2: But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons - Gal 4:4-5 (ESV)
3. a) Before the first Christmas only the High Priest amongst all Jews could enter Holy of Holies, and only once in a year, on the day of atonement. b) Gentiles were totally forbidden from entering the Temple: No foreigner is to enter the balustrade enclosure around the temple and whoever is caught will have himself to blame for his death will follow. (Notice engraved on perimeter wall of temple discovered by archeologist Leen Ritmeyer) Summary Truth 3: But the first Christmas changed that too (John 3:16,17) 4. Christmas is Gods Gift of His Ever-enduring Peace to Us a) A peace that gives hope to the desperate The leper in Luke 5:12 Lord if you are willing u can make me clean. >> Of course I am willing. Be clean Go in Peace. b) A peace that comes from the forgiveness of sins Luke 7 A sinful woman anoints Jesus at Simon the Pharisees house. >> Your sins are forgiven. Your faith has saved you. Go in Peace. c) A Peace that comes from knowing that in Jesus there is a power over death >> Luke 7 Jesus raises a widows son in the town of Nain >> Young man I say to you get up. To the woman dont cry take your son. Go in Peace. d) A Peace that comes from knowing that through Jesus we belong to God Summary Truth 4: John 6:38-40 A wonderful one verse commentary that completely summarizes what Christmas is all about is 1 Timothy 1:15: "Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners--of whom I am the worst". Conclusion Isaiah 9:6-7 [6] Forto us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. [7] Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David's throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. ... Merry Christmas
