Background
The use of gabions as an effective solution to combat erosion and to stabilise and strengthen embankments has been in evidence for several centuries. Rivers, coasts, roads and railways can all be subject to continuous or fluctuating erosion, demanding planned defences which counteract the forces involved. Welded-mesh gabion systems are used in many modern civil engineering schemes to provide an economic and effective solution. They are manufactured from welded wire mesh and can be quickly erected and filled without special skills or machinery, thereby keeping costs to a minimum. As with any other civil engineering material, the life span and integrity of any structure depends on many factors including the design, the workmanship, the supervision and the choice of materials. No single system can claim to meet all the conditions on every occasion but it has been proved that welded-mesh gabions, suitably treated or coated, offer an economic solution to many stabilisation and erosion problems. . When filled, welded-mesh units have sufficient flexibility to allow some movement and change in shape should subsidence or settlement occur, whilst retaining their strength and structural integrity. Gabion structures are naturally porous and do not normally require the incorporation of expensive drainage systems.
Cost-effective compared to traditional reinforced concrete wall construction Does not require specialised plant or expertise for installation Uses locally available rock fill, graded crushed concrete or site-won granular material Aesthetic appearance - natural stone finish or timber clad No special foundations normally required Suitable for both temporary and permanent structures
Product Range
Gabions The term gabion used in the text refers to both traditional welded-mesh box gabions and Concertainer gabions. The Concertainer range of systems is the next evolutionary step in the construction of walls through speed of installation. Welded mesh Box Gabions Welded mesh traditional box gabions are wire mesh baskets where the side, end and diaphragm panels are factory fitted to the base panel allowing them to fold flat. Welded mesh Concertainer Gabions Welded mesh Concertainer gabions are wire mesh baskets formed by connecting individual panels of mesh with helicals on the vertical edge wires creating an open series of box compartments that fold in a concertina fashion to be flat packed. Welded mesh Concertainer Bastions Welded mesh Concertainer bastions are formed similar to concertainer gabions but are factory lined internally with a nonwoven geotextile membrane to the perimeter mesh panels of the unit allowing for a selected granular soil fill to be used. Each main cell can be subdivided into one or more unlined cells at the face and/or side, normally 300mm wide to allow for a rock facing to the unit. Gabion-Mattstm Gabion-Mattstm are a cost-effective alternative to separate mattress and gabion units for river bank protection. The Gabion-Matttm from Gabion Solutions come in pre-assembled units for economy in construction and guaranteed continuity between the gabion facing and the mattress elements. Trapions Trapionstm are wire gabion cages that are trapezoidal in section to permit the easy construction of flush-faced (non-stepped) tapered walls. Trapionstm are used for architectural and similar applications where structural integrity combined with good visual appearance are required Weldmesh Mattresses Mattresses are prefabricated and supplied flat for ease of storage, transport and handling. They are available in sizes up to 6 x 2 x 0.3m.

Gabion Assembly
Assemble the gabion according to the gabion type Ensure foundations are as per the design Ensure all lacing is as per described Ensure filling sequence is adhered to Remember to correctly position the internal bracing Minimise voids or bridging of the fill during the filling operation Slightly over fill the gabion before securing the lid Keep strictly to the lacing procedure course to course
Protective Coatings
Two coating options are readily available: 1. Bezinal Bezinal is a zinc-aluminium alloy surface coating which can offer up to t hre e ti mes the cor ros ion resistance of conventional galvanised coatings. 2. Chemically bonded PVC on zinc coated wire to BS 443 Suitable for aggressive environments, this composite coating can provide a design life of up to 120 years in non-aggressive environments. Canals
Weldmesh Gabion Systems are suitable for the restoration and maintenance of canals where they not only provide permanent bank and bed reinforcement but also provide protection against wave damage from the increasing use of powered leisure craft.
Reservoirs
Weldmesh Gabions, Gabion-Matts and Mattresses are highly suitable for the creation and maintenance of reservoirs where they can be used to conserve and protect natural shorelines, resisting erosion by wind and wave action.
