A. Summary of the Lesson Plan: This Geography lesson is designed for 4th grade students to learn the difference between Nevadas human and physical features. This lesson uses resources found on the Internet and pages 6-17 in the Nevada (From Sea to Shining Sea) book. B. Target Population: Grade Level: 4th Grade Skill Level: Students at all learning levels Grouping: Whole group discussion, group work and individual assessment C. Materials: Social Studies Journals Nevada (From Sea to Shining Sea) book Physical/Human Features pictures Blank map of Nevada
D. Objectives: o NV State Social Studies Standards o G5.4.3 Construct a map of Nevada displaying human and physical features.
Student-Friendly Standards I can make a map of Nevada that shows human and physical features.
E. Procedure: 1. Engage- The students will be put into equal groups and will be given 10 different pictures. The only instructions I will give them will be to sort the pictures into two categories and make a list identifying which each picture is of. After all the groups are finished we will have a class discussion on how each group sorted the pictures and why, 2. Next we will discuss and define the terms physical and human features, and the students will write these definitions in their Social Studies journals. Then we will discuss the two groups that they should have sorted them into i.e. physical and human features. We will also discuss whether they identified the pictures correctly on their lists. 3. After the whole group discussion I will explain that the students are going to work individually. They will be labeling 3 physical and 3 human features of Nevada on a blank map of Nevada. They can use their Nevada (Sea to Shining Sea) books, Internet resources or other books about Nevada that we have in the classroom.

4. CLOSURE: After putting all the supplies away we will come back to a whole class discussion in which they can share the map they made if they want to and then I will ask questions like: o o What was the hardest part about this activity Which features did you choose to put on your map and why?
We will then close by the collection of papers and me restating that they should remember the differences between physical and human features in Nevada. F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? I will use the map-making activity to measure student understanding. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. I will know whether students understand the concepts from the lesson by grading their activities. Depending on their grades I will be able to determine whether they understood or not. G. Reflection: 1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? I think the easiest part of the lesson will be teaching the students the difference between physical and human features. 2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? I think the most difficult part will be teaching the students how to find the different features. 3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? I would extend this lesson by having students do a group project on the different human/physical features of Nevada. 4. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? If a student doesnt grasp the concept I will pair them with a higher-level student. I will also check in on them as they are working on the activity. 5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change? I may need to change the opening activity and make it a whole class activity if the students dont understand/ recognize differences in the features. 6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part?

The most difficult part of writing this lesson was finding physical features that the students would recognize.
