Digital Journalism

As media migrate to digital platforms, this has created a need for an array of multi-skilled jobs that range from the traditional storytelling in newspapers and magazines to the very contemporary roles of videographer and web producer.

Thinking about a career in journalism? UWindsor offers a combined honours journalism degree that is unique in Canada. You will learn the theoretical perspectives and technical skills to compete in the rapidly changing, digital marketplace Our objective is to produce journalists who can find work in mainstream, alternative and citizen media.

UWindsors Digital Journalism program unites journalism theory, ethics and skills education with academic specialization. You can take Digital Journalism in one of four combinations: 1) English Language and Literature 2) English and Creative Writing 3) Communication, Media and Film 4) Political Science

What You Will Take First Year
In first year, you will take Journalism Today and Reporting Fundamentals in the fall semester, and Collaborative Studio Lab I - The Job in the winter semester. The remaining courses will be selected from whichever co-major discipline you select. For more information on Digital Journalism courses, please consult the UWindsor undergraduate calendar.

Financial Aid
In addition to the University's entrance awards, some students qualify for the Outstanding Scholars Program, which matches excellent students with top researching professors. In their first year, candidates receive $750 per semester. Outstanding Scholar Candidates meet regularly and are mentored throughout first year. To qualify to compete for entrance into the Outstanding Scholars program, candidates must achieve a minimum of 85% at the end of first year. Students who enter the Outstanding Scholars program in second year will work closely with faculty on academic research projects. They will also receive an honorarium of $1,500 per semester. Experiential Learning
Our program includes Collaborative Studio Labs in each of the four yearshands-on, problem-solving workshops taught by faculty and media professionals. From first year, you will also have the chance to practise and refine your skills by working for on-campus publications, local media and internships. In third year, you will benefit from the incredible opportunity to operate your own digital newsroom.

Admission Requirements
The OSS Diploma and six Grade 12 U or M courses, including ENG4U, are required. Students must have a minimum average of 75%. Digital Journalism requires an interview and a writing sample or a video project.
