Violets in Bloom

Materials

2. Sew two dark purple triangles, a 2 " light green square and a light purple triangle together as shown to make a block corner unit. Make 4.

3. As shown below, arrange: the units from steps 1 and 2; (4) dark purple, (12) dark green, (17) light green, and (12) cream print 2 " squares; and (4) 2 " x 7 " dark purple pieces. Stitch the patches together to complete Block A.

Cutting

From the oral print, cut: (10) 7 " strips. Cut (3) 7 " x 7 " squares from each of two strips. Reserve the unused portion of these strips and the remaining full strips for the outer border. From the dark purple, cut: (4) 3 " strips. Cut (12) 3 " x 3 " squares from each strip. Cut each square in half on the diagonal to make two triangles. (9) 2 " strips. Recut into (24) 2 " x 7 " pieces and (48) 2 " x 2 " squares. (9) 2 " strips for the binding. (8) 1 " strips. Cut (24) 1 " x 1 " squares from each strip. From the cream print, cut: (2) 3 " strips. Cut (12) 3 " x 3 " squares from each strip. Cut each square in half on the diagonal to make two triangles. (11) 2 " strips. Recut into (24) 2 " x 7 " pieces and (72) 2 " x 2 " squares. (12) 1 " strips. Recut into (24) 1 " x 11 " pieces and (96) 1 " x 1 " squares. From the brown, cut: (8) 2 " strips for the inner border. (12) 1 " strips. Recut into (24) 1 " x 11 " pieces and (96) 1 " x 1 " squares. From the light green, cut: (8) 2 " strips. Recut into (102) 2 " x 2 " squares. (6) 1 " strips. Recut into (48) 1 " x 2 " pieces and (48) 1 " x 1 " squares. From the dark green, cut: (6) 2 " strips. Recut into (72) 2 " x 2 " squares. (14) 1 " strips. Recut into (48) 1 " x 2 " pieces and (240) 1 " x 1 " squares. From the light purple, cut: (2) 5 " strips. Cut (6) 5 " x 5 " squares from each strip. Cut each square in half on the diagonal to make two triangles. (11) 2 " strips. Recut into (144) 2 " x 2 " squares.

(All strips are cut across the width of the fabric from selvage edge to selvage edge.)

4. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of (2) light and (2) dark 1 " green squares. Right sides together layer a square of each color in opposite corners of a 2 " light purple square. Sew on the marked lines. Trim 1/4" beyond the seam lines. Press the triangles out. Repeat for the remaining corners. Repeat this procedure to make (24) light and dark green units and (96) dark green and dark purple units.

5. As shown below, arrange: the units from step 4; a 7 " oral print square; (8) light and (8) dark green 1 " x 2 " pieces; (16) 1 " cream print and (16) 1 " brown squares; (4) 2 " dark purple squares; (4) 2 " x 7 " cream print pieces; and (4) 1 " x 11 " brown and (4) 1 " x 11 " cream print pieces. Stitch the patches together to complete Block B.

6. Repeat steps 1-3 and steps 4 and 5 to make a total of (6) Block A and (6) Block B.

Quilt Assembly and Finishing


1. Arrange the blocks into (4) rows of (3) blocks each. Sew the blocks into rows. Sew the rows together to complete the body of the quilt top. 2. Trim the selvages from the 2 " brown strips. Sew the strips together end to end to make a long 2 " strip. From this long strip, cut (2) 81 " long and (2) 65 " long pieces (if your measurements are dierent, cut to t your quilt top). Sew a longer piece to the left and right-hand sides of the quilt top. Sew a shorter piece to the top and bottom of the quilt top. 3. Trim the selvages from the 7 " oral print strips. Sew the strips together end to end to make a long strip. From this long strip, cut (2) 86" long and (2) 79 " long pieces (if your measurements are dierent, cut to t your quilt top). Sew a longer piece to the left and right-hand sides of the quilt top. Sew a shorter piece to the top and bottom to complete the quilt top. 4. Layer the completed quilt top with batting and backing and quilt as desired. Bind using the 2 " dark purple strips. 2009 AE Nathan Co.

Sewing

(All seams are sewn with a seam allowance, right sides together and raw edges even.)

1. Sew a cream print triangle to a dark purple triangle to make a pieced square. Make 8.
