WHEN & WHERE 8.30 am5.00pm Monday 29 October 8.30 am5.00pm Tuesday 30 October 8.30 am12.00pm Wednesday 31 October Sudima Hotel 18 Airpark Drive Mangere Auckland INTRODUCTION As part of its 2012 professional development programme, the EEA, in conjunction with the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) School of Electrical and Electronic Systems Engineering, are pleased to offer a course on Power and Distribution Transformers. The QUT is located in Brisbane and has developed a series of competency-based courses and programs for electrical engineers in the power industry. The academic staff of the QUT power systems programme are working in areas such as power system analysis, line design, cables, power electronics and renewable energy. There are already a number of power engineers in New Zealand involved in the QUT courses and the EEA is pleased to be a partner in this initiative. The EEA has a strong commitment to the professional development of its members and engineers/technical staff working in the NZ power industry OVERVIEW This module covers the basic principles of transformer design, construction and testing found in electric power transmission and distribution substations. Power distribution and large industrial companies are involved in the construction and maintenance of substations with transformers being an integral component. Staff managing or purchasing these critical assets require an understanding of transformer design and performance characteristics.

COURSE OBJECTIVES This module is aimed at introducing you to the basic concepts of transformer design and testing criteria required for a transmission or distribution system. COURSE CONTENT On completion of this module you should be able to: Explain basic transformer theory. Differentiate between various transformer types. Explain the relevant standards that apply to power transformers and distributions transformers. Explain the cost impact of various transformer parameters. Identify basic transformer design issues. Discuss basic transformer construction, installation, maintenance and transformer auxiliary. Analyse transformer test reports/results compared to performance requirements. Describe transformer condition assessment techniques. Analyse transformer manufacturing and testing by observations of industry processes, facilities and methods in action. PRESENTERRAY HOLZHEIMER Ray Holzheimer is a graduate holding a Bachelor of Engineering Electrical Power who currently works for Powerlink as a Senior Substation Field Support Engineer for Network Field Services. Ray has a passion for passing on his knowledge in the production of technical specifications, the design, manufacture, testing, and maintenance of HV plant. This includes power transformers, distribution transformers, series and shunt reactors, and other reactive plant. Ray has worked for a large transformer manufacturer in various positions for more than 15 years. He has held positions in other companies, responsible for the procurement, installation and maintenance of power transformers.

PRESENTERSTIM HART Tim Hart is an electrical engineer holding a Bachelor and Masters degree. Tim has a passion for passing on his knowledge of transformer and high voltage testing gained from operating a NATA certified test center processing large transformers and switchgear. He is currently employed by Energex Queensland where he is an Asset Manager responsible for the maintenance and expansion of the electrical distribution network in Brisbane Metropolitan North from the Brisbane river to Bribie Island out to Kilcoy. ASSESSMENT All course attendees will be issued with a certificate of attendance. Those wishing to gain greater proficiency must complete the QUT assessment requirements which are met by way of assignments. Course attendees are permitted up to two months to complete the assignments, but are encouraged to complete them as soon as possible. On completion of the course assessment, a QUT certificate of attainment will be issued. It may be possible for course results to be credited towards a QUT postgraduate qualification. The course is also an IPENZ accredited CPD course and attendance attracts CPD hours towards your total. COURSE NOTES A full set of course notes will be provided to each attendee at the beginning of the course. COURSE SIZE Course numbers are limited to 25 attendees and registrations will be accepted on a first come, first served basis, so please ensure that you dont miss out by registering promptly.
