Acts 2:1-11 (Epistle)

1 When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. 5 And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under heaven. 6 And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language. 7 Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, Look, are not all these who speak Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, each in our own language in which we were born? 9 Parthians and Medes and Elamites, those dwelling in Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya adjoining Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretans and Arabs we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God.

37 On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. 38 He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water. 39 But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. 40 Therefore many from the crowd, when they heard this saying, said, Truly this is the Prophet. 41 Others said, This is the Christ. But some said, Will the Christ come out of Galilee? 42 Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the seed of David and from the town of Bethlehem, where David was?
43 So there was a division among the people because of Him. 44 Now some of them wanted to take Him, but no one laid hands on Him. 45 Then the officers came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, Why have you not brought Him? 46 The officers answered, No man ever spoke like this Man! 47 Then the Pharisees answered them, Are you also deceived? 48 Have any of the rulers or the Pharisees believed in Him? 49 But this crowd that does not know the law is accursed. 50 Nicodemus (he who came to Jesus by night, being one of them) said to them, 51 Does our law judge a man before it hears him and knows what he is doing? 52 They answered and said to him, Are you also from Galilee? Search and look, for no prophet has arisen out of Galilee. 12 Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.

Christ is in our midst!

As we celebrate once again the Great Feast of Pentecost, we commemorate the Descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and the Birth of our Holy Church. And, in celebrating this milestone event in salvation history, we do well to recall from the pages of the Scripture what the Church is and what it means for us to be a member of the Church. In Saint Pauls Epistle to the Ephesians, the Apostle teaches us clearly the meaning of the Church and the meaning of membership in it. And, the Holy Fathers ~ Saint John Chrysostom and Saint Gregory of Nyssa ~ in their commentaries on this famous letter of Paul, explain clearly for us the patristic understanding. First, Paul tells us that the Church established by Christ and to which the Spirit gave birth is one Church: There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism: one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. (Ephesians 4: 4-6) In his commentary on this passage, Chrysostom tells us that, for this reason is the Spirit given, that He might unite those who are separated by race and different manners; for old and young, poor and wealthy, child and adolescent, woman and man, and every soul become in a manner one, and more entirely so than if there were one body. Now what is that one

body? The faithful throughout the inhabited world, both which are, and which have been, and which shall also be. Saint Paul goes on to tell us that the reality of the Church is people, men and women who are energized by the Holy Spirit: To each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christs gift. (Ephesians 4:7) What this means is that we are not all given the same gifts, but together as the Church we are equipped to do Gods will. Saint John explains that gifts are bestowed not for the honor of one above the other, but for the work of the Church for the building up of the Body of Christ. The Apostle goes on to say that the head of the Church is none other than Christ Himself: speaking the truth in love, we may grow up in all things into Him Who is the head Christ from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love. (Ephesians 4:15-16) Saint Paul also makes clear that each member of the Church is a new person: No longer walk alienated from the life of God but put off concerning your former conduct according to the deceitful lusts, the old man and be renewed in the spirit of your mind (and) let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members of one another. (Ephesians 4:18-25) Finally, a close study of Saint Pauls epistles shows that not just any assembly of individuals but, in a strict sense, only the Eucharistic assembly is called ekklesia or the Church. For the Apostle the Church is the Body of Christ, and those are its members who share in Communion in the Body of Christ -- those who partake of the Holy Eucharist, Christs own Body and Blood. For him, to reject the Eucharistic assembly is to despise the very Church of God. Our Holy Church, then, is clearly the People of God; new persons baptized in Christ and Chrismated in the Spirit and united in the Holy Eucharist, who form the One Body whose Head is our Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ Himself. On this Great Feast of Pentecost, the Descent of the Holy Spirit and the Birthday of the Church, let us recommit ourselves in the faith and service of Christs Holy Church. Let us rejoice that God has called us to be His fellow workers. (1 Corinthians 3:9) Let us focus on finding, and fulfilling, our role and our part in the Body of Christ. This is the holy work in which God has invited us to assist Him. Let us build up Christs Body, unto the glory of Almighty God -- not just for today, but until He comes again.
