INTRODUCTION
1

This tasks is about standard statistics. As we know, statistics is the study of data or information. It consist of collecting, recording, organizing, displaying and analyzing these data. Statistics is also a mathematical science pertaining to the collection, analysis, interpretation or explanation, and presentation of data. Statisticians improve the quality of data with the design of experiments and survey sampling. Statistics also provides tools for prediction and forecasting using data and statistical models. Statistics is applicable to a wide variety of academic disciplines,

including natural and social sciences government, and business. Statistical methods can be used to summarize or describe a collection of data; this is called descriptive statistics. This is useful in research, when communicating the results of experiments. In addition, patterns in the data may bemodeled in a way that accounts for randomness and uncertainty in the observations, and are then used to draw inferences about the process or population being studied; this is called inferential statistics. Inference is a vital element of scientific advance, since it provides a prediction (based in data) for where a theory logically leads. To further prove the guiding theory, these predictions are tested as well, as part of the scientific method. If the inference holds true, then the descriptive statistics of the new data increase the soundness of that hypothesis. Descriptive statistics and inferential statistics (a.k.a., predictive statistics) together comprise applied statistics.

There is also a discipline called mathematical statistics, which is concerned with the theoretical basis of the subject. The word statistics can either be singular or plural. In its singular form, statistics refers to the mathematical science discussed in this article. In
2

its plural form, statistics is the plural of the word statistic, which refers to a quantity (such as a mean) calculated from a set of data. When all the data are collected, they have to be recorded systematically. This makes it is easier to display and understand the data. Then from the systematic data, we can convey it into a graph. A graph is a collection of nodes connected by edges. A graph is also frequently called a network, a node may be called a vertex, and an edge may be called a link. Commonly, a graph is denoted by an ordered pair G = (V,E), where V is the set of nodes and E is the set of edges.Edges are the abstraction of some kind of relation between nodes, e.g. similarity, vicinity, communication, etc. We can distinguish directed and undirected edges. From other view, graph is a large sets of data more meaningful to the viewer and the graph also have a numerical basis. The data that we collected are plot into list of variable with the proper structure for our desired graph type.

TASK 1: STRENGTH AND WEAKNESS OF THE TYPE OF GRAPH. BAR GRAPH DEFINITION
3

A bar chart or bar graph is a chart with rectangular bars with proportional to the values that they represent. Bar charts are used for comparing two or more values that were taken over time or on different conditions, usually on small data sets. The bars can be horizontally oriented (also called bar chart) or vertically oriented (also called column chart). Sometimes a stretched graphic is used instead of a solid bar. It is a visual display used to compare the amount or frequency of occurrence of different characteristics of data and it is used to compare groups of data.

A graph drawn using rectangular bars to show how large each value is. These graphs are probably most popular and most widely used graph types. Bar graphs allow a graphical representation of data in different categories or groups. The bars can be horizontal or vertical. The length of a bar represents the numerical amount for a given point.

A bar graph displays discrete data in separate columns. A double bar graph can be used to compare two data sets. Categories are considered unordered and can be rearranged alphabetically, by size, etc.

Example 1 1. The total number of students taking bus according to their grade.

Retrieved 2 September 2009 at http://www.swiftchart.com/examplebar.htm The strength of this graph:1. This graph has title. Title is important for each graph to show the information and to understand what the content of the graph is. 2. It is easy for us when want to compare with other data sets which is found in this graph. 3. The scale of the number in y-axis is suitable, easy to read and find the total of quantity. 4. It is easy for us to know the highest and lowest number in graph.

The weakness of this graph:1. 2. The example of bar graph use only with discrete data without conclusion. The bars use only one colours so it is hard to differentiate.
5

3.

There is lack space for text labeling at the foot of each bar. Example 2 2. The number of students in a school from 1995 to 2002.

The strength of this graph:-

1. It is easy for us when want to compare with other data sets which is found in this graph and this graph difference colours between bars. 2.The scale of the number in y-axis is suitable, easy to read and find the total of quantity. 3. It is easy for us to know the highest and lowest number in graph. The weakness of this graph:1. The example of bar graph use only with discrete data without conclusion. 2. Dont have a title. 3. 4. Sometime, the scale is not match with the number for each data. There is lack space for text labeling at the foot of each bar.

PICTOGRAPH
7

DEFINITION Pictograph is a way of representing statistical data using symbolic figures to match the frequencies of different kinds of data. A pictograph (also called pictogram or pictogramme) is an ideogram that conveys its meaning through its pictorial resemblance to a physical object. Earliest examples of pictographs include ancient or prehistoric drawings or paintings found on rock walls. Pictographs are also used in writing and graphic systems in which the characters are to considerable extent pictorial in appearance. A pictogram is a symbol representing a concept, object, activity, place or event by illustration. Pictography is a form of writing whereby ideas are transmitted through drawing. It is a basis of cuneiform and, to some extent, hieroglyphs, which uses drawings also as phonetic letters or determinative rhymes. Early written symbols were based on pictograms (pictures which resemble what they signify) and ideograms (pictures which represent ideas). They were used by the ancient Chinese culture since around 5000 BC and began to develop into logographic writing systems around 2000 BC. Pictograms are still in use as the main medium of written communication in some non-literate cultures in Africa, The Americas, and Oceania. Pictograms are often used as simple symbols by most contemporary cultures.

Example 1 1. The value of favorite school lunch by students.

Retrieved 3 September 2009 at http://www.icoachmath.com/ mathematics/pictograph/ Pictograph.html The strength of this pictograph :1. The pictograph is easy to read. The key for a pictograph tells the number that each picture or symbol represents. 2. Pictographs also are fun to use. A lot of fun and coloured pictures or symbols can be used to present the data and make it interesting to use. 3. The scale that is use to present the quantity is suitable and easy to count. 4. Have a title to give first idea.
9

The weakness of this pictograph :1. The writings is not all standard. Example 2 2. The favourite colour which is choose by students.

Retrieved 3 September 2009 at http://www.icoachmath.com/mathematics/pictograph/ Pictograph.html

The strength of this pictograph :10

1. The pictograph is easy to read. The key for a pictograph tells the number that each picture or symbol represents. 2. Pictographs also are eassy to be differenciate. A lot colours are used to present the data. 3. The scale that is use to present the quantity is suitable and easy to count. 4. Have a title to give first idea. The weakness of this pictograph :1. The symbols that are used are not interesting. 2. The key on the pictograph can be confusing to read. The key should match with the amount of data.

11

PIE CHART DEFINITION A pie chart (or a circle graph) is a circular chart divided into sectors, illustrating relative magnitudes or frequencies. In a pie chart, the arc length of each sector (and consequently its central angle and area), is proportional to the quantity it represents. Together, the sectors create a full disk. It is named for its resemblance to a pie which has been sliced. While the pie chart is perhaps the most ubiquitous statistical chart in the business world and the mass media, it is rarely used in scientific or technical publications. It is one of the most widely criticized charts, and many statisticians recommend to avoid its use altogether, pointing out in particular that it is difficult to compare different sections of a given pie chart, or to compare data across different pie charts. Pie charts can be an
12

effective way of displaying information in some cases, in particular if the intent is to compare the size of a slice with the whole pie, rather than comparing the slices among them. Pie charts work particularly well when the slices represent 25 or 50% of the data, but in general, other plots such as the bar chart or the dot plot, or non-graphical methods such as tables, may be more adapted for representing information. A pie chart displays data as a percentage of the whole. Each pie section should have a label and percentage. A total data number should be included.

Example 1 1. The number of pets in housing area.

Retrieved 2 September 2009 at http://www.statcan.ca/english/edu/power/ ch9/piecharts/pie.htm The strength of this pie chart :13

1. Used colourful colours and make easy to differencetiate. The weakness of this pie chart :1. It is more difficult to understand the message behind because there are no percentage/ numbers figures given for each slice of the pie. 2. A pie chart is not a good format for showing increases and decreases, numbers in each category, or direct relationships between numbers where one set of numbers depend on another. 3. Dont have a title to give first idea and dont have labels. 4. Dont have keys/clues to show. Example 2 2. The percentage of the favourite film in class PPISMP 3B.

14

Retrieved 2 September 2009 at http://www.statcan.ca/english/edu/power/ ch9/piecharts/pie.htm The strength of this pie chart :1. The legend is formatted properly and the percentages are included for each of the pie segments. 2. Pie chart is liable to change. We can add more information into pie charts by inserting figures into each segment of the chart, or by giving a separate table as a reference. 3. Have difference colours so it easy to differencetiate it. Also have a clues to help. 4. Pie chart gives a quick overall impression of results. The result shows in percentage to make the data clearly. The weakness of this pie chart : 1. Although in a difference colours, the pie chart is not very interesting and the colours are quite the same. 2. A pie chart is not a good format for showing increases and decreases, numbers in each category, or direct relationships between numbers where one set of numbers depend on another. 3. Dont have a title to give first idea.

15

LINE GRAPH DEFINITION In a graph theory, the line graph L(G) of an undirected graph G is another graph L(G) that represents the adjacencies between edges of G. The line graph is also sometimes called the edge graph, the adjoins graph, the interchange graph, or the derived graph of G. One of the earliest and most important theorems about line graphs is due to Hassler Whitney (1932), who proved that with one exceptional case the structure of G can be recovered completely from its line graph. In other words, with that one exception, the entire graph can be deduced from knowing the adjacencies of edges ("lines").

16

A line plot can be used as an initial record of discrete data values. The range determines a number line which is then plotted with X's for each data value.

A line graph plots continuous data as points and then joins them with a line. Multiple data sets can be graphed together, but a key must be used. This graph was used to represent changes in data over a period of time.

The data is first represented by points. Line segments are drawn to join the points. The horizontal axis (x-axis) is used as the time axis and the vertical axis (y-axis) is used to show the changes in the other quantity.

Example 1 Figure 1 is a single line graph comparing two items; in this instance, time is not a factor. The graph compares the number of dollars donated by the age of the donors. According to the trend in the graph, the older the donor, the more money he or she donates. The 17-year-old donors donate, on average, $84. For the 19-year-olds, the average donation increased by $26 to make the average donation of that age group $110. Figure show the average number of dollars donated at Johns High School, by age of donor.

17

Retrieved 2 September 2009 at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Line_graph The strength of this line graph :1. Shows the highest and lowest number of data. 2. Students can analysis of data quickly based on the line graph given. 3. Have a title to give first idea. The weakness of this line graph : 1. Used a big range of data in this graph. 2. It is easily manipulated to yield false impressions. 3. It failed to provide a check of the accuracy or reasonableness of calculations. 4. Dont have an accurate scale. Example 2

18

Figure show the number of guilty crime offenders, Kuala Lumpur.

Retrieved 2 September 2009 at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Line_graph The strength of this line graph :1. Shows the highest and lowest number of data. 2. Show the summarise of large data set in visual formed. 3. Have a title ti give first idea The weakness of this line graph : 1. Use very big range of data in this graph. 2. It is easily manipulated to yield false impressions. 3. It failed to provide a check of the accuracy or reasonableness of calculations. 4. Dont have an accurate scale or data. 5. The graph is not easy to read because of the scale and the line plot is not the same
19

HISTOGRAM DEFINITION The histogram is a summary graph showing a count of the data points falling in various ranges. The effect is a rough approximation of the frequency distribution of the data. The groups of data are called classes and in the context of a histogram they are known as bins, because one can think of them as containers

20

that accumulate data and "fill up" at a rate equal to the frequency of that data class. Example 1 UTUSAN Newspaper Sales Sales are in Thousands of Papers Sold per Day

Retrieved 3 September 2009 at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Histogram This newspaper typically sold about 100,000 copies per day. Sales between 90,000 and 110,000 were quite frequent. For this sample of 70 days sales, the smallest number of newspapers sold was about 70,000 and the largest is about 150,000. There were an unusually large number of newspapers sold one day. The day on which 150,000 newspapers were sold is a typical.

21

Finally, due to the atypical large value, the histogram is slightly skewed to the right, or positively skewed. Without this value, the histogram would be reasonably symmetric.

The strength of this histogram :1. It is visually strong and can compare to normal curve. 2. Comparing data or interpreting information is improving. 3. We can get the highest and the lowest value of data, also the data value which is equally value. The weakness of this histogram :1. It is more difficult to compare with two data sets. 2. No label of days on the graph. 3. It only can be used with continuous data. 4. Dont have an appropriate scale or data.

Example 2

22

Retrieved 3 September 2009 at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Histogram This plot represents data with a well-defined peak that is close in value to the median and the mean. While there are "outlyers," they are of relatively low frequency. Thus it can be said that deviations in this data group from the mean are of low frequency. If this were a mass plot in particle physics, we'd say the mass is understood with good precision. The strength of this histogram :1. It is visually strong and can compare to normal curve. 2. Comparing data or interpreting information is improving. 3. We can get the highest and the lowest value of data, also the data value which is equally value.

23

4. Also have quite a good scale and easy undertanding The weakness of this histogram :1. It is more difficult because dont have certain title and clues 2. There are no label on the graph.

24

TASK 2: CONDUCT A SURVEY INTRODUCTION For this semester, course work of Basic Mathematics is about to conduct a survey on any issue or point of interest to gain experience on collecting and organizing data from any information which is get from the survey. For this course work, our group was decided to conduct a survey of the most preferring fast food restaurant by student of IPGM: Kampus Bahasa Melayu (IPGM: KBM). This is because from our observation, every time student of IPGM: KBM outing in weekend they were choose fast food restaurant like KFC, Mc Donald and Pizza Hut in having a lunch or dinner. They were also spend long time in that restaurant although they were already finished their meal. In this case, we choose this situation to conduct our survey. For this survey, we target group of PPISMP Semester 3 especially 3A and 3B group. We choose 40 respondents randomly in doing this survey. Perhaps we get a good result to analysis the data.

25

OBJECTIVE AND PURPOSE The main objective by doing this survey is to determine which fast food restaurant that students of PPISMP Semester 3 most prefer when they are outing. Besides that, we also want to determine how many students prefer fast food restaurant that are specified. For example, when they prefer to go there and with whom that students prefer to go with. Other than that, we also wants to know what is the time that choices by student when they are go there and how long they spend their time over there. In addition, by doing this survey, we want to determine why they are prefer that fast food restaurant. Maybe, they choose that restaurant because it cheap, delicious, or interesting. We conduct this survey too because we want to know if they are outing in weekend, it is easy for us to find them in shopping complex, example Mid Valley if there is lunch time or dinner time.

EXAMPLE OF QUESTIONAIRE

DATA ANALYSIS 1. Fast food restaurant that most prefer by students.

Restaurant Total Percentage (%)

KFC 24 60

Mc Donald 6 15

Pizza Hut 4 10

Others 6 15

29

From the graph above, KFC Restaurant shows the highest choice which is 24. Mc Donald and other restaurants get the same value that is 6 while Pizza Hut Restaurant gets the lowest choice that is 4. So, we can conclude here that most of PPISMP Semester 3s students choose KFC Restaurant as their fast food when they are outing. From the graph above, we also can conclude here that the mode of this graph is 24 which are KFC. Mode = KFC

Restaurant KFC Mc Donald Pizza Hut Others

Male 12 6 2 1

Female 12 0 2 5

30

Based on the graph, we can see that the quantity of student according to their gender that preferring KFC and Pizza Hut is equally. Meanwhile all of 6 male students preferring Mc Donald and there is no female students that is prefer Mc Donald as their chosen. 6 more students prefer another fast food restaurant which is one male student and 5 female students. From that survey too, we can find some information of statistical measures about average age among student PPISMP 3A and 3B because in this survey, we also get the age data of students. 1. Median =19,19,19,19,19,19,19,19,19,19,19,19,19,19,19,19,19,19,19,19,19,19,19,19, 19,19,19,20,20,20,20,20,20,20,20,20,21,21,21,21 = 19

2. Mode = 19

3. Range = 21-19 =2
31

2. When students prefer to go there?

Days Quantity Percentage (%)

Everyday 3 7.5

Weekend 14 35

School Holiday 23 57.5

DAY EVERYDAY WEEKEND SCHOOL HOLIDAY

QUANTITY

Represent 2 students.

32

Pictograph above shows the quantity of students and days choose by students to go to the fast food restaurants. So, what we can see here, most of students choose school holidays as their suitable time to go to the fast food restaurants. From pictograph above: Mode of the student prefer to go there = School holiday

3. With whom that students prefers to go with?

Person Quantity Percentage (%)

Friends 28 70

Family 10 25

Alone 2 5

33

According to the pie chart above, 70% students prefer to go to the fast food restaurant with their friends while the percentage of students prefer their family and go alone is 25% and 5% respectively. Based on that pie chart, we can conclude that the mode of this chart is friends because friends get the highest percentage from students.

4. Times that students prefer to go there.

Time Quantity Percentage (%)

Morning 3 7.5

Afternoon 8 20

Evening 18 45

Night 11 27.5
34

From the line graph above, we can see that the students of PPISMP 3A and 3B likes going out to the fast food restaurant especially at evening, which is 18 students. Other than that, they also likes went out at the night because there have 11 students like going out at night. In the morning and afternoon, there is less students like to went out that is 3 students and 8 students respectively. In our opinion, students like to going out at evening and night because they likes outing at evening until night and do not want to involve in traffic jam. INFERENCE After finish analysis this survey, we can conclude that the inference based on objectives, the students of PPISMP Semester 3 especially PPISMP 3A and 3B, mostly prefer KFC as their fast food restaurant choices. This is because this fast food restaurant offered reasonable price which is cheapest than other fast food restaurants.
35

Besides that, they prefer it because the meal that served by KFC is delicious and interesting. Other than that, many students prefer to go to the fast food restaurant in school holiday because in school holiday, they are not busy with their studies and assignments. They also want to release their tension and enjoy their meals with enough time. They prefer school holiday too because they can spend a lot of times to have a lunch or dinner in fast food restaurant. This is because not all places have a fast food restaurant that they are want. Moreover, 70% of students like to go to the fast food restaurant with their friends. This is because most of them have the same average of age. So, while they are enjoy their meal, they can talk about anything with their friends such as their problem in study, gossip, personal life and others. Besides that, the students of PPISMP also like enjoy their fast food especially at evening and night. This happen because, this time is most suitable for them to went out because they do not need out at sunny day. Besides, when they go outing, they go to shopping first. After they done their shopping, they will be hungry and tired, so they want to have some meal for covered their energy. BIBLIOGRAPHY INTERNET Canada. (2006-08-11). Pie Chart. First of all, I would like to thanks to Allah SWT. because give me a good health to finish this tasks.I feel glad when I finished this task with the co-operation from my group members. Our group have to finished about the tasks about the solving in two weeks times. I also want to thanked to our Basic Mathematic teacher, Pn. Ramlah Bt. Ahmad for helping us in this tasks. I am very glad when I got this task because I can know about analysing graph and make surveys from this tasks.I also feel very satisfy because all of my team members give their co-operations in this tasks Our group had choose to do the simple work but with accurate information. When talk about the favourite part of this project, I mostly like when we divide the work among of each member. Then, individually, we need to search all the point for the tasks. We also use the internet to add more informations about the topic. As we know this task need to be done in group so we works together to make this task complete in time. strategic problem

After that we make a meeting to have discussion among the members. All the group member working well together. We dont have any problem while doing this tasks.I really enjoy working in group rather than individual. This tasks was really exciting because I can learn much about analysing graph and make surveys. But we also have some difficulties while doing this tasks like do not have enough time to do it because we got lot of assignment to do.Other than that, the task need to discuss with all the group member on the same place at the same time. We do not have much time to discuss
38

because everyone had to do their own assignment. So we had to make a time table to manage the discussion. My perceptions about solving problem has change becaue when I do this tasks, I can understand very well now compared to previous experiences. My suggestions for students working on this project next year to do well and dont do last minute because this will effect your study.I also felt that this project is good learning experience because it teach us how to discuss with team, and give us a lot of infomation. Some of the information we never know. Doing this tasks help us fullfill the objectives of this tasks. It make this tasks both easier and more effective. In conclusion, we should appreciate the knowledge and information that we gain especially in this tasks, we learn a lot about strategic problem solving.Thats all.Thank you.

MUHAMMAD AFIQ BN AHMAD 900610-14-5869 PPISMP 3B I am very happy have done my assignment that been hand over from my

beloved lecturer, Madam Ramlah Binti Ahmad This survey of this project is a quite interesting and has teach me many things. The starting of our survey make me very
39

happy and excited. It is because this my first time got survey that done in English. Ever the time that been given is not enough to us to complete it but the overall of our activities are very enjoying. But first time I started to do this survey , it is very hard and difficult to go through it. Because we do not know the quite real format of a survey. The favourite part that I like in creating this assignment is when we editing the important point and the data collected. It gives us to take thinking activities to find out the strength and weakness of every single part of graph. Im also very happy in our cooperation in working done our assignment. My partners and I play our role to discuss. And all of us work happily and this project is interesting because it teach us many things and give students to learn and discover how to write a survey about their activities. In this activities many thing that I have learn . I have learn how to find the strength and weakness in each of the questions, how to make question from it and it solution. So it was a good learning experience . these are because I had no experience on write and plan a survey before and now I have learn how to prepared it . Eventhough Ive done the task, but Ive to faced a lot of problem to done it. Im asking to my friend and my lecture how to do that task. After many time of discussion finally I have finished the task. Im feel so glad and happy when this assignment is finished. With this task, I can learn how to work in group kindly. It teaches us to find the free time and also suitable information in doing the tasks. We finally can learned how to be a good teacher in future. We need to give commitment and also helps each other in all situations. When the problem is coming, we can finally find the ways to solve it with high-level of patient. We need a lot of spirit to make sure our work done very well.

Alhamdulillah. Thank God, finally my course work finished already. There are a lot of things that I got by done this course work. I got a new experience by done this coursework because this semester the coursework about conducting a survey. Many
41

things that I learn for example how to collect the data, how to make graph and how to analyse the data. There are new things for me. Furthermore, this coursework get change my attitude. This is because, in making this coursework, it is need more patient especially when analyse the data. Sometimes, the data that we got was not accurate and we need to find another way to present it. Besides that, by doing this coursework, I learn more about Microsoft Office Excel. Before this, I am not too master in use this programme. But after finished my coursework, I can use Microsoft Office Excel without any problem. Not too master yet but at least I can use Microsoft Office Excel for another task. This is important because as a future teacher, we need to master anything and use what we have to our student. Finally, there are more benefit by doing this coursework because it give us more knowledge about mathematics, generally and type of graph, especially.

GROUP REFLECTION First of all, we would like to thanks to Allah SWT. because give me a good health to finish this tasks.
