Why wind?
As we consume more and more at one end of the spectrum, an enormous percentage of the world's population lacks access to energy to meet its most basic needs. Approximately 1.5 billion people do not have access to reliable and affordable energy supplies. For them there is no electricity for lights, everyday appliances to pump water or the equipment to attend to basic healthcare. Providing energy to those deprived will greatly enhance their quality of life and, in many cases, ensure survival. Food and water are the most basic human needs but energy is the enabler. Energy is an intrinsic part of every solution designed to improve quality of lives. One answer lies in the abundant and renewable natural resources the planet offers. Windmills date back to 600 AD. They were first used to grind grains. These early windmills evolved through the centuries and by the late 1800s they were widely used. A century and a half later, wind power has spread across the world. Commercial wind farms now operate in nearly 80 countries and provide increased energy security; stable power prices; and sustainable economic, ecological and social development bringing investment and hundreds of thousands of jobs. Wind power can significantly reduce dependence on imported fuels, which in turn improves air quality. Each megawatt (MW) installed can cut almost 1,700 tonnes of CO2 emissions every year. That's the equivalent to planting 85,000 trees. Wind energy has a key advantage over many other electricity generation sources. It is totally independent of fossil fuel price shocks and shortages. When we look at the big picture, wind scores even higher with none of the environmental impacts of conventional fuels. With rapid technological advances, the cost of wind power has dropped to nearly one-fifth of its cost in the 1980s. This trend will continue with next generation materials and ever-more efficient turbine designs. As policy makers look to develop power sources to meet the world's rapidly growing needs they have several choices to make to balance short-term costs and longerterm sustainability.
Wind is still to exercise even a fraction of its potential. Average annual global power consumption currently stands at 15* terawatt (TW). Global wind power capacity alone is 72** TW. Renewable energy is not only the solution to our depleting fossil fuels. It is also the way we can create a healthier planet and mitigate the perils of catastrophic climate change. Wind offers the opportunity to generate clean, sustainable power the world over, bringing energy security and improving the lives of people everywhere.

Offshore overview
Wind resources over the seas are immense. The potential to tap and convert that wind to energy is staggering. As the speed of offshore wind is much higher than it is onshore, the energy that can be generated from it is greater. It requires complex and cutting-edge technology, as well as supreme project construction and management skills, to install giant wind turbines onto the seabed. Offshore wind farms allow policymakers to develop large-scale renewable power production and meet renewable energy targets. The offshore market has grown rapidly in recent years and is expected to grow by a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of over 40 per cent between 2010 and 2015, to reach 26 GW of installed capacity by 2015*. Development of renewables in northern Europe is expected to be huge and offshore wind will constitute around 20 per cent of European wind power by 2015. The European offshore market will primarily be driven by projects in the UK and Germany. The two countries have extensive project pipelines and will account for around 50 per cent of new offshore installations until 2015. REpower, the Suzlon Group company with offshore expertise, is well positioned to exploit this wave of growth. REpower produces a 6.15 MW turbine, currently the largest commercially available turbine in the world. As more and more onshore wind sites become saturated and the demand for clean energy increases, more countries will develop offshore wind power installations.

Australia
REpower Australia and Suzlon Energy Australia combined operations in October 2011. The new entity, REpower Australia, is based in Melbourne and offers both REpower and Suzlon products and EPC services for the Australian and New Zealand markets. The Group employs more than 320 people in Australia, spread across its head offices, nine site offices and warehousing facilities in Jamestown, South Australia and Portland Region. China
China is the largest wind energy market in the world. In 2010, China added 16.5 GW of wind power, which is nearly 50 per cent of the annual global installation. With increasing domestic demand and a strong push by the Government, China has a renewable energy target of 15 per cent by 2020. Suzlon spotted this potential early and established Suzlon Energy (Tianjin) Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary, demonstrating the company's commitment to China. As a major international player, the Suzlon Group has exceeded 1.25 GW in signed contracts for the Chinese market. It also functions as a global export base, and provides overseas wind farm development services to its Chinese customers. REpower is represented in China by REpower North (China) Co. Ltd., headquartered at Baotou, in Inner Mongolia, and REpower Systems SE Beijing, which has the primary task of supporting REpower's Chinese licensees (Zheijiang Windey and Dongfang Steam Turbine Works), and organizing the delivery of components to China. It also integrates Chinese components into REpower technology and sources components from China tapping into the booming Chinese wind power market. Europe
The European wind energy market is highly evolved and one of the world's oldest wind energy markets. With strong policy support, most European countries have been keenly promoting renewable energy. Europe is also blessed with good onshore and very high offshore wind potential. Suzlon Wind Energy A/S is based in Aarhus, Denmark, and is responsible for Europe as a whole. Catering to the highly developed markets of central Europe, high growth markets of southern Europe and the emerging markets of eastern Europe, Suzlon is well placed here with installations mainly in Spain, Portugal, Italy, Turkey, Sweden, Bulgaria and Romania. The Group's lead player in this region is REpower Systems for whom this is its home market. With an impressive presence in more than 18 European countries, including sales offices in the UK, Spain, France, Italy, Portugal, Poland and Sweden, REpower is a leading player. A global leader in offshore wind turbine technology, REpower has a clear focus on markets with strong offshore potential. It has three manufacturing units in Germany at Trampe, Husum and Bremerhaven. North America
The USA is one of the largest wind energy market in the world with immense potential for future growth. Recent economic turbulence has temporarily slowed down the pace of growth here, but in the coming years this market is set to be one of the most robust in the world. Suzlon Wind Energy Corporation has over 2,500 MW of installed capacity in North America. When combined with REpower's capacity, the total installed base in North America becomes 3,400 MW. The Group's presence in the USA is through Suzlon and REpower. In the offshore-led market REpower has a solid footprint. Suzlon installed its first wind turbines in south-west Minnesota in 2004, which later became home to Suzlon's first blade manufacturing facility outside of India. Suzlon Wind Energy Corporation, the subsidiary headquartered in Chicago, has more than 70 wind projects across the United States. REpower Systems SE has wholly-owned subsidiaries REpower USA Corp., located in Denver, Colorado and REpower Systems Inc., located in Montreal, Canada, to cater for North America. Both companies were founded in 2007 to take advantage of the growing wind industry in the midwest and west of the United States and Canadian markets. The Group employs more than 530 people and has nearly 3,000 MW of installed capacity across North America. South America
After years of modest development in South and Central America, the tide seems to have turned and there is a steady increase in the installed wind capacity in the region. Brazil continues to lead, with 326 MW of new installations in 2010* (up 31 per cent from 2009), taking its cumulative capacity to 1,261 MW. Brazil has been the focus of attention in this region with Mexico and Chile also growing in significance. Since establishing operations in 2006, Suzlon Energia Elica do Brasil has grown to become Brazil's market leader, with more than a 40 per cent market share and a cumulative installed capacity of about 390 MW. It is strongly positioned in this market. It employs 170 and has sales offices in So Paulo and Rio de Janeiro and headquarters in Ceara. Brazil has a strong renewable-based energy matrix, of which more than 70 per cent comes from hydroelectric power plants. It also has more than 350 GW of onshore wind capacity. Suzlon is also present in Nicaragua with a wind farm at Amayo. It has a sales office in Chile catering to both that country and the developing markets of Mexico and Argentina. South Africa
South Africa is an emerging wind market with great potential. Suzlon has a wholly-owned subsidiary, Suzlon Wind Energy SA (SWESA), based in Johannesburg to meet this potential. A relatively new entrant to wind energy, South Africa is now implementing its first large scale renewable energy project. The country's integrated resource plan calls for 1,025 MW of renewable energy from independent power producers (IPPs) to be operational by 2013.

Renewable Energy Technology Centre The Renewable Energy Technology Centre (RETC GmbH) is a 50:50 joint venture between Suzlon Energy Ltd., (through its subsidiary SE Drive Technik GmbH), and REpower Systems SE. This Hamburg-based entity aims to combine forces and cooperate strategically in the field of research and technical training in wind energy for the future.
Blade Testing Facility Suzlon has established Asia's first state-of-the-art rotor blade testing facility in Vadodara, western India. It carries out a variety of wind turbine blade testing operations, including lifecycle tests and destructive tests. The only two other such facilities are at the TU-Delft University, The Netherlands and the US-federally run National Renewable Energy Laboratory, located in Colorado.
REpower REpower has R&D facilities across three locations in Germany at Hamburg, Osnabrck in Niedersachsen and Osterrnfeld in Schleswig-Holstein. The Osnabrck facility is part of REpower's development centre and works closely with the company's engineers in Osterrnfeld, focusing on performing load and dynamic simulations, of the REpower wind energy turbines. The TechCenter in Osterrnfeld, Schleswig-Holstein with 470 engineers focuses on research and development, technical support, and service to develop and optimise REpower turbines.

Quality management
Establishment of an independent Quality Management Organisation within Suzlon helped define a strategic roadmap. The goal is to move the organisation from quality control to quality excellence and ultimately to quality benchmarking. It seeks to induce a state of future readiness within the business. Quality Management's vision is for Suzlon to 'be a quality leader through technology and sustainable stakeholdercentric management'. In practice, quality management is well geared to Suzlon's strategic business growth, cultural bandwidth and manufacturing operations. Suzlon seeks to build a quality-driven organisation where customer focus is a way of life. With timely delivery, quality and product performance customers' expectations are met. This allows the business to instill confidence and forge longterm relationships.

Suzlon's product strategy is to focus on developing products customised to local geography, wind regimes and the individual needs of customers. Suzlon's current product range includes wind turbine generators with capacities from 600 kW to 6.15 MW. The S97 2.1 MW is the largest wind turbine manufactured in and exported from Asia. The REpower 6.15 MW offshore wind turbines is the largest commercially available in the world. It is the company's constant endeavour to make its wind turbines even more reliable and consistent to meet, or exceed, global availability standards. Suzlon already records uptime in excess of 97 per cent.

Suzlon has invested strategically in component as well as integrated turbine manufacturing facilities in India, Germany and the USA. The Group has a total manufacturing capacity of 5,300 MW. These locations were carefully chosen for their manufacturing-friendly policies and economic environment, easily available raw materials and skilled manpower. They each give Suzlon access to local expertise and knowledge and are close to key markets. As a result costs are optimised and logistics simplified.

CSR Outreach and impact Suzlon Foundation implements corporate social responsibility programmes at 52 locations in India. Working with 115,000 families so far, these programmes have improved the livelihoods of nearly 110,000 families. Suzlon has built social capital by supporting and strengthening 3,200 community-based organizations. Investments in educational interventions at 896 schools mean that more than 150,000 students are benefitting from better education. On the environmental front thousands of trees are added every year taking the total to more than a million trees planted. Due to our water conservation efforts, over 3,837,125 cubic meter water has been conserved so far.
CSR programmes aim to enhance the financial resources of local communities, through livelihood promotion, capacity building, market links, micro credit and grants for resource improvement. Suzlon protects the environment by effective environmental management, soil and water conservation, rainwater harvesting and promotion of eco-friendly livelihoods. Suzlon seeks to build social capital by strengthening community based organisations, promoting women's empowerment and collective action for self-development. The Group promotes access to better education opportunities, quality health care and positive behavioural change. By providing access to civic amenities and services, such as drinking water, roads and transport, electricity and healthcare, it meets the physical needs of its surrounding communities.
