Terminology
A Part is a combination of one or more walls, bends and features Parameters are the values of the general wall thickness, bend radii and type of relief used in the part The first wall is generated from a sketch (profile), as either a single wall or a group of extruded walls Features are things such as cut outs, patterns and stampings added to the part
General Process
From Assembly > create a new part (Top-down approach) or Create a new part > insert in assembly (Bottom-up approach)
10
In this lesson you will see how to start a Sheet Metal part by assigning the basic parameter needed to create the part.
11
Defining Parameters
Before starting to create any Sheet Metal part you will need to define certain Parameters of the part. These are common characteristics that when defined will make creation easier and thus limit your need to supply data during creation of the part.
Parameters Tab
12
It is important to note here that only one set of parameters can be assigned in a CATPart, therefore you are limited to one part per document.

13
In order to start there are three basic parameters that need to be assigned, Material Thickness, Bend Radius and Bend Relief Type.
Material Thickness Types of differnet Bend Reliefs
Square Relief
Round Relief
Linear

Bend Radius
Remember the Bend Radius you are assigning here is the standard Bend Radius to be used on the part. This will be used to create all Bend Radii unless you specify otherwise during the creation.
14
Make sure that the Parameters tab is active in the Sheet Metal Parameters window

20
The Profile wall is used when you need a wall of a specific shape. Often used as a first wall of a part
The Wall on edge is used anywhere you need a wall on an edge of another existing wall.
You can also select an edge, click on the wall icon and draw the sketch you want
The Extruded walls are used when you want to create a group of walls along a specific profile. Here again it can be used to start to build a simple U shaped chassis or a hat section used to strengthen other parts.

Bend Relief
A Bend Relief is the material cut out that is needed to allow the folding of the part without tearing the material or causing it deform
Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES 2001
34
In V5 the new methodology is to create groups of walls that have a common bend size. Then when you have a group you can create them all at one time and save the steps of having to confirm the direction each time.
In cases where you have non-standard bends then you will have to use the singular bend capability and define direction. Therefore it is important to make sure your standard bend is the most common bend size on your part.

The Cut Out icon is very similar to the Pocket icon in Part Design and has all of the depth capabilities such as Up to Next and Up to Last Sometimes you will find that after creating a wall that you decide that you need to add additional slots on the exterior of the wall or add notches or chamfers. This can be done with cut outs if you do not wish to go back and modify the wall sketch.

52
53
Tip: Using Up to Last allows for the cutout to go through both walls with one tree entry
Select OK Tip: For sheet metal parts use of Up To Next will make modification easier.
54
Creating Corners
Select the Corners icon You have two several ways to create Corners: either you select each edge or you select the Select All button

User Pattern
For the position, you have to select a sketch containing points where the new features will be instantiated. You have several Parameter configurations. On each case you have to fill two of the three parameters. The reference direction element can be selected directly on the geometry (edges).

58
You can also display the folded and the unfolded views in two different windows at the same time
On the unfolded view, all the bend limits and the foot print stamp are displayed
59
Note there are times that you will not see certain things in Flat Mode. For example if a wall does not have a bend assigned to it yet that wall will not be visible. Also some 3D Features, such as stiffeners, will not have any indications in that they exist in Flat mode. All the stamping feature are only visible on the face of the stamp.
60
61

Cut Outs or Walls created in 3D must be modified in 3D. Likewise cut outs made in Flat Mode must be modified in Flat Mode.
The part is unfolded and in reviewing the view you will note one of the areas has an overlap problem
A copy of the part is maintained in flat mode all during the creation of the part, thus making it quick to switch from one mode to the other.

Defining a 3D Feature
When designing a Sheet Metal part you will find that you sometimes use common 3D Features in your part such as an Extruded hole or a bridge. The CATIA Sheet Metal workbench comes with some of these 3D Features pre-defined for your use.
66
What is a 3D Feature ?
A 3D Feature is a common piece of Geometry used in creating sheet metal parts. It comes with parameters that can be modified to change its shape or size and sometimes requires a sketch to complete its creation
67
Shown below are the various types of Features available in the current level of CATIA.
Bridge Feature

Select the Point Stamp icon
Key in 80 degrees for the angle and 12 mm for the stamping diameter
You cannot select the direction arrow to reverse it. You must instead use MB3 over the sketch in the tree and then select the Change Sketch Support item and then the other side of the wall to reverse the direction.

Select the Extruded Hole icon
In the Extruded Hole Definition window key in 4 mm for the height and the radius value of 0.5 mm
Each feature has a Sketch attached to it where the locational data is contained. This can be used for modification later on.

Modifying Walls
As we design a Sheet Metal part we will find that we need to make modifications walls. No matter what the type of wall we will want to modify something about it, shape, length, width etc.
86
WALLS ON EDGE
Edge walls can also have there profile modified to add exterior geometry to them. You can also isolate the edge and shorten it.

Select the original wall sketch and the Sketch icon
The edge slot and chamfer could have been created as cut outs but that would have increased the size of the tree and the document size. Modifying the sketch is better.

89
Select the original Wall Sketch.3 for the Edge wall and the Sketcher icon
To Isolate the wall from the original edge locate the Mouse over the yellow edge line and use MB3 and select ISOLATE
Likewise here it is recommended that things such as notches, edge slots and chamfers etc be added to the sketch thus eliminating the need for extra items in the tree.
Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES 2001
90
Select the Sketch that the Extrudes walls were created from
Now if you wish to modify these walls by adding notches, edge slots, chamfers etc and maintain the capability displayed here then you must use cut outs to do the modification.
Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES 2001
91
2
Locate MB3 over the Extrusion 1 item in the tree select ISOLATE under EXTRUSION OBJECT
The Extrusion 1 is gone and all walls now have a sketch that can be used as any other wall sketch is used
Once you have done this you can never return to the Extrusion type wall here.
Now if you want to modify the length or width of the wall or add notches, edge slots or chamfers etc. you should do it in the sketches as we did with profile walls
Copyright DASSAULT SYSTEMES 2001
92
Modifying Bends
As you saw earlier you can modify all of the bend radii in a part with a simple modification of a parameter. However, if you only wish to modify one of the many bends on your part then you will need this lesson.
93
Once a Bend Radius has been unlocked from the formula that drives it, it always remains unlocked and thus will not change even if you change it back. The link must be restored using the Wizard before it will again be driven by the standard radius.
